Lots of Fire and Melting Ice: Chap 12
Sebastian's POV
"He's dead..." I said in disbelief. Mia touched my shoulder but I shook it off, "He needs to buried. Properly... Get the wolfsbane." Mia nodded disappearing into the next room. "Tyler, Quinn, go get some shovels." They nodded leaving the pack house silently. Jake stared at the body in front of me with tears down his face.
"There has to be a way to save him." Jake said panicked.
"Don't you get it! He's dead!" I screamed. I started breathing heavily needing to shift. My fangs extended along with my claws, scratching them deeply into the table. I growled making the pack step back. "I'm the alpha now." I growled.
"Who said you get to be alpha?" Someone asked.
"Does anyone want to challenge me for the position?" I asked. No one spoke as they stared at me, "Good. Now we will give him a proper werewolf burial. Then we will go from there." Mia returned carrying rope and a bushel of wolfsbane.
"Jake, watch the body." I tilted my head towards the door signalling Mia to follow me. "Got the shovels?" I asked as we approached the boys. They nodded holding them up.
"Where are we going to bury him?" Tyler asked staring at me.
"Somewhere sacred, but not so people could stumble upon it." Mia said making me nod.
"By the old burnt down barn, I mean he bit almost all of us there." My mind went back to when I was bitten but that night always shifted my thoughts to the night Trina died.
"Okay let's bury him there. It's not far from here."
~
I wiped my brow to clear the sweat dripping into my eyes. Quinn and Tyler were breathing heavily by my side with giant sweat stains down their backs. "I think it's deep enough." Mia commented holding the flashlight over us.
With a grunt each of us pulled ourselves out of the newly made hole. We were silent as we stared at the fading full moon, one month of no stupid changing. At least, that's what I told myself. Walking back to the pack house in silence Mia grabbed ahold of my hand and squeezed it gently. This was hard for all of us. We weren't the first products of his creations, but we still had a strong connection to the one that turned us.
The others, that he had turned or had join him usually didn't stay around. Meaning they joined other packs, mostly to get information. I didn't see them around much but the news of his death could not travel. We would be seen as vulnerable and we would fall. And there was one pack who wanted us down on our knees the most; the Winter Mountain Pack.
I growled at the thought making Mia squeeze my hand once more. If the others of our pack found out about his death they would most likely come here to claim the title of alpha, and I couldn't allow that. I needed to get ready, get stronger so I could hold my position and protect my pack.
I hadn't even realized I entered the pack house until Mia's hand slipped out of mine. I focused on his body laying on the table... Dead echoed through my mind. Mia gave me a sad look and walked over with the rest of us. Jake and the other backed off watching us carefully.
Tyler grabbed the old white sheet and laid it across the table after Quinn and I lifted him from the table surface. Once he was placed on the sheet Mia carefully wrapped it around his entire body tightly, tying it securely with the rope from earlier. Next was the wolfsbane.
Wolfsbane was like poison to our kind, I'm sure I mentioned before. But there were only a few types that could seriously harm us. With enough of this stuff we would die from its toxins but with this little amount it would only make us uncomfortable for the walk back to the burnt down barn. Wolfsbane is sacred to our kind even though it can harm us. Using it in burials is a symbol a loss but also a symbol a strength.
Mia gave me a small nod saying she was done, the look in her eyes was sad like she had lost purpose. I walked around the table and pulled her into my arms. "Everything is going to be okay." I whispered into her ear making her grab the back of my shirt tightly.
Once I pulled away Tyler, Quinn and I grabbed the body lifting him to our shoulders. It was going to be a long trek there, especially with how slow Tyler walked. Mia whispered to the group saying they could come with us for this part. I'm assuming they all followed after hearing multiple footsteps behind me.
Making it back to our makeshift hole, the groups gathered around at close distance to watch us lower his body into the cold dark earth. Picking up a shovel the three of us began to throw dirt over his corpse. "Wait!" We all froze looking up to see who said it. A small framed girl made her way to the front and shyly looked down on the ground. "Shouldn't we say some words of respect?"
I looked between Tyler and Quinn suggestively. "What do you have to say then?" I asked making her even more nervous.
"Well um I didn't know him that long-" I chuckled throwing more dirt into the pit.
