I. Born for Combat

Battle cries echoed over the dark wasteland of Muspelheim. Lead by the mighty Thor Odinson, his army cornered the remaining enemies to the weight of the cliff's edge. Six stood before him. A fiery abyss like the infernos of hell over the horizon made the already large bodies of his enemies cast a shadow over the prince of Asgard.

The Molt-Orcs were giants compared to him but could be completely stupid. Blind with their own berserk rage, Thor knew he would have the winning chance.

With his broadsword in hand, he challenged the beasts. The Molt-Orcs accepted such taunting and charged. Before the prince could have his glory, a bright flash of light pierced his eyes. Striking between them like a falling star, the light faded to reveal the most beautiful figure in crystal armor.

"The Valkyries have come!" One of his warriors shouted from afar.

His army cheered with relief and praised the winged warriors, Thor scoffed. Although he admired the Valkyries a great deal, this was his fight. He dared not to go from a striving warrior in combat to a damsel in need of saving.

The one before him was quite petite compared to most Valkyries but stood the proudest, dominating the field around her. Thrusting her sword forward, the blade extended like a whip of shards that stretched beyond imagination.

It pierced through the monster's armor and into his body like a hook. Yanking back on her handle, the shards retracted, pulling its way back to their master with the beast attached. Once it got within feet of her, she jumped above him and came hurling down on top of him. Her blade went deep into his skull and out of his jaw, ending him.

More flashes of lightning struck over the battlefield and more Valkyries stormed the remaining Molt-Orcs. The winged warriors put their reputation to the test. Moving like angelic dancers they spilled the blood of their enemies and ended Thor's war.

Unlike Asgardian warriors, Valkyries were born for combat. Handpicked shield maidens by King Odin himself, a Valkyrie can handle any weapon given to her. Not to mention their own separate abilities only a goddess could possess. From mind control to telekinesis the powers were unlimited. There were some that could even cripple your entire body with a single touch.

"I had them Shyael!" Thor burst in anger. Scorned that the Valkyrie easily took his glory.

"It would seem to not be written that way." Her velvet voice was like a soft echo. No hint of tire or battle wore could be found. "That is most unfortunate."

With a flash of her wings, she vanished.

The dust had settled, his war was over.

Steamed over the outcome, Thor stomped into the throne room as if to start another fight. Still looking quite torn with his hair dirty and cape nearly burned, he would face his father battle worn.

It was only by chance that Shyael stood at the foot of Odin's Throne. Without giving her a second glance as he took a knee at his father's feet. Odin took one look at his son and felt concern.

"You look distressed my son, were the fiery fields of Muspelheim overwhelming?"

Thor glared at his current irritation standing next to him. Her helmet was off, but the majority of her face remained concealed by a mask as always. "I wouldn't exactly use that term."

"How about exasperated?" Shyael's lips smiled. "Perhaps that would be more fitting."

The look he gave her was enough to make the paint peel from the palace walls. Shyael was an expert at digging a burning sword under his skin.

"She!" He pointed like a blaming child. "Had no reason to interfere! I had everything under control."

"He was stalling my Lord," Shyael responded. Her voice was ever so gentle. "Acting like a spoiled child who plays with their food."

"You had no right!"

"She had every right!" Odin fired back, cutting their banter short.

The throne room went silent as his echo stretched down the hall. Walking down the steps of his throne he met both of them at the bottom. "You had been gone for many days; I sent the Valkyries to end whatever was distracting you from completing the task at hand."

Thor lowered his gaze as his father continued.

"I know you have a love for battle, but there is a time to fight and there is a time to reign. When there is no conflict a King does not go looking for trouble." Odin sighed deep. His single blue eye remained gentle. "Today's battle was a victory nonetheless, let us be rid of our arms and raise our glasses. I expect you both at tonight banquet. Dismissed."

Thor accepted but left the throne room still unsatisfied with the outcome. Shyael released her own exhale but remained at the foot of the throne. There was more on her mind.

"My apologies for speaking so freely towards the coming heir."

A smile spread across Odin's face. "No, my dear, you spoke what needed to be heard. There is a reason why you have become such a valiant that you are."

"Very well," Shyael pressed, "but a banquet seems too sincere."

"I want to thank you," Odin continued, "for taking care of my son, even when he is... difficult."

"It is my purpose, my Lord. To protect Asgard I must protect its crown."

"And you guard it well. Everyone at tonight's banquet will know this."

Shyael winced beneath her mask. It had been many moons since a Valkyries had made an appearance among the Asgardian fleet. They were higher beings and there were risks when exposed to any form of mortality. She felt the need to make concern known to her ruler.

"Are you sure that it is wise to have Valkyries among the men? Wouldn't we be misplaced?"

"Do not feel ashamed of who you are Shyael the Valor. A Valkyrie must stay separate from mortal affairs, but one does not need to hide in the shadows. This banquet is for you as well."

Despite her wavering thoughts, she sighed and accepted his offer and bowed.

"Now," Odin beamed, "stop worrying about what might go wrong and instead start worrying about what you should wear tonight."
