XVI. Thunderstorm
Thor burst into the throne room of his father, steaming with the news he just heard as he returned from scouting the realms. It didn't take Odin much thought to understand exactly why his son was furious.
"Explain this!" He demanded, "Did you really cast this unspeakable judgment on my bride to be and her sister.
"Don't you dare raise yourself to me," Odin shouted back. "I agreed they be punished but revoked the law into doing so."
"How dare you even consider--" Thor stopped suddenly. "What?"
Odin couldn't help but smile at Thor's bewilderment and confusion. "Someone convinced me. The last time I tried to keep too people apart I lost something precious. Love comes in all forms and has more power than any king could control. I regret my selfish actions and have decided both my sons shall love a valkyrie proudly."
"I do not understand."
"I have changed my mind." Odin repeated. "There will be no punishment."
"No, I understand that father." Thor interrupted. "But if what you say is true then where have you taken them."
"They are in the cells below the palace, in tack and treated generously. I meant to release them upon your return."
"After I caught news of what happened I ran straight to Shyael's holding cell and found her gone...along with her sister." Thor explained. "The guards claim her sentence have been carried out."
"On whose orders?" Odin demanded. "Who carried out the sentences? I had no say in such matters."
"The guards are saying Jote is the one who took them, claiming to have been by your orders."
It was rare that Thor witness even a glimpse of fear in his single blue eye, a glint he was seeing even now. "Find them, get those two girls back into this palace at once and drag whoever is accountable by their heads!"
Thor turned to leave but Odin stopped him once again, he picked up the pillar covered in a red sheet and presented to his son.
"Use this if you run into trouble."
"What is it?" he asked
"A gift from your wife to be...I was saving it for later but now is as good as any."
Thor pulled off the red silk to expose the Mjolnir, he looked at his father then slowly grasped its handle. Lifting the hammer for the very first time he could feel its power surging though him. With its size he expected it to be much heavier, but its gleam told him it could only be made Uru, a precious metal of enchantments. The power of lightning forged from a Valkyrie in the hands of a Thunder God...together they were made to be the perfect Storm. The hammer sparked to life in his tight grip, it spoke to him without the use of words. Odin knew what he was feeling and accepted that power when the smile grew on Thor's face.
"I will not rest until they are both brought back into Asgard."
Norma and Viera finally returned to Asgard with their victory from the lone realm. As they entered upon the throne room, they could sense something dense in the air. Kneeling before Odin they spoke of how their victory came to pass. Norma knew it was unkind to speak of personal affairs, but she couldn't help herself.
Thankfully this time she didn't have to. Once her mission was complete Odin spilled to her what had happened and put the two Valkyries on another mission. They were to assist Thor and bring back Shyael and Tira. Norma being Shyaels longest, closest friend was extremely disturbed by this news. She didn't want to tell Odin this, but something told her that Jote had something to do with this.
Thor came back home to consult with his father that they are no where to be found...next he would try the more dangerous of realms. This is where Norma and Viera would come in handy, but before they could take there leave another twist occurred in their already unstable life.
Upon entering Hel, the forgotten wasteland remained exactly that without a sheer sign of life. Until they spotted Jote along the horizon. She scrambled and fell breathless at Thors feet.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." Jote grieved. "I tried to stop them but I couldn't. They had me."
"What are you taking about?" Thor spoke sternly "Who had you?"
"Tira was made mortal, but before we could take her to a safe place the fiends of the this realm invaded us...they took her."
"How did this happen?" Norma asked "Under your watch! and Odin revoked his order, why did you continue to carry it out."
"Tira felt shame and wished me to carry out her half. Shyael and I went after her to change her mind." Jote wiped the tears from her face, "But it was too late, wolves had killed Tira...and Shyael...she couldn't bare the grief."
They all sat in silence as Jote continued to weep with her story. "She couldn't bare the death of her sister...she took her own life by plunging into the abyss."
"You lie." Norma Threatened, "Shy would never commit suicide."
"I tried to stop her but I couldn't...I wasn't quick enough."
"You will take me to there bodies." Thor demanded, pulling Jote to her feet. "I want to see them for myself."
"Of course, my lord."
She did exactly what she was told and took him and the two other Valkyries to the very sight where the attack happened. The others winced in disgust as they looked upon what remained of the terrain. It's objects and cages had been burnt they ashes were still warm. With weapons ready they examined the scene. A few of the large wolves lay dead along with some of the goblins.
Jote explained that she charged in and took out whatever she could, the rest ran for the woods. Norma came across an area covered in blood and few body remains. She quickly covered her mouth and held her breath in hopes that she wouldn't throw up. As a Valkyrie it was accustomed to looking upon the gore of the battlefield, but she never expected to gaze upon one of her one in such a state.
"Tira." Viera confirmed as she too looked away from the remains.
"This is barbaric!" Thor said as he too looked upon what remained of the fallen angel "Loki will be heartbroken."
