Chapter 7
Annabeth
Waiting.
One hour.
Two hours.
Until finally, a half an hour later, the boy showed up. When he came to her table and sat across from her, he looked confused.
"Is something wrong?" Annabeth asked, putting her book down, raising an eyebrow.
"Um..no." The boy said uncomfortably.
"By the way, I never got your name." She said, smiling.
"Oh, it's Perc...um, I mean Peter." Peter quickly corrected himself, clearing his throat.
"Um, okay, Peter." She looked down, staring at her book.
There was an awkward silence going for two minutes. She looked up and caught Peter staring at her hair.
He blushed and looked away. She smiled and tried to think of something to say.
"So, how's life in Crete?" She asked, wanting to know more about him.
"It's really busy. Meetings with my father's business have gone all day long." Peter groaned.
"I know how it feels to be busy." Annabeth frowned.
"What do you do for a living?" Peter asked her.
"Well, I didn't get a job yet. I've been at home..Taking care of things I guess. What about you?" Annabeth said, thinking of how much labor she was forced to work for.
"You know, helping my father and stuff. Pretty boring I guess. Do you have any siblings?" Peter asked.
"Well, I have two step brothers. That's pretty much it." Annabeth sighed.
"I have a little brother and a little sister. They're quite fun to play around with. Though my little brother is always causing trouble in the kitchen. Always stealing my cookies." Peter grumbled.
Annabeth laughed, but then a snort came out. She stopped laughing and placed a hand on her mouth.
"I am so so sorr-"
"Hey, don't apologize. It was cute." Peter smiled before realizing what he said.
Annabeth's cheeks went red, as did Peter's.
"Anyway, I have to bring you some of my mom's blue cookies. Their delicious, I promise you." Peter smiled, returning to a conversation.
Annabeth smiled. Some blue cookies would really help her right now. She was starving, from the lack of food. She wondered how she was still alive, since she barely had enough to eat. She wished she could move to a better family than hers.
"Hello? Annabeth?" Peter waved his hand in front of her face.
"Hm?" Annabeth looked up.
"I was talking and you completely zoned out."
"Sorry. I'm just-" She stopped as her stomach let out a loud grumble.
Annabeth face palmed from embarrassment. It was the second time she embarrassed herself in front of Peter.
Peter frowned. "Annabeth, have you been eating?"
Annabeth thought she was being called fat. But she thought about his question again, then sighed.
"Well, not really." Annabeth said honestly, rubbing her arms.
"When was the last time you had an actual meal?" Peter asked again, raising an eyebrow.
Annabeth thought for a moment. She couldn't let him know about Helen and her life at home. She wasn't allowed to eat for two days.
But Helen wasn't here...
"In a long time." Annabeth sighed, looking down.
"Come on." Peter got up, and held out his hand.
Annabeth looked confused but reluctantly took his hand. They walked towards the front of the library. Annabeth quickly glanced at Mrs. Williams, and found her winking at Annabeth.
Annabeth glared as Peter lead her out of the library.
"Where are we going?" Annabeth asked, furrowing her eyebrows.
"Somewhere special." Peter smiled and continued walking down the streets of Crete.
When they started walking towards Jack's Pizzeria, Annabeth abruptly stopped.
Peter looked back, his hand still holding onto hers.
"Peter, I can't. I don't have any money, and I really shouldn't-" Annabeth started, but got cut off by Peter.
"I'm buying. No excuses." Peter dragged her into the store, and the smell of delicious stringy cheese pizza filled the air.
Annabeth sighed as Peter lead them to a booth.
"Peter, I'm serious. You can't-"
"Nope. I'm buying you pizza. So go ahead and start ordering." Peter smiled.
Annabeth shyly took a menu, looking at the delicious different types of pizza. She never got to choose what to eat and she hasn't eaten pizza in a long, long time.
She looked at the olive pizza, and knew it as the one.
Once Peter ordered, their drinks came to the table. Annabeth wanted to get water, but Peter insisted she got Sprite.
They were now talking and laughing, Peter doing weird tricks with his Sprite.
Annabeth enjoyed her time until the pizza finally arrived. Drool seeped out of the corner of her mouth as she stared at the pizza.
Peter smirked. "Dig in, Annie."
"Don't call me Annie." Annabeth rolled her eyes.
She took a piece, and took a bite. She moaned into the bite, enjoying it's taste.
"Don't have much pizza very often, do you?" Peter asked, frowning.
"Nope." Annabeth continued to scarf down the pizza, enjoying every last taste.
Peter played with his pizza, arranging the olives into a weird order where it looked like faces.
"Hey, look at this one." Peter turned his plate around, showing Annabeth.
Annabeth was drinking her Sprite as she looked down at the plate. She quickly began laughing, and laughing turned into choking. She kept coughing on the Sprite, before the soda began to trickle down her nose.
Peter looked alarmed as he got up and went next to her to pat her back. He handed her napkins as Annabeth cleaned herself up.
Peter sat back down, and Annabeth stopped choking. Peter looked concerned and got even more confused as Annabeth began laughing again.
She was laughing hard, her hands slapping onto the table. Peter started lightly chuckling, before full out laughing.
"Di-did yo-you see y-your face?" Annabeth laughed hard, breathing heavily.
"A-and th-the soda g-going d-down yo-your nose!" Peter laughed hard with her, both losing breath.
As their laughter subsided, they breathed heavily, Annabeth clutching her sides.
"Thank you, Peter." Annabeth smiled at him.
"For what?" He asked.
"For making me laugh. I never really laughed that hard before." Annabeth shook her head, chuckling.
"No problem." Peter smiled.
As the check came in, Peter quickly payed.
The exited the Pizzeria, each holding a chocolate chip cookie Peter bought before they left..
As they walked back to the library, Annabeth let her head slightly lay on Peter's shoulder. He tensed up a bit, before relaxing.
When they reached the entrance of the library, they faced each other.
Annabeth tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, smiling at Peter.
"I had a lot of fun today." Peter smirked.
"I did too. Thanks for everything, Peter. For the pizza, for the cookie, and for the jokes." Annabeth rolled her eyes playfully.
"Anytime, Annie." Peter smirked.
"Don't call me Annie." Annabeth glared.
Peter backed up a bit. Annabeth smirked.
"Well, I'll see you around, Peter. Thanks again." Annabeth smiled.
"No problem. Bye." He waved as Annabeth turned around, walking away.
Peter stood there, watching as Annabeth left. But she stopped in her tracks. She turned around and ran up to Peter. She hugged him tightly. Peter blushed and hugged back.
"Bye, Peter." She smiled, then walked back into the crowd.
As she began walking back home, she wondered if Helen would notice if she was gone.
She broke into a sprint, until she finally reached her house.
She went up to the ladder, and began ascending up to her window. She jumped and held onto the window sill, then pushed herself up.
She climbed into the window, and landed onto the cold ground of the attic.
She sighed and got back up. She sat onto her bed, and stared at the wall.
She thought about Peter. He was keeping her alive. He was making her happy.
Oh no, she thought. I have a crush on Peter...
