Chapter 12

Annabeth

Everything hurt. She couldn't move. She couldn't open her eyes. All she felt was pain. She just laid there, nobody noticing where she was.

She desperately wanted someone to save her. She mostly vouched for Luke, but a small part of her heart called for Peter.

Annabeth thought Helen had gone too far, now just letting her rot in the backyard. Suddenly, she heard a door slam open. She kept her eyes closed, not wanting to face anyone. She was too busy with the pain.

"Get up. The boys are getting suspicious and they can't know what I did to you. Go to your room." She smelt Helen's bad breath burn her hairs in her nostrils as the older woman crept closer.

"C-can't. P-pain." Annabeth kept her eyes closed, and let a tear fall.

"I don't care, you deserved it. Now get up before it turns worse." Helen snarled.

How could a woman have that much hatred towards a child? Annabeth didn't understand why her father loved this woman, a horrid creature that holds a grudge against her.

"One." Helen started.

Annabeth slowly opened her eyes. It appeared to be very dark, meaning it was probably midnight.

This woman had no soul. Annabeth didn't even make a move - since she wasn't able to - but also to tick Helen off. Annabeth deserved no such treatment like this. But then, suddenly, Annabeth started crying. She cried for multiple reasons.

She cried because she had such a terrible family. Her rude and heartless step mother who didn't acknowledge she was a human being. She cried for her father, who had been gone for so long, the abuses and treatment Helen was giving her was unknown to her father. She cried for Luke and Peter, for them to come back and save her. And lastly, she cried because of the pain.

She didn't hear anything else from Helen, she only heard her cries. Suddenly, Annabeth felt something warm cover her up. She squinted one eye open, watching as Helen draped a blanket over her. She couldn't read Helen's expression.

Why did she oh so suddenly get kind enough to give her a blanket. Yes, she was freezing. Yes, she was in pain. But that sudden act of kindness made Annabeth stop crying.

Annabeth closed her eyes once more as she heard Helen curse under her breath. She heard fading steps and the slam of a door.

Helen went back inside, only leaving Annabeth outside with a blanket.

Annabeth curled in the blanket, the warmth still not enough. But she thanked the Gods for keeping her alive for tonight. Annabeth sighed as she fell back asleep.

- Next Morning.... -

Annabeth woke up to feeling something crawl on her leg. Her eyes bulged out of her sockets as her Arachnophobia acted up. She was terrified to even lift the blanket off her legs and kill the spider. So instead, she screamed.

Her voice was hoarse, and her throat hurt, but she kept screaming.

She kicked her legs weakly, the pain numbing her. She finally mustered the courage and pain to pull the blanket off. She was soon met with eight eyes of an eight legged spider.

She let out another hoarse scream, this time alerting pedestrians from afar. The people on the road three minutes away heard the scream, immediatly looking around. Although Annabeth's house was covered with trees, the house could be spotted.

Annabeth screamed until she couldn't her throat quenching for water as she kicked weakly. Suddenly, yells of pedestrians were heard and they were getting closer.

"Hello? Is anyone there?"

Annabeth screamed again, hopes for someone to save her. She heard the knocking on the door of her household with questioning pedestrians. But then she heard Helen's voice.

"I'm sorry, do you need something?" Helen asked sweetly, which made Annabeth cringe.

"Sorry to bother ma'dam but we heard screams. Is everything alright?" She heard a soft feminine voice ask.

"Oh everything's fine. There's nothing here." Helen replied sweetly.

Annabeth screamed again, out of fear and out of hope for people to find her.

"There it goes again! Ma'am we have to check if someone is hurt!" Another angry voice said.

"You have no right to step on my property!" Helen yelled, then slammed the door.

Annabeth closed her eyes and braced herself as she heard the back door slam open.

"You better shut your trap or this will be the last time you see the sky!" Helen yelled.

Helen kicked at Annabeth, which made her whimper.

"We're calling the police!" A new voice said out.

Annabeth kept wincing each time Helen kicked Annabeth in the back. Annabeth opened her eyes and looked at the bright blue sky. She thought it would be her last time, as black dots danced in her eyes.

She then suddenly felt a tug on her foot, and soon she was sliding on the grass. Annabeth looked up and saw Helen dragging her to the forest, away from the open back yard.

"S-stop." Annabeth whimpered as the pain increased.

"Shut your mouth. If they find you, if you tell a single thing about what I did to you, I will kill you." Helen threatened as she kept dragging Annabeth through the woods.

Soon, yells and trotting was heard behind them. Helen let go of her foot, then smirked at Annabeth. Helen than ran away, looking frightened.

Annabeth was on the ground, probably left their to die.

After five minutes, Helen came back crying with a police officer on a horse.

"I found her here, officer! I didn't even know there was someone here! Oh please officer, help her!" Helen cried as she pointed at Annabeth.

"Oh my gods. Thank you ma'am." The officer quickly got off his horse and picked up Annabeth.

"Ma'am! Ma'am! Stay awake, I'm sending you to a hospital! Max, follow me." The officer ran with the horse behind him.

Annabeth let silent tears fall as black dots got bigger.

"I can't." She whispered before darkness overcome her.
