so.

getting political is not something i enjoy doing on wattpad. to me, wattpad is a place to escape to when i'm fed up with the real world and with my other various social medias. but today, unfortunately, in this world we live in here in 2020, i am just so annoyed that i needed to rant, even if it's to nobody.

i don't even personally think this is a political rant at all, but some people might think that, so hence the title of this chapter.

now, can someone please tell me why in the year 2020 we are still such a hateful society?

i live in a very backwards-thinking town and it disgusts me every day to see how people act and speak, even in my own family. why is it in 2020 that we are still so racist, homophobic, sexist, xenophobic, ableist, classist, etc? to sum it all up, why are we still so full of hatred for those that are "different" from us?

being away at college really gave me the chance to feel free and to be able to express my opinions in person without receiving backlash from my family or my classmates (like in high school) but college was abruptly taken away from me because of the covid-19 pandemic and now i have to wait until august to return to campus (that's not to say it shouldn't have happened — my school and state acted responsibly). once again i'm trapped with these hateful people and it makes me sick to my stomach. i saw a very upsetting post (not targeted at me, but a racist post from the likes of the idiots i graduated high school with) this morning before work (my summer job — i'm considered an essential employee) and as i drove to work this morning, my stomach was literally churning and i felt like bawling my eyes out because i was so frustrated.

it was surrounding covid-19 and look — i understand that the coronavirus originated in china, but this does NOT give any person the right to spread hatred and act cruel towards asians or those of asian descent. it's absolutely disgusting!

then the other day, i saw a fancast post in which someone casted real life actors as different disney princesses. cute, right? i love disney! well, wrong.

they literally casted all white actresses.

for characters that are not white.

mulan, pocahontas, jasmine, tiana, moana ... all of them casted by white actresses, along with the likes of cinderella and belle and aurora.

i just —

i'm sure this person didn't mean any harm outright, but it's this ignorance and tunnel vision that stems from a much larger sense of societal racism.

i just ... i don't know what to think anymore. part of me knows that i can stop this hatred in small parts by not passing on some of the ignorance my older extended family members have displayed in the past, and that my generation will do a good job of stopping the stuff that has been passed down from our parents and grandparents, but then i see the kinds of stuff kids my age post on their various social medias.

i'm not playing a victim here, i'm 100% white and i 100% acknowledge my white privilege. it's just disgusting that no matter how far it seems society has come, there's still an endless battle ahead.

also, don't even get me started on the people that aren't trusting the scientists and doctors right now. that's a whole different rodeo.

(ps — i almost spelled "rodeo" as "rhodeyo". i think i have too much marvel on the brain.)

anyways, i'm posting this here because i know if i posted it anywhere else i'd get called a snowflake or something like that.

if being a snowflake means treating everyone with the same respect and dignity and consideration and fairness that i would want to be treated with, then sure, i'm a snowflake. ❄️

i just feel that if we were all put here on this planet together, then we all deserve to have the same respect and compassion shown onto us.
