XVII: Crystalized.

Shyael had just fallen to sleep trying to keep herself warm when she felt a terrible yank on her chained wrists. The mechanism clanked and rattled as it reeled in her chain, pulling her upward and off the ground. The gate above opened, and she emerged from the top, the second she caught sight of the Jote standing next to the structure Shyael threw her foot into her chest...knocking her off her feet as the mechanism stopped.

"Well, that was harsh." Jote said as she got to her feet and brushed the dirt from her red dress. She grabbed shy by her wrists and dragged her away from the hole. Being unlatched from the chains Shyaels feet touched the grass and gave out, sending her face first to the ground.

"Must you be so clumsy." Jote said dragging her to her feet "You weren't down there that long."

Voiceless and weak Shyael struggled as Jote dragged her around.

"JOTE!" Norma's voice could be heard across Valhalla's fortress. Jote groans and her wings extended until they were lifted off the ground.

Something must have happened, Shyael thought. Something must have given Jote away, she must have made a mistake that caused her to snap. She flew with haste and took Shyael to the Crystal Plane. Once she flew into its cathedral like structure, Jote quickly locked the doors and pushed a statue in front of it.

Shyael's mind began to panic once her fate became obviously clear. Jote dragged her once more, but this time Shyael fought knowing what was about to happen and knowing that Norma and the others sought for her.

"Stop fighting me!" Jote pulled Shyael to her feet and pushed her towards a round platform. Shyael grabbed at the small stone columns at its entrance and held her place. Refusing to let her body touch the glimmering crystal floor of the platform, her heartbeat loudly in her chest.

Jote sighed and approached "It's not so bad! I'm going to crystallize you. You should be thanking me. This way future warriors will be able to glance at your features in awe. They will tell great stories about you; you will be remembered as the warrior you are."

Shyael shook her head.

"What?" Jote blinked. "You don't want to be remembered?"

Shyael just gave her a glare. "Traitor...monster!" Was all she was able to say through her telepathy.

Jote felt her stomach twist in knots. Even though she had spellbound Shyaels vocals through her now stolen grace her power of the mind was still functional. Hearing such a voice through one's mind could make you nauseous, still Jote just tossed her head back and laughed. "You're too much Shy. I may be a traitor, but you will always be known as the Valkyrie who failed."

A smile brushed across Jote's lips as she pushed Shyael's hair from her eyes "You failed to please Odin, you failed to protect your sister while she was torn to pieces by mere wolves, something you should have been able to handle. And you failed to stop me."

Jote wasn't about to stop then, sure she was running out of time, but she wanted to make Shyael's mind a neverending spiral of regret.

"You even failed to save your worthless soldier who is going to his very death as we speak...which is a pity really. He is quite handsome."

Shyael's eyes widened. So much has happened to her in such a short time that she nearly forgotten about Steve Rogers, and the life she held in her hands. "You need not touch him!" she threatened Jote. "He is no longer important to your game."

"Oh, but you're wrong again Shy." Jote grinned. "While defending Hydra I discovered something...An Infinity stone. Why, who knows what could be done with such power? As for your soldier you see, he wants to stop Hydra and its beautiful vision, therefore he has to go."

Jote grabbed Shyael by her silk strap and ribbed her white dress from her body. As she did so she continued her rant.

"As we speak your handsome Captain is making his way over an ocean and will soon plunge into its icy waters and freeze to death." She nearly sang when she said it "That is if he doesn't drown first. Either way that vessel will be his grave. No one will ever find him."

Jote grabs Shyael by her throat and pulls her close until she was just inches away from her face. "It's a shame we have to do this now, I wanted you among the living a little longer. Pity."

Shyael responded by spitting in her face. Jote screamed, wiped out her eyes and she shoved her backwards. Shyael landed harshly on the cold crystal floor. Large stone slots rose from the ground around her and stared to spin. Sensing her body, the crystal below began to glow and react to her touch, turning into a liquid that crawled up her bare flesh. First slowly then faster and faster to the point Shyael felt like she was in the eye of a storm.

The freezing liquid crashed down on her body and morphed her like a clay. She could feel her body becoming numb piece by piece as she became part of its dangerously beautiful stone. Jote had taken her grace but left most of her power intact. She was nowhere near the magical waters of her fountain so she prayed that the crystal waters would show her mercy and allow her to vision the Soldier one last time.

To her own amazement her power went through, and she dream fasted one last time. She saw him speaking with Peggy Carter over a mic device from their world. Shyael tried to pay close attention to their conversation, but she couldn't hold concentration. The crystal was consuming her, and time was running out.

She had truly failed with following Odin and her sister. But for one last time, perhaps she could listen to her sister's advice and do something and think of someone other than herself. Shyael could use her power to slow the crystallization process, maybe even stop it from turning her into a crystal completely.

Instead, she charged the remaining of her power and pushed it into him. Just as the Captain crashed through the ice and the water rushed in, Shyael through her arms around his shoulders and shielded him. Her power covered him like a thick blanket, it wasn't much but she knew it would keep him warm and safe from the waters icy touch. Maybe it would keep him alive, maybe someone would find him she did not know.

At her last moments she closed her eyes as the crystal waters morphed over her face making her life blur. Shyael felt her vision of him fade as she lost connection, but her power remained around him. The captain closed his eyes as he too lost consciousness, Shyael felt spark of redemption as she lost sight of him and her whole world went dark.

Jote's original plan was ruined, she was going to keep Shyael alive and use her power of mind control for her own desires. But Norma meddled and caught her in her own fountain confession...Jote's last mistake. Even though she had failed, victory was still in her hands. There was a bigger price out there in that ocean.

A most precious and powerful gem called to her. It was then that Jote made her choice, the choice to go rogue and leave the realm. Odin wasn't foolish enough to send his guards chasing all over the realms when there were more important matters to attend to. She turned and looked at the crystal statue that remained what was left of Valkyrie Shyael.

She lay on her stomach within the cluster in a relaxed position with her left hand curled close to her heart. Her other arm rested above her head and disappeared into the crystal cluster at the elbow. Even though the Valkyrie was no long in a livable state, with enough power Shyael could be revived...if she remained complete.

Jote pulled out her dagger and approached the crystal. She traced her hands over crystal Shyael's back, picking her spot carefully. Stopping at the spine just between the shoulder blades she carved a diamond shape in the crystal before tapping each corner and cracking it along the lines. Jote skillfully and effortlessly broke out a section of Shyael, forever crippling her from returning to life.