"Exactly, most of you are new here. Only known him a few weeks right?" I looked around the crowd leaning against my shovel.
"The thing is I've known him for over a year and you know what? Part of me is glad he's dead." I heard a few gasps and whispers amongst the wolves. "Mia, Tyler and Quinn can justify this. The alpha didn't care about us, we were just pawns that were playing a part in his stupid game. He was a selfish son of a bitch that wanted nothing more than to be on top and rule the world." I paused taking my shovel into my hands. "However he was still the man who gave us the gift, the life of a werewolf and for that I am grateful. Because without him my life wouldn't be the same." And maybe Trina would still be alive. I wasn't grateful for the life of a werewolf because it brought so many complications. But I had to lie to comfort them.
After the dirt was placed over his body I looked up into the darkening sky. I watched a shooting star bolt across the sky before looking down towards the crowd. Make a wish, I told myself. "Together we are wolves! And together we make a pack!" They cheered sounding more like wolves than humans. I welcomed the shift falling onto all fours before howling. I tilted my chin up letting the howl release from within me. The rest of them shifted following suit.
"We should run together, in his honour." Jake suggested through the pack link. A few grunts in agreement sounded through the crowd but all eyes were on me, waiting for an answer. "
What do you say alpha?" I stood a little taller when given the title. They believed in me, that I would protect them and lead them. I howled again before launching my legs in front of me.
We ran into the night as a whole, as a pack.
~
Most of the wolves had decided to head home to their expecting parents. The only thing I could think of was how my parents never questioned me coming home so late. I mean the whole time they hoped that I was going to shift regularly once I became old enough. However they never told me their secret, kind of like Amelia's family... I felt a pang in my chest remembering the previous night.
There was no way I was getting past the pack to go visit her and school seemed so far away. I sighed pulling my pants back on. I couldn't stop thinking about her. And it was driving me insane.
"Hey I better get going." Said Quinn panting beside me while he pulled his own shirt over his head. The smell of gasoline still surrounded him even after swimming in the lake.
"Yeah go ahead." I said making him smile he began to bounce towards the woods before a snap stopped him. We both froze starring into the darkness. Mia came up behind me along with Tyler and Jake who had yet to go home. A scent caught me nose and I recognized it immediately, "You might as well come out! We can smell you!" I yelled hearing my voice echo into the night.
Steven Winters came out of the woods in his human form holding his hands up. "Sebastian I need to speak with you. It's important." The urgency in his voice told me it was serious. My thoughts went directly to Amelia.
"Where is she? Is she okay?" I blurted out getting a look from Mia.
"She's-she's run off." He said looking at me pleadingly. I growled taking only a few strides to reach him.
"What happened?" I demanded my voice full of authority.
"We believe she overheard the conversation between her mother and Mrs. Forestelle." He paused, his eyes never leaving mine, "They were talking about getting rid of her memories temporarily." I growled again but he didn't flinch.
"Couldn't you pick up her scent?" I asked but he shook his head.
"The whole area where her trail disappears smells like gasoline." I shot around to face Quinn.
"Is that why you smell like gasoline?" I asked him suddenly suspicious.
"On the run here I crossed the area that smelled like it. I'm not surprised I smell like it... It was everywhere." I decided to let him go as I turned back towards Steven.
"Why do you need my help?" I asked. He was silent looking over my shoulder.
"Because she trusts you." He finally answered, "Call her, convince her to come home. I'll-I'll even let you see her again if that will help." I tried to hide the emotions from my face but I was overjoyed at his words.
I dug into my pocket and fished out my phone dialling her cell. After a few rings there wasn't an answer. My eyebrows furrowed staring at the screen. "She didn't answer." Steven held his clenched fist to his mouth with his eyes closed in frustration.
"I need to find her." His voice cracked with desperation. He seemed even more pathetic in this moment, knowing he no longer had the powers of a werewolf.
"I- We will find her." I told him. Even if I had to look all night.
Amelia's POV
I had tossed and turned after the unexpected visit from the actual Moon Goddess herself. I sighed in frustration laying on the bed with my arm draped over my eyes. The door to the apartment opened with a click making me glance at the clock, three am. Ew.
