Chapter 17
It had been a week and no one had even seen Gwen. Everyone thought she just needed some time to herself, but a week was way longer than her usual cool off time and Max was starting to get worried. Sure Gwen had yelled at Max, but that didn't mean he hated her. Max sighed staring at Gwen's half of the counselour's cabins where for a week he hadn't even seen the lights flip on. Max had enough it was time for Gwen to come out. He asked for a bobby pin from Ered and used that to break open the door. He flipped on the light and was taken back by the total state of chaos the room was in. Bins of Ben and Jerry layed on the floor along with piles of dirty clothes. The room reeked of body odor. There was a colony of spiders in the corner of the room.
"Gwen what the fuck", Max exclaimed taking it all in. There was no response. He walked over to her bed and ripped the blanket off to expose Gwen curled up with her knees to her chest. Her hair was matted. Her whole body dirty. That was not healthy.
"Holy Fuck, Dude you need a shower!" Max pulled on Gwen's arm trying to get her out of bed, but she wouldn't budge.
"I can't do it" Gwen muttered quietly, "I'm just like them. All I do is hurt others. I thought if I protected myself and acted tough I wouldn't get hurt, but now I just hurt others just like them."
"Gwen that's nonsense. You need to get up. This is unhealthy" Max said his nervousness coating his voice. Gwen just closed her eyes and refused to move. Max tried to pull Gwen out of bed again, but he was too weak. He decided to go get David.
He ran to the main activity field and saw David watching the other campers doing their various camps. He grabbed David's hand and started pulling him back to Gwen's room. David just went with it knowing any kind of physical contact from Max was a way of improvement from his previous parent's abuse.
David's eyes went wide and his mouth fell open when he saw Gwen's room. David walked over to Gwen. Shakily he asked "Are... Are you okay?" Gwen didn't answer. Slowly he reached out and shook Gwen lightly. She opened her eyes and stared back at David still saying nothing. David kneeled down and stared Gwen in the eyes.
"Gwen, I know it's hard, I know you don't feel well, but I need you to get up, get dressed, and start living again. You can't just isolate yourself." David said softly. David could see a flicker in Gwen's eyes signaling that she was contemplating what David was saying.
"Why do I need to get up. It's just an endless cycle of pain. Either I'm hurting someone or someone is hurting me. Here in my room I'm away from people. I'm safe." Gwen says her eyes fixed ahead.
Max spoke up "I know what your thinking, but you're really just hurting yourself and others more by staying here. You lay there and let your thoughts consume you and the people who care about you feel abandoned. You need to get up Gwen. You're like our camp mom. We need you." Gwen thinks about his words a little bit.
"Okay" she replies "I'll take a shower and clean up, but I don't think I can face the camp today".
"That's great Gwen! We can do it in little steps. In no time we'll have you back to yourself" David says enthusiastically. Gwen leaves to go shower, David goes to plan an awesome activity to try to brighten up Gwen's mood tomorrow, and Max stays behind tidying up Gwen's room in hopes of making it more livable.
