27. November, New York City, USA – Mary
I loved my new life in New York even more than I expected. The atmosphere was perfect, the people a dream. Everything was as I imagined it would be. My host mother Carol insisted on making the surrounding area unsafe today, so that I could find my way around on my own. I was immediately enthusiastic about the idea, because I was more than just curious about the city. So we all packed up again, because winter had actually arrived. There was no snow, but it was icy outside. There was not much going on on the streets this morning. A few shops were open and invited people to retreat into the warmth. However, Carol led us knitted past all the small shops, until we stood in front of a huge shop window.
The lettering on it revealed that the café was called "Cup'n cozy". I smiled instantly as I saw the cosy atmosphere through the window. I had to restrain myself from squeaking loudly because I knew this had to be my new place of work. "Jack is waiting for us.", Carol smiled and we opened the store door, into the little paradise. A small bell rang and announced us before the door fell back into the lock. From the inside you had a whole new feeling. Everything was immersed in a calm light emanating from the lamps above each of the individual tables. These were carved out of wood and screamed almost Christmas. On each of the tables was a small arrangement with fir branches and cones, in the middle of which was a candle that had to burn all day. The counter was also made of wood and took up a large part of the room. Behind it, a door led into the rear area, which was probably inaccessible to visitors. Behind the counter stood a bearded, medieval man and smiled kindly at us as we entered the store.
"Carol, children, how beautiful to see you." That must have been Jack. He stepped out from behind the counter and rubbed his apron once before gently hugging Carol. "And you must be the notorious Marriah.", he noted and looked at me. 'Mary. He smiled. "Well, Mary. I'm very happy to have you here. I'm sure we'll be a good team." All I could do was nod and smile. Over my shoulder, I gave Lenny a slightly desperate look that just smiled. "Oh, don't be so shy. You'll settle in quickly, I'm sure. Do you want to come with me, and I'll show you everything?" I looked at Carol, who smiled encouragingly at me. 'Sure.I said to Jack and followed him behind the counter.
Lenny
Mary disappeared with Jack behind the counter into the kitchen while Mom, Sina and I sat down at our regular table. "What do you think of her?" Mom asked me and took off her gloves. "Mary is very nice. She's a good match for you.", I observed as objectively as possible and leaned back on the bench. "I just love them. She's super funny and curious. Besides, she doesn't treat me like a little child.", Sina clarified. "But you're still a little child.", I replied with a grin, for which I got an annoyed look. "I'll be ten years old next year.", she improved me miserably. I just pulled one eyebrow up. "Tadaratta!" it came from the side and I turned my gaze away from my sister to Mary, who was standing next to us wearing her new clothes. She wore the same apron as Jack and had her hair tied up so that they could not disturb her. It looked great on her. Jack felt the same way. "My new employee looks fantastic, doesn't she?" he asked, almost looking proud. Jack was very personal and I was surprised how quickly Mary got along with him. It took me a few weeks. But he was right. She looked amazing.
