Prologue
It wasn't a normal scream.
No. It was the kind that sliced through all the air, making all the fear inside of you slowly pool into your heart. It was the kind where your feet carried you to the source of the sound, while your brain was replaced with molasses and all the scenes before you trickled into one big blur.
The first thing I saw was the blood.
Rust-coloured and flowing freely, like red watercolours gradually intertwining with the clear water. The only sound was the echo of Adriana's scream, her hazel eyes widened in an expression of panic. I could hear my heartbeat in my chest and my head, pounding so hard I was afraid my ribs would break.
My mouth screamed for help of its own accord- my brain still processing what I'd witnessed. Maybe, it was all a dream, but the goosebumps on my arm felt all too real. More people trickled into the room and the screams of horror amplified. My legs had stopped moving now and my knees had suddenly collapsed. I was on the floor in my pajamas, unable to process it all.
The body. Submerged in the pool, the limbs held in place in the calm water. All I could see was a mass of raven black hair, slicked over the face. As they hoisted her out of the pool I got a clearer view. The blue tinted lips, the white-washed face, as if someone had just sucked all the life out of her. The only part of her face that seemed to suggest she could still be alive were her eyes. Black as an eagle's coat. They were open, pupils dilated and as the lifeless body passed me on a stretcher, I looked right into them. For the last time.
Rowena Del Rosario's eyes.
That bitch had it coming all along.
