Chapter 18
David had left to grab supplies for s'mores and instructed the campers to make gifts for Gwen as a thank you for everything she's done. Max had been working on his present ferociously for the last 5 minutes, but when he looked up he noticed that space kid and Dolph who naturally loved anything to do with art were the only other ones making gifts. Max knew how much this was gonna mean to Gwen so he decided to do something. Max went up to each camper individually and talked one on one with them on what they were going to make, some were easier than others, but in the end, everyone was making something for Gwen and Max went back to his present.
By the time David got back, all the gifts were neatly wrapped to each camper's best ability. David hung a homemade banner that read "Campe Diem Gwen" and went to go fetch Gwen.
Gwen still looked tired and messy, but a lot better. Slowly she shuffled up to the place where they would have campfires. Her eyes lit up upon reading the banner and seeing each child holding out a homemade gift. For once being at Camp Campbell felt like the place where she actually belonged. The camp sat around the campfire eating s'more while David sang his songs which were unusually unannoying. Suddenly something was thrust into Gwen's hands. She looked up and saw Max staring sheepishly at the ground.
"Just open it and don't look too much into it," Max mumbled a blush becoming obvious on his cheeks. Gwen took off the elegant red bow and ripped the wrapping paper open to reveal a homemade photo frame with a pic of Gwen, David, and Max together at the pizza place when Max's old parents ditched out on Parent's Day. A tear came to her eye and she looked up ready to hug Max only to see that he had gone back to David to hide from his embarrassment.
Eventually, the fun came to an end and everyone headed down the hill to their tents. Gwen got up and began to head to her cabin when a pair of hands entwined with Gwen's and began to lead her down to the Dock wordlessly. She looked up and saw her usually bubbly co-worker serious and wordless for once. He only let go of her hand when they reached the dock and he turned around to met her eyes. David reached in his vest and pulled out a little-opened box containing a bracelet with a tree charm that was engraved with CBFL(counselours buddies for life) on the back and handed it to Gwen. Gwen immediately began to tear up once again.
"Now, I know it isn't much, but I just wanted to give you something to show how much I appreciate you. I honestly don't think I could do any of this without you and well, golly I was thinking last night how much Max and I are going to miss you when camp ends and was wondering if maybe you would want to move in with us." David began speaking faster "and well if you did decide to you could have your own room. We'd be sure to give you plenty of privacy. I already talked to Max about it and..."
"Yes," Gwen said hoarsely interrupting David. David stared at her. "Yes," Gwen said again louder this time.
"I don't want to be alone anymore David. I've been alone my whole life. I finally found some people I can trust and I would love to be able to stay after summer ends."
David's eyes lit up with obvious happiness.