I hopped off the bed placing my bare feet onto the wooden floor. Quinn jumped when he turned around. "I thought you'd be asleep." He seemed to study my face before he picked up the fact that something was wrong, "Hey," He came closer and placed my face in his hands. I reached up and lightly wrapped my hands around his wrists. "What's wrong? Did something happen while I was gone?"
Could I really tell him the truth? That the Moon Goddess gave me a huge talk about what was happening to me? That it scared the shit out of me? I gave him a small smile. "I just couldn't sleep. What happened tonight? You were gone for a long time." His face contorted like he wasn't ready to drop the subject but another expression crossed his face, grief. He let his hands drop as he turned away from me.
"The alpha is dead."
I was shocked at first unable to move. Dead? I walked over to stand in front of him after I willed my feet to move. It was my turn to hold his face in my hands.
"I'm sorry." I said in a quiet voice but he let out a strangled laugh.
"Don't be. It's not like the guy gave two shits about us. Bash is the new alpha." My eyebrows furrowed again with confusion.
"But I thought the title had to be given, handed down or- taken." Did Bash kill the alpha? I mean I was grateful that he was off my back now but, Sebastian killed someone.
Quinn seemed to recognize my face chuckling again. "Bash didn't kill him. He stepped up for the title and no one fought him for it. Which means he's the leader. But I'm sure Andrew will fight him."
"Who's Andrew?" I asked sitting down with him on the couch.
"The alpha didn't just change us, he's bitten a huge amount of people but most of them went off to join other packs, to gather information for the alpha. Andrew was one of the first group of people he bit. Andrew will want to claim the alpha title once he hears about the alphas death." I grimaced. He was going to fight Bash and most likely to the death. I shivered at the thought.
"When will the others find out?" Quinn shrugged leaning his head against the back of the couch.
"News travels fast. Once other packs find out about his death we're going to become a huge target. Our pack was kind of, the Germany rising to power before World War Two. There is no way the others won't want to take us down." He turned his head towards me making eye contact, "You'll be safe. I promise." I didn't know what to say but the Goddess words came back at my face.
"Your family is looking for you. But the gasoline covered your scent beautifully." I moved closer to him and laid my head on his shoulder. He stiffened but I was comforted to be so close to him. I felt the same safeness I did when I was close to Bash.
"I won't be able to go to school tomorrow." I commented feeling him relax beneath me.
"Probably not. I would be wary about going out into public too. I mean considering he's probably told other packs about your absence." He paused and chuckled, "Once they find out I kidnapped you... I'm gonna be a deadman. Your dad is going to skin me and wear me as a coat." I laughed at that.
"I won't let anything happen to you. I promise." I said repeating his similar words.
Somewhere between our silence I had fallen asleep against Quinn. We now laid horizontally on the couch. His arms were wrapped around my back keeping me close to his warm body. The sun peaked through the window lighting the apartment slightly. I turned back to Quinn and stared at his sleeping face. I had to admit he was good looking, not as good looking as Bash by any means but he was cute. I smiled, he looked like a little kid when he slept. Not some big badass werewolf.
My mind wandered to what life would be like if werewolves didn't exist, if I wasn't one of them. I sighed making his eyes shoot open. He stiffened beneath me staring at me in shock. He sat up quickly scanning the apartment for danger. He looked back at me and became aware of our position. I was in his lap held closely to him by his tight arms.
A blush spread across his cheeks the same time it spread across mine. Neither of us moved as we stared at each other. I was afraid to breathe as the sunlight reached his dark hazelnut hair. Something filled his eyes as they flickered towards my lips. My heart was racing inside my chest as he leaned in closer.
My eyes fluttered close as our lips brushed together lightly. Impatient, I closed the rest of the distance pressing my lips to his getting a groan of approval from him. My body reacted to him in ways it hasn't to any boy I've ever been with. With one quick movement I was laid on my back and Quinn hovered overtop of me, our lips never parting for a second.
I only dreamed about being with Bash like this, being so close to him. Wait Bash? I froze making Quinn pull away suddenly. "I'm sorry." He said quickly getting off of me. I was confused for a second as a hand ran through his hair, "I shouldn't of pushed you like that..." A small laugh escaped my lips making him stare at me like I had grown another head.
