21 | no more tears

I'm putting this tiny authors note first in this chapter because I want to apologise for the extreme amount of "cringe" you are about to read. This is just so horrible!

Anne found herself sitting in the grassy area behind the Homestead the next morning with her long hair loose from it usual ponytail. It had already been pretty long when she came up to the Maze and now reached all the way to her back. She had thought about cutting it, but backed away everytime she came close to doing it.

She pulled away at the grass by her crossed legs absentmindedly. Her mind was going through all the information it had gotten the previous night. All the memories that now flooded her mind kept her very busy as she sorted through them. At times, it felt as though she had never lost them. Other times, they felt new and foriegn making her think harder and harder about every single detail in there.

White was the most common in her dreams and in a way, she felt like she could describe her memories with the word aesthetic. She had a feeling that her memories reached back all the way to when she was around seven years old. Any younger, she couldn't remember, but that was normal. The rooms that she saw in her dreams were all white which was the reason why they remained her of the word. The walls, floors, ceiling, furniture, everything was white. Even the clothes that she wore most of the time were white. There were doctors, scientists and all sorts of people walking around the place and there were lots of tests. So many.

But what she remembered the most and what tugged at her mind was the boy, Aris. The one who helped her make the plan to come into the maze in the first place so that "more varies could be thrown at them." They had never planned for her to stay inside forever. They never planned to keep her until what they called "the end" came. They always needed to remove her from the maze at some point.

This was the reason why Gally's mad screams that she was going to die now made sense to her. No. She wasn't going to jump of the random cliff to her death. His warning or rather a message as she understood now, was to remind her of where the exit was. It was to ready her for when she would finally leave the maze.

And now the time had come.

Her hands had stilled from pulling at the pretty much non-existent grass beside her now. Instead, they trembled slightly as she anticipated what she was about to do now. She had to leave and she had to leave soon. The path out of the maze was clear in her mind now. She knew exactly which way she had to go. She just needed to find a way to slip past the boys and get out. But she knew that wouldn't be easy. The boys weren't just going to let he rout of their sight. Especially after what had happened to her the previous day.

As though he had heard what she was thinking, Newt appeared in front of her, a smile on his face.

"Is this where you've been hiding this whole time?"

"I'm not hiding," Anne said. "You just couldn't find me."

"Hence the reason why I said you're hiding."

Anne rolled her eyes as he sat down beside her. He looked over at her more than once and she tried to ignore it. Se shifted uncomfortably when she felt his gaze lingering on her for just a little too long. She knew what he was going to ask and she wished he wouldn't.

"Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," she replied immediately, "do not ask me that again or I will punch you in the face."

"Yes, sir," he said with a mock salute, a bright smile lighting up his face.

She wanted to smile back at him. She wanted to laugh with him and be carefree or as carefree as you could be when you were trapped inside a maze but she couldn't do any of it. She knew that any kind of relationship they had or could have was short lived because when she left, he would think she was dead and they wouldn't see each other again. So instead of smiling at him, she just hung her head low, the depressing thoughts overwhelming her and making her eyes fill up with tears.

"Anne, what's wrong?" Newt asked after a second when she didn't respond in any way.

Anne just shook her head, sniffling as the tears finally fell. Newt reached out and slowly lifted her chin up with a finger. Anne tried to pull away and wipe the tears falling down her cheeks, feeling extremely pathetic in that moment. Newt responded to her attempts by taking her face in his hands, causing Anne to stop.

Almost unconsciously, Anne found herself leaning into his touch. Newt gently wiped away her tears with his thumbs.

"Anne, what's wrong?" He asked.

"I don't know," she relied softly.

He didn't ask anymore questions and just pulled her to his chest, letting her rest there until she finally ran out of tears to cry.

Did you guys die trying to read this because I died a little inside while writing this. Please teach me how to write romance because I'm very inexperienced in that field. I'm so sorry. And I'm laughing now. What one earth is wrong with me?
