02 | job juggle
[EDITED 4. 2. 2019]
Becoming a Slicer was crossed off only mere minutes after she entered the Bloodhouse the next day. She hated the place. She hated the coppery smell of blood and how utterly unsanitary the whole place was. Winston, the Keeper of the Slicer's was nice enough, but she knew she would never be able to carry out the tasks the job required her to. Watching them kill animals was a bit too much for her to bare.
The next day was spent in the Gardens working with the Keeper, Zart. She watched as Zart and a group of three boys pulled out weeds. They fell on their backs, laughed as they pulled themselves up, only to fall right back down. It was fun. They pulled her over to them and she tied her hair up, getting ready to pull at the weeds with them. She laughed along with them as she also fell backwards, caking the back of her shirt with mud. Zart invited her to eat lunch with them that day and she thoroughly enjoyed it. It was better than the previous day when she couldn't bring herself to eat the food Frypan made after watching Winston cut the head clean off a chicken.
Working as a builder was absolutely hopeless, much like her day trying out as a Slicer. She was no good at it and she knew that the moment she was given her first task. While Gally and the others managed to drive a nail into the wood with one or two whacks from a hammer, she took at least eight and was afraid of hitting her hand the whole time. Gally reassured her that she did a lot better than some of the other Greenie's who tried out and cheered her up during lunch by telling her a story about one of the worst kids to try out.
"First he hit poor Jack on the arm with the hammer and then almost hit me on the face with it," Gally had told her. "So we gave him a bunch of screws and a screwdriver and long story short, had to take Will over there to the Medjacks."
She had laughed, mainly due to the overly exaggerated horrified expressions on his and the other builders faces. It was absolutely hilarious.
***She met Newt the day she worked with the Med-jacks. A blond boy was lying on one of the beds, ignoring everyone else around him. The bottom half of his body was covered with a sheet that Clint pulled away to reveal a heavily bandaged leg.
The boys face paled and a look of pain crossed over his face when he sat up with Clint's help. He stood with a groan, leaning heavily on his right leg as Clint put an arm around his shoulders, helping him stand. Another boy, Alby hurried into the room, helping Clint as well.
"You doin' okay, Newt?" Alby asked.
Newt nodded but gulped, his face growing more and more pale every second. His eyes moistened like he was about to cry.
"You don't have to do this today," Clint said.
Those words seemed to light up something inside Newt and he shook his head immediately. "No. No, I can do this."
Clint slowly and carefully released the boy and Alby held on, helping Newt out of the room and down the stairs. Anne couldn't bare to watch and turned around, instead focusing on Clint.
"What happened to him?"
Clint looked over at her with a sad look on his face. "He... Got hurt. In the Maze."
He didn't elaborate and Anne didn't prod further. She had a feeling she didn't really want to know. ***
Jeff poked his head into the room at that moment. "Hey, can I borrow Anne?"
Clint shrugged as he picked up the cast saw from the table. "I don't see why not."
Anne stepped out of the room, happy to have something to keep her mind off of Newt. She followed Jeff into the other room to find a boy lying half unconscious on the bed. His hand, despite the fact that a strip of cloth was tied around it, was still dripping with blood.
"Happens to Slicer's every now and then," Jeff said as he walked over to the sink and held a piece of cloth under the faucet. "We need to stop the bleeding and clean it up before we can stitch it. Do you think you could talk to him? He seems a little scared."
She nodded and sat down next to the boy who blinked up at her. She felt bad for him. He looked completely out of it. "What's your name?"
The boy blinked again before answering. "Danny."
"Well, Danny," she said softly, remembering Winston mentioning the name on the day she worked with the Slicer's. "Don't worry. You're going to be just fine."
With her help, the two of them managed to clean up all the blood, discarding the blood soaked cloth into the dustbin as quickly as they could. Once they were done with the cleaning process, Jeff handed her a needle and thread. It was a medical needle, shaped like a 'c.' She took it hesitantly.
"Are you sure I should do this?" She asked.
Jeff shrugged. "I'm right here if you need help and besides, every Medjack needs to know how to stitch up wounds."
Anne nodded and sucked in a deep breath before starting her work. She was surprised at how easy and oddly familiar she found the task. She was done pretty quickly too. She looked up to see Jeff staring at her wide eyed.
"I'm telling Clint he has to fight for you at the Gathering," he said as he handed her a role of bandage for Dylan's hand. She laughed as she watched him run off, calling Clint's name.

I don't know how Jeff was written in the book, but I love writing a slightly funny Jeff. Also, I didn't want to write her experience at each job too long so I made it short and (hopefully) sweet. Also, Anne met Newt and I know it wasn't much. I wanted her to help Clint with Newt but decided against it in the last second. But don't worry, you'll be seeing a LOT of Newt in the next chapter!
Also, update schedule! This book will be updated twice a week if I can keep more chapter pre written which is the case now. Updates will be on Saturday and Tuesday.
Thanks for reading!
Edit: I changed the part with Newt! I read fever code again and realised a made a terrible mistake. There's a *** in the changed part.