"Quinn, relax." I stood from the couch closing the distance between us. I placed my hands on his chest staring into his eyes that were sightly golden from his inner animal. His arms placed themselves on my hips before I spoke. "I liked it." I told him. I wasn't lying to him, I did enjoy the kiss. It was just the fact that I wanted it to be Sebastian.
He was quiet as he searched my face for any hint of a lie. After a few moments he leaned down and pressed his lips back onto mine. This one was quick and sweet before he leaned his forehead against mine.
"I have to get going if I want to make it to school in time." He spoke softly, his eyes never leaving mine.
I nodded pulling away slightly. "I'll be here." I muttered.
"Be careful. I'll be back by three." I watched him grab his bag and his keys before he exited the apartment. I was alone yet again. I wrapped my arms around myself feeling suddenly cold without his body heat.
~
My boredom was in the high nineties by the time noon rolled around. I was SO bored. There was nothing to do in the entire apartment. The TV was broken, there wasn't a single book in this entire thing and I had already read every magazine. I laid on the bed staring at the ceiling remembering Quinn's warning not to leave the apartment.
Screw that. I jumped up from the comfortable mattress and changed into some more practical clothes. I grabbed my bag pulling out my over the shoulder purse holding my wallet. I had no idea what I would find in this town but I was curious.
Pulling on my running shoes I exited the apartment grabbing the spare key Quinn had pointed out the other day. I breathed in deeply once I was outside. It felt good not to be cooped up all day. I sure many would agree. I began down the sidewalk eyeing all the buildings.
I walked for a while before finding the centre of the town. I walked down the farmers market getting a few looks from people. Eyeing some apples the nice older looking lady behind the table spoke up.
"You must be new around here." She said with kindness.
I nodded. "I'm visiting a... Friend here." I told her handing her some cash for four apples. She graciously accepted bagging the apples for me.
"It's quite a nice town. Not too much trouble. You're very pretty. My grandson can't keep his eyes off you." I turned my head to see where she was looking. His scent hit me first. He wasn't human. Werewolf. His eyes flickered with recognition after I figured it out. He gave his head a quick nod before going back to his work. I wondered what pack he belonged to... Mine? Dirty Paw? Another? Was he going to tell his pack leader, Who would eventually tell my father? My heart sped up at the thought.
"It was nice meeting you." I said quickly before walking away as fast as my feet could walk.
"Hey wait up!" The stranger grabbed my arm to stop me, "Wait." He said out of breath. "I know you know what I am." He said quietly.
"I know you haven't shifted yet. My name is Adrian, Adrian Winters. You must be Amelia. I'm your second cousin." I was shocked but I started noticing the family features. Sea green eyes, light brown hair, high cheek bones. "We've never met." He shook his head. "No we met a long time ago. But you're going to see a lot more of me because of the on call. The whole pack is getting together."
I was relieved to see Adrian here didn't know about me running away yet for him to report me. "On call?" I asked.
He nodded, "We're getting together to prepare for the next upcoming battle. This one is going to be bloody."
"A battle between who?" I asked my hands shaking by my sides.
"Against the pack that took our territory obviously, the bitten pack." And that's what I was afraid of.... Sebastian.
"It's nice to meet you Adrian, I'll probably see you around but I have to go." He nodded not suspecting anything. It was sad to think I barely knew any of my werewolf family members. I shoved my hands into my pockets shielding them from the cool air. The sun was out but it was doing jack squat. Stupid cold.
Once I'm a werewolf though the cold won't bother me. I smiled at the thought. "Now what is a girl like you skipping school to come to a town like Bridgedale?" I jumped at the sudden stranger pulling up beside me. My whole body began screaming that there was something wrong with this person. Something that wasn't natural. However I played it cool, I was still curious about how he knew me.
"Do I know you?" I asked keeping my apples in my clutched hand, ready to use them as a weapon.
"Well no. But I know you. My name is Peter Sherran. I'm in your Math and English class." I tried to recall seeing him in school but I didn't remember seeing him, like at all.
"I'm guessing you like to skip?" He chuckled nodding his head.
"I find school unimportant sometimes. I guess I'm different in more ways than not." His orange-brown eyes flickered to me and I inhaled deeply. His scent wasn't that a a human but it wasn't the usual musky scent of a werewolf.
My eyebrows furrowed. Maybe he was human. "Well Peter, do mind me asking why you are talking to me? I mean considering we've never spoken before." I rubbed his hand in his chin.
