work from home ft. avril

"She never looked nice. She looked like art. And art wasn't supposed to look nice, it was supposed to make you feel something."
- Rainbow Rowell (Eleanor and Park)

"Ness, I think I've got blisters a- and I'm starving." I said feigning a pale, I'm-about-to-die-of-hunger look. I got in return a that-bull-ain't-working-on-me-so-shutup-and-keep-walking look.

It'd been a painful 1 hour and 22 mins of Van surveying every beachwear store in this monstrously huge mall, picking through the latest designs while I trudged along behind her mostly just carrying the bags. I bought a simple navy blue boy shorts swimsuit for myself from the 1st store we went to within 5 minutes max. Vanessa on the other hand was looking for that one life changing bikini that would get her boyfriend Blake on his knees armed with a wedding ring. She finally found one but decided that without matching flip-flops the mission can't be accomplished.

Like really? Which guy proposes a girl after inspecting said girl's footwear?

But now, I'd had enough. 3600+ seconds of walking, with Van constantly nagging me for a detailed opinion on all the outfits was like sitting through 3 consecutive lectures on physics. Dead boring. To top it off, I hadn't eaten anything since the pancakes. My mouth watered reflexly.

I threw the bags on the couch outside the waiting room where Van had taken with her the entire store to try.

As I sprinted towards the MacDonald's on ground floor, suddenly, the acoustics of the floor changed. Previously filled with the light chatter of people, it was now replaced by the crackling sound of a microphone in check.

"A pleasant morning dear shoppers,"
A confident female voice said.

I weaved my way to the centre, following the crowd. Set up close to the far side was a rectangular stage of healthy size. There was a karaoke set similar to Rhys' (Yeah, the nutcase bought one which he's been prohibited to use) on one end and a large, brightly decorated donation box to the front. It had the words 'For The Less Privileged, For A Good Cause' printed aesthetically across it with the logo of some Charity House.

The source of the voice was a really tall, black haired girl with a lip piercing.

"I'm Avril De Barros, and this-" she said, gesturing to a lean, familiar looking blonde - "is Taylor Chance."

"As you might have guessed, this is a charity program organized by Apollo Charity House, Florida, which aims to raise funds to provide proper shelter and education to the homeless and poor."

Chance continued, "We, the students of Silvana High will be hosting today's musical. So, ladies and gentlemen, let's begin with a solo performance by Avril right here."

Say what? They go to my school? At least the blonde looks familiar but I'd never seen Ms. I'm-going-to-beat-the-Burj Khalifa before.

The music came on, and I smiled, stopping not 5 feet away from the stage, instantly recognizing the song which Vanessa and I had practised on like crazy. You see, Van and me, we were the co-captains of the dance club in our school. We'd been dancing and choreographing in Silvana High since freshman year. I loved dancing just as much as I loved eating. Currently, we worked part-time as choreographers for Oliver Jane Dance Academy which organized gigs and took up dance classes. The academy was like a third home after Rhys'. Wait no, fourth, there's Vanessa's.. Oh, you get the drift.

Hence, what happened next shouldn't really surprise you. A rush of adrenaline ran through me, and before I could comprehend a single thought, I was on the stage, ready to dance on the magical beats of Work From Home by Fifth Harmony.

This is how, ladies and gentleman, began the most exhilarating dance of my life ; on instinct, and pure instinct alone.

A/N : I recommend you blast your cell phones/computers/laptops/tablets with Work From Home at volume MAX, to get the *shivers* feels.

I ain't worried 'bout nothin'

I'm wearing about nada
I'm sitting pretty, impatient
But I know you gotta
Put in them hours
I'mma make it harder
I'm sending pic after picture,
Imma get you fired

I began Camila's verse with my favorite dance form: hip-hop. My body flowed in sync with the music, resulting in nimble automation. This was one dance I had practised to perfection and beyond. The compounding crowd threw in some 'oohs'. Avril on my left, looked over, first in confusion, but went along it.

Normani's pre-chorus started and out of nowhere Vanessa leapt onto the stage, winked and joined in the dance.

I know your always on the night shift
But I can't stand these nights alone
And I don't need no explanation
Coz' baby your the boss at home

It went exactly the way we practised. The noise was increasing. And then, as the chorus began,
Ca-mi-lord Ca-mi-lord, (get it? Camila/my lord?), the mass of people went bonkers.

You don't gotta go to work
Work, work, work, work, work
But you gotta do the work
Work, work, work, work, work
You don't gotta go to work
Work, work, work, work, work

The darn beats were so intoxicating, my body felt like it was on fire. Gaze forward, chin tilted up, I danced my heart out. My dark orange top was swaying at the frilled ends and my loose black hair was blowing like the Peruvian breeze. The donation box was flaunting a long queue which made me smile. We did a full body wave and the crowd went crazy with hoots and claps. I let out a little laugh as a small girl jumped onto her father's shoulders, giggling and waving.

The final chorus shared by Camila, Dinah and Lauren came on and the audience actually started singing with Avril. In my entire life I had never seen such an enthusiastic response before. The noise was deafening and energy so overwhelming I couldn't help it. I started screaming the lyrics too.

"YOU DON'T GOTTA GO TO WORK
NO, OH"

Work, work, work

But you gotta put in work
Work, work, work, work,work

"Aa Aa Aa Aa Ooh Yeah"

Work, work, work, work,work
You don't gotta go to work
Work, work, work, work, work, work
Let my body do the work

Do Work, Do Work, Yeah

"Yeah We Can Work From Home"
(Oh-oh-oh)
"Yeah We Can Work From Home"
(Oh-oh-oh)
"Yeah We Can Work From Home"
(Oh-oh-oh)

Work From Home ended and the entire mall was filled with the sound of cheers and claps. Vanessa blew a kiss to the audience. A few guys in the audience pretended to catch it.

Grinning ear to ear, we left the stage when someone stopped us.

"Hey!" We turned to see Avril walking towards us. "I just wanted you guys to know how much we appreciate your help. I'm Avril De Barros."

"Kiara Hartville." I said smiling widely, still brimming with energy.

"Vanessa Cabral. And it was our pleasure." Van said with a smile.

"Your performance though was fabulous. It probably earned way more charity than what we expected. Maybe I could return the favor with some McDonald Specials? Please, it would be my treat."

As if on cue, my stomach roared. Before Vanessa could protest, I jumped in readily, "Holy Hills. Yes please, that'd be great. I'm so famished right now, I could easily gobble down the store. Including, the cute barista."

Avril laughed and Vanessa chided me for my apparently inappropriate behavior. I shrugged. Gone are the days when candor was an appreciable quality, I tell you.
