15 | trust me

The voice in her head pulled her out of her dream filled sleep early that morning. She didn't get startled this time. Instead, she sat up in bed and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes before turning unconsciously towards the window where a beetle blade was sitting, it's bright red eyes staring right at her.

Someone was watching her.

You can't tell Newt about me.

This time Anne actually used her brain instead of completely freaking out. It was a male voice and it probably belonged to a boy around her age, though she couldn't be too sure. It almost sounded like the boy was being as quiet as possible as though someone might hear him whispering in her head. It was either that or he was trying not to scare her like he did the previous night.

Trust me. You shouldn't tell anyone. It'll ruin everything.

Anne turned her eyes back towards the beetle blade sitting on her window ledge. If she wasn't going crazy, then the boy talking to her was watching her through the camera on the small me hanical creature. She remembered Newt telling her about them being spies for the people who sent them to the maze.

"Who are you?" Anne asked as softly as possible. She didn't want someone catching her talking to a beetle blade.

I'm sorry. But I can't tell you that.

"Then what can you tell me?" Anne asked. "And why can't I tell anyone about you?"

You can't tell anyone because they'll think you're crazy. I think you know that. As for your other question... Trust your instincts. When it's time to run, run.

Anne frowned, confused. What was that supposed to mean? When it's time to run, run? That made no sense. Why would she need to run?

It'll make sense later. Just trust me and trust your gut. You'll know when the time comes.

And like a wire had snapped in her brain, the boys presence was gone, just like that. It was like he was there one second and completely disappeared the next, leaving her feeling extremely empty and lonely.

"Hey, you're up early."

Anne whirled around to find Newt standing by her door. She hadn't even heard him come in. "You need to stop doing that."

"Doing what?" Newt asked.

"Walking in randomly," Anne said, grabbing a towel and some clothes. "It's freaking me out."

Newt mumbled a quick sorry as he stepped out of the way to let her walk out of the room. But he did stare after her, wondering why she was being a bit odd. Something was clearly bothering her. He could see that very clearly.

Once Anne was done in the bathroom, she had breakfast and quickly headed to work, keeping herself busy so that she wouldn't have to think about the thousands of things that were bouncing around in her head. But it wasn't that easy to keep the thoughts at bay. Especially since she couldn't share them with anyone. Anne didn't know why she was trusting some random voice in her head that was telling her things that made absolutely no sense. What she did know was that she for some reason did because that voice, that person, his presence, it all felt just a tiny bit familiar and that freaked her out even more.

Gally's screams from the next room had become a constant thing that they had all somehow managed to get used to over the hours of work. Anne noticed that she wasn't th eonly one who kept themselves busy. Everyone worked non stop. If they weren't patching someone up, they were cleaning something or rearranging or looking for something. Even Lincoln didn't sit down for a second.

Clint left a few minutes after lunch to attend a Gathering that was being held in order to discuss what to do with Gally once he woke up. Anne wondered for a second why they waited until midday to hold the Gathering until Lincoln pointed out that Minho was a keeper and that they ahd to wait for him in order to make a decision. And the earliest time at which a Runner would return from the Maze was after lunch.

Anne was also pretty curious about what they would do to Gally as well. Even though he ahd gotten hurt, he still had broken a rule and that meant he'd get punished for it. Lincoln told her that he would probably get a few days in the Slammer and that it was unlikely that he would get banished. When Anne asked what he meant by getting banished, Lincoln just shook his head and told her he didn't want to completely freak her out and left, leaving her very confused.

Since Clint was absent at the moment, Jeff who was tending to another Glader asked Lincoln and Anne to give Gally some water. Even though he was unconscious, they still needed to keep him fed.

The two approached Gally's room much like the way someone would approach a lion. Neither of them wanted to go in, but they had to. It was their job. With a sigh, Anne was the one who pushed the door open to reveal a sickly looking Gally lying on the bed. He looked even worse than he did the previous day. The poor boys skin was white with a hint of green and dark veins ran down his neck, arms and chest. The sight made Anne want to walk right back out of the room.

Seeing Anne go pale, Lincoln took initiative and walked further into the room, grabbing the water bottle on the table beside the bed and a metal spoon. He poured some water into the spoon and held it to Gally's lips to drink.

"Here," Lincoln said once he was done, holding the bottle towards Anne who still stood frozen by the door.

Anne walked over tohima nd took the empty bottle, tightening the cap and took a step towards the dustbin. But before she could go any further, a pale hand shot up and grabbed her around the wrist, causing her to shriek and let go of the bottle.

Anne turned to see that Gally's eyes were now wide open, an insane look in them. He didn't look like Gally anymore. He looked more like a mentally unstable person you would find at an asylum.

"They're gonna kill you!" Gally shouted , his voice hoarse from the screaming he had been doing in his sleep. "They'll kill you, Anne. They'll kill you!"

By then Lincoln had moved forward, trying to push Gally away from Anne. Gally's grip only tightened and his finger nails dug into Anne's skin causing her to gasp in pain.

Jeff burst into the room a second later, immediately going to help Linolcn once he saw what was happening. "Gally, let go! You're hurting her!"

Gally's attention shifted to Jeff, his eyes now looking desperate. Tears welled up in them as he started screaming again. "They'll kill her, Jeff. They'll make her jump. They'll make her jump off the cliff and they'll kill her! They'll ki-"

Gally's voice cut off and his eyes rolled back in there sockets as he fell back onto he bed. His grip on Anne's wrist loosened and Anne quickly stumbled back.

Linolcn was standing by the bed with an empty syringe in his hand. He must have injected Gally with a sedative or something. Anne didn't really care what he did though. She was just happy it was over.

Jeff pushed his hair away from his face. "Well, that was... Unexpected."

"Tell me about it," Lincoln muttered, dis arsing the syringe before turning to Anne. His eyes stopped on her wrist. "You're bleeding."

Sure enough the nail marks on her wrist were bleeding, though not that much. She walked out of the room, not wanting to be there for even a second longer. She heard Lincoln follow her as she made it downstairs and to the bathroom where she held her wrist under the faucet to wash the blood away. It stung, but that wasn't what she was thinking about at the moment.

"Hey," Lincoln said after a second of silence. "You okay?"

"Yeah," Anne nodded. "I'm fine."

But that was a lie.

Anne waited for Lincoln to leave before turning the water off and rubbing her fingers over the wounds on her wrist absentmindedly. She couldn't get what Gally had said out of her mind.

They'll kill her. They'll make her jump of the Cliff.

Things were getting more and more complicated and terrifying everyday.

I purposefully ended the chapter there because if I went into a whole new explanation, I don't know where on earth I'll be going. But, this was an exciting chapter (I hope) because it had a lot of stuff happening in it. The boy telling Anne not to tell anyone about him. Telling her to run when she has to. Gally telling her "they'll" kill her and all that other stuff! What's going on!

Questions (lots this time.)

Was this chapter interesting?

Why did the boy tell her not to tell Newt or anyone else about him?

Now that you know he's a boy, who do your think he is? Don't worry, who he is should be revealed soon. If you guys are able to correctly guess, you'll get a chapter dedicated to you!

Why does Anne feel like she knows or trusts the boy?

What one earth is Gally going on about?

Do you want Anne to tell Newt or not?

Thanks for reading!