"Well I was just curious about why the granddaughter of the most respected nurse in RavenHills is skipping school, alone I might add."
"It's a long story." I said subsiding my internal instincts to run away.
"Well if you're not going back to school then I say we have lots of time." Peter didn't appear to want to harm me but I really needed to get back to the apartment. Mostly just to relax, my nerves were all over the place.
"I'm sorry Peter. It's really nice to meet you but I have to get back to the apartment, someone is expecting me." He grabbed my arm holding it so tight it would leave a bruise. I gasped trying to get out of his iron grip, "Ow." I managed to get out.
"Your little wolf friend left a while ago. You aren't protected here." My eyes widened in horror. He knew about us but his scent was different. His hand tightened even more even though I thought it wasn't possible. "Yes Amelia, I know what you are and what your family is. You would be surprised about how many of us surround you. We're always watching. And I've been sent here to collect."
I now really regretted running from Adrian... Quinn was right, I should have stayed at the apartment.
Sebastian's POV
My body was exhausted but I managed to get up and go to school with only an hour of sleep. "Dude you look awful." Tyler pointed out leaning against the lockers. I opened my locker throwing my back pack into it. I slammed it shut wincing from the sound, "Were you awake all night?" I nodded walking beside him down the hall. Tyler scoffed.
"What that's look for?" Mia asked approaching us from the opposite direction we came from.
"Mr. Dreamy over here searched for Amelia all night long." Mia's face scrunched up before turning around and walking with us. I couldn't explain it to them. How I felt that is. I felt like there was a part missing from me with her absence. And because that part was gone the anxiety and depression crawled across my skin mocking me.
"I don't need to explain myself to you." I snapped. They were both silent for several moments before I frowned, "I'm sorry I'm being such a douche."
I rubbed my face a few times before Tyler spoke, "Are you alright? I mean it's pretty obvious that you have a strong attraction to this girl. It must suck to be away from her." I nodded again sticking my hands in my pockets.
"It sucks. And I have to be here to make my parents happy. I can't miss anymore school." If I wasn't here I would be looking for her. I took a deep breath before the bell rung above us. I internally groaned. There was no way I would be able to focus.
Then I smelled it. Strawberries and roses. The most intoxicating scent to me. And it belong to her. I scanned the hallway of dispersing people searching for her sweet face with her intense sea green eyes. I started down the hall literally pushing people out of my way. "Hey!" One girl yelled in annoyance but I ignored her profanities yelled in my direction.
Ally grabbed my arm growling to catch my attention. "Bash what's wrong? You look like you're freaking out." I turned around shooting her a glare. She immediately let go gasping softly, "Your eyes." I turned away from her stomping down the almost empty hallway.
I was frantic trying to find the source of her scent. Hopefully it would be here. The hallway was soon empty and Quinn was left grabbing his books from his locker. It was him, he smells like her. I growled catching his attention in the silent hallway. My breaths were heavy as my nostrils flared. It made sense now. The gasoline, her scent being covered up.
I launched myself at him catching him by surprise as I slammed him against the lockers. "Bash?" He coughed out sliding to the floor. He groaned in pain pushing himself up a bit. I grabbed him by the collar and slammed him against the lockers again holding him so his feet dangled off the ground.
"Dude? What are you doing?" I slammed him again silencing him. The metal doors beneath him creaked as they bent inward. I went close to his face and inhaled. Her scent on him was faint but my body had been so focused on her it that my senses had picked it up.
His face flickered with understanding. "Where is she?" I demanded. We silently stared at each other. "WHERE IS SHE?" I asked again slamming him again denting the lockers even more, "TELL ME!"
"Hey Hey! What's going on here?" Coach asked placing his hand on my arm. "Boys enough! Break it up!" I found enough self control to let him drop. Quinn held his chest coughing lightly. Coach stared at the lockers in complete and utter shock. "Did you do this?!" Oh crap. I stayed silent leaning against the opposite wall. I glared at Quinn as he glared back, "Boys what's going on? You both have a lot of explaining to do, and you better get it straight before you go to the principles office."
He then looked at me and pointed a finger at my chest. "And after, you and I are going to talk." Coach walked us both to the principles office explaining that he broke the fight before any real harm could occur. He also sold me out on damaging the lockers.