"You mustn't tell him anything." Jote snapped.
They all suddenly turned and looked at her
"He- He will be crushed." Jote added "There's no telling what he might do. Can he handle such greive so soon?"
Thor hated it but eventually agreed with Jote. He stopped and re-scanned the field, but found no trace of his future bride anywhere. "Where is Shyael?"
"I don't know."
Aggravated Thor grabbed Jote by her collar and yanked her up on her toes. "You lie! You said you saw her take her own life."
"Yes." Jote admitted "I saw her throw herself from the abyss of the rainbow bridge. After that is was gone."
Displeased Thor shoved her away and walked the remaining of the scene. In the end they knew there conclusion, they burnt Tira's remains and headed back to Valhalla to confirm to Odin of this terrible event.
In Valhalla there was no day or night, time itself seem to freeze. But yet the Valkyries followed the sun with its rise and fall in order to harvest warriors from there grave. Shyael could feel the moons glow as she lay in her now found prison deep with the well.
Jote's torture lasted for days and her wings were taken from her first. Her backs burned with cuts and brusies and remained weightless without their spirit. Many times she had climbed to the top but the bars locked in place of the entrance stopped her, resulting into countless falls back towards its wet, rock bottom.
The last time she injured her shoulder with the landing and knew it was time to stop. Her body was tired and she knew Jote was too smart and manipulative to make her escape easy. All Shyael could do was think of her sister, images of her death flashed constantly in her mind, the echo of her dying scream pierced her ears.
Shyael had screamed in the valley to the point that her voice no longer works probably, not that it mattered anyway. Once Tira was dead, Jote dragged her back to Valhalla and cast the enchantment that Odin set for her and locked her voice from her. Her Telepathy and Mnemokinesis was all she had left. Her power worked in a strange way, she could manipulate and erase every memory of those who approached her, but not her own. Therefore, Tira's death would forever be on her weary mind...and Jote knew this.
Word of the death of the Valkyrie sisters rang throughout the realms. Valkyries gossiped until the days end, Some saw it coming, others couldn't believe such demise could fall on any of there kind. Norma on the other hand was getting sick of hearing her friend be talked about in such ways. She couldn't wrap her mind around it, sure Tira's death was certain and quite predictable.
But, Shyael would never kill herself...something didn't add up. Norma went to Odin for a plea, to investigate Jote. Everyone knew that she was jealous of Shyael, but would she go so far? Odin took Normas concerns seriously and granted her to search Jote's wing but must not fuel such a flame further if there was nothing to be found. Norma bowed to her king and returned to Valhalla. Swiftly she walked to Jote's hall, not minding those who passed her. She told no one of her plan, she wasn't even sure she had a plan.
Norma just needed that one shred of proof, the one thing that could put Jote away. Stopping at the stone doors leading to the fountain, she opened it just slightly, being careful not to make any noise. There she saw Jote speaking to the water as it glowed below her. Norma stood close watch and listened and was shocked at what she overheard.
Thor took in the sight of his brother as he lay passed out on the bed. Shyael's powers truly did a number on him, he was unclear to how long Loki would be out...but at least he was breathing. More importantly, how would he deal with his brother once he awakened...did it really matter? His memories of his love would be long gone.
Thor rubbed his brow as he thought of ways to explain to his brother of why he missed a year's worth of memories. Perhaps he could say he fell? Loki wasn't graceful after all. OR maybe he could say he was injured on a battlefield while going after him? No. Nothing seemed to fit right, nothing Loki would believe anyways and the truth was out of the question.
Maybe mother would tell him something, he always listened to her. Thor was about to take his leave when he saw a sliver ring lying on the table. It's tiny structure was not meant for any finger of Lokis....he knew it had to belong to Tira. Thor reached to grabbed the ring and a slight glow sparked from it.
"An enchantment?" A memory enchantment, it was brilliant! Loki would touch the ring and his memories would be restored, this was Shyael's back up plan. However, with both Valkyries now gone having his memories restored only to discover Tira was dead would just devastate him.
Quickly he headed to his father, being relieved to have left that room. Odin was not found in the Throne room but in his battle strategy hall. Thor nearly slid to a stop when he saw Norma standing face to face with the king. They both looked at him when he entered.
Odin nodded "I'm afraid I have on last mission for you concerning the Valkyries."
"What is it?"
Odin looked at Norma then back to Thor "You must go to Valhalla with Norma as you guide and arrest Jote for treason and murder of Shyael and Tira. Then you should go to Midgard at once!"
Thor couldn't believe his ears. "I don't understand."
Norma stepped in "Jote has been dealing with someone from Midgard known as the Red Skull, I have been informed that he has a galaxy stone...The Tesseract. She also admitted to putting Tira in harms way, which led to her death. Therefore we must assume she had something done to Shyael as well."
"Are you ready?" Odin said to his son.
Thor straightened and gripped on the handle of his newly beloved weapon. Motivation struck him at his highest.
"More than ready."
