Chapter 3
Max decided to head to the lake to wash his clothes before going to his tent and waiting to be found in the morning. As he got closer his eyes widened. There was a certain redhead sitting on the pier crying. Max began slowly backing up, his eyes never leaving the man. Max stopped blood pounding when a loud crack filled the air. He looked down at his foot in annoyance and sure enough he had stepped on a twig and snapped it in half. Looking back up he saw the red head running towards him with his arms spread wide for a hug.
"Shit" Max thought to himself. He began looking for a way to escape and decided on running to the woods. The pain in his stomach was almost crippling. Max didn't make it far until he began violently retching on a tree. As he retched he felt a warmth on his back. "It's going to be okay Max" David whispered. "Maybe for you" Max screamed childishly on the edge of a temper tantrum. David's hug got tighter. "I won't let you suffer Max. I'm here to help you. I always will be" Max scrunched his face at the man's kind words. He didn't believe him, he learned long ago to trust no one. Eventually Max stopped puking and sat there motionless not daring say a word. A couple minutes had passed and then David asked the question Max was dreading. "Why did you run away"? Max refused to answer keeping his back facing the redhead. Suddenly he was picked up and forced to face the man. Max blushed and stared down at his feet knowing David could now see the spot where he had previously wet himself. First David's eyes widened in surprise then a soft gentle look overcame them. He hugged Max fiercely. "It's okay everyone has accidents" David told the child sympathetically. "...you don't understand" Max whispered. "Oh sure I do I used to when I was a kid" David replied. "Sure, when you were what five. I do it every night, every single fucking night I fall asleep into nightmare worlds and wake up in this one wett and fucked over" Max replied a lump in his throat growing with tears threatening to fall. "Oh, Max. I had no idea". A long silence passed. "You could stay in my cabin" David said quietly. Max was surprised, David wasn't going to yell at him or hit him, he was just going to help. "What" max replied. "I have a washer and dryer in my cabin and you don't have to worry about the other campers finding out if you stayed with me" David replied coolly. "They're gonna know. They're gonna know something's weird when a 10 year old needs to sleep in his counselors cabin." Max said the lump in his throat beginning to go away. "I could tell them it was your punishment for running away. I wanted to make sure you wouldn't do it again so I made you stay with me." David replied. Max thought a moment. "Okay". Max took David's hand and began walking back to his cabin.
