10 | she's an old friend of mine

ten
she's an old friend of mine.

JOSIE WASN'T PURPOSEFULLY dodging Veronica's calls last night. She'd just been really busy after running into Toni. One second, Josie was standing at the concessions stands and the next, Josie was backed against a fence and she was making out with Toni Topaz. Afterwards, she spent the night at Toni's. Then this morning, she had to do the walk of shame and sneak into her house.

And to her surprise, she doesn't feel guilty about it. Veronica had never made things official between the pair, so as far as Josie's concerned, she can see whoever she wants.

And now, she's in the school hallway at her locker. She pulls her chemistry textbook out of it when Veronica rushes over to her, a worried expression on her face. "Josie, where the hell have you been? I tried calling you like ten times last night. You said you were gonna go get snacks, and you just disappeared. We were worried when you never came back-"

"I ran into an old friend of mine," Josie shrugs, emphasizing the word 'friend'. Veronica's eyes widen in realization as she says this. "What? It's not like you and me are dating, Ronnie. Say you wanna be exclusive, and I'll go there with you. But until then, you and me can see different people while we're figuring this out."

Veronica falls silent as Josie slams her locker shut. She winks at the Lodge girl before sauntering off to the football fields to meet up with Betty, Kevin, and Jughead. She, however, gets there the same time as Veronica. As soon as they get there, the duo figure out that Betty is going on a date with a guy on the football team named Trev. And she seems really happy about it.

"You're positively radiating Nicholas Sparks," Veronica grins at Betty mischievously. "Tell me everything about this Trev."

"Oh, there's nothing to tell," Kevin insists, quoting exactly what Betty had told him. "Just one of Betty's sources, there's nothing romantic in the offing."

"That's disappointing," Josie frowns at her friend, sitting down on the bleachers as everybody else does. "You deserve to have a great boyfriend, Betts."

"Why is everything weird here?" Veronica remarks, glancing at Josie, who purposefully ignores making eye contact with her. "Why can't a date just be a date?" She then glances at Archie, who walks over and sits next to them. "What about you, Archie? How's life in a PG world? PG. Post-Grundy?" He narrows his eyes at her, but she shrugs innocently. "What, too soon?"

"Coach Clayton says I have a shot at being varsity captain," Archie informs, but he doesn't seem very happy about it. In fact, he almost seems mad. "So I'm not thinking about anything else right now."

"And you're back to being boring."

"You're deflecting," Josie tells the redhead. He scrunches his nose in confusion, so she explains. Apparently, last night when Josie was at the drive-in, Archie and Ms.Grundy were busted by Betty's mom. She wasn't arrested, but Alice and Fred forced her to resign. "Betty told me about what happened last night. So forgive me if I think you're trying to keep yourself busy, so you can avoid having to talk or think about how you feel about everything."

"I'm not avoiding anything," Archie counters, but based on the amount of annoyance in his voice, he is. "I'm just trying to get my life back together."

"I can help with that," Valerie intervenes, walking over and sitting down by Archie. She's part of Riverdale's best band, Josie and the Pussycats. The lead singer is Josie McCoy, not Josie Scratch. "I know Ms.Grundy was tutoring you."

"Understatement of the year."

As soon as she says it, Josie swats Veronica's arm playfully. Veronica bites down on her tongue to keep from laughing as Josie gets a text from Toni. She zones out on the conversation, opening the text.

From Toni
Had fun last night. Wanna
come over later?

From Josie
Sure

She sends the text quickly before she pockets her phone. But by the time she does this, Valerie pushes herself to her feet and walks away. But as she leaves, Cheryl saunters over, missing her usual pep in her step. "Sorry to interrupt Sad Breakfast Club, but I'm here to formally invite you to Jason's memorial at Thornhill this weekend."

She hands Josie, Archie, Betty, and Veronica fancy black envelopes. She, however, scowls at Veronica, making her distaste perfectly clear. "To my surprise and chagrin, mother added you to the guest-list. In case you're tempted to steal our silver candlesticks, don't. We'll be searching bags."

"Wow, Cheryl's being more of a bitch than usual," Josie breathes, surprised by Cheryl's actions.

Betty turns to them, forcing a smile. "Hey, try to remember, she is burying her brother."