"Sebastian Peters, football star, dropping grades and barely showing up to class." He began reading my record, "Mr. Peters can you explain to me why you decided to attack Mr. Manhattan?" I sighed through my nose before I spoke.
"It's over a girl." I said suddenly going with the flow. That was the truth, it was about one amazing girl.
"What about this girl? Who is she?"
"Her name isn't important. I was angry at the fact that Quinn stole her away not only from me but from her family. She's run away with his aid." I said through clenched teeth.
"Is this true?" He asked now looking at Quinn.
Quinn shook his head, "Of course not why would I help a girl run away? It makes no sense."
"Maybe not any girl but you would do anything for her and you know it because you promised me." I snapped. Quinn's eyes told me he remember the night of Megan's party, the night he promised to protect her.
"Yes, I would do anything for her. To make sure she was safe." He paused looking at me.
"She didn't feel safe with her family so she asked me to get her out. She was going to call you but she didn't want to ask another favour." '
I can take you to her.' He told me through the pack link.
"Alright," the principle said pinching the bridge of his nose. "both of you will serve a week of detention but Mr. Peter's gets to experience double."
My jaw clenched and my fists curled up. Breathe Sebastian. I nodded my head afraid to speak. "Alright go to class both of you. Detention starts after school." Quinn tensed beside me before getting up. I waited a few moments and left myself only to find coach was waiting for me.
I began walking down the hall pretending not to pay attention to him. But his hand latched onto my shoulder and he turned me the other way, toward his office. Neither of us said a word as he sat me down in front of his desk, in a chair that felt like needles only because of the tension. I sat on the edge as he he placed himself in his own chair.
"Let's get straight to the point." He said breaking the silence, "What the hell are you and Manhattan on?" My head shot up in surprise. He thought we were on drugs. I almost burst out laughing.
"Quinn and I aren't on anything." I said trying to stay calm. Coach leaned forward placing his elbows on his desk.
"There is no way in hell Quinn should have walked away from how hard you were hitting him against those lockers. Not to mention how strong you must have been to do that." I winced at the thought of the lockers, gosh I'm losing it, "So what are you taking?"
"Coach I'm not on drugs-" I said before he cut me off.
"Peters, as a teacher I'm to report any suspicions to my super visors-"
I then cut him off, "You can do a blood test! Or whatever to prove to you in not lying!" He tried to speak again but I only got louder, my voice filling with anger, "I'm not finished." I snapped at him, "I have not nor will I ever take drugs. I guess I'm just that strong."
He didn't buy it for a second. "You know that if there is anything to find... I can't let you play next season."
"You can't throw me off the team! I've never done drugs!" I placed my head into my hands leaning forward to place my elbows on my knees, "Just make a time to get me tested and I'll be here." I stood up from my chair not bothering to be dismissed. The cloud of anger and depression clung to me as I walked down the silent empty hallway.
I pulled out my phone and dialled Amelia's number again. After a few rings I was beginning to get disappointed, until her small voice answered.
"Sebastian?" I sighed with relief.
"Amelia where are you? I've been worried sick." I didn't care how clingy that sounded. I was desperate to know where she was. I wanted her close.
"I can't tell you." She said quietly.
"What do you mean you can't tell me? I'm not here to take you home I just want to make sure you're safe." She sniffed and the alarms bells in my head went off.
"Why are you crying? Amelia? Answer me." She chocked on a sob and I began to panic, "Amelia, I can help you. You just have to tell me where you are."
Before I knew it I was out of the school running towards my motorcycle. "Please." I said my voice cracking with desperation.
"Bridgedale." I hung up the phone and dialled her father.
"Hello?" Her grandmother said after a few rings.
"She's in Brigdedale." I hung up the phone starting the engine. It roared to life and I speed onto the highway.
In the distance I heard the howls meaning the Winter Mountain pack was on the run. I sped up going over the speed limit. It only took seventeen minutes to pick up her scent. My wolf instincts were going crazy.
'Bash where are you?' Quinn asked through the pack link. I didn't bother responding, completely pissed at the fact he left her all alone.
The 'Welcome to Bridgedale' sign came into view and I passed it at high speeds. I parked my bike close to where her scent was concentrated the most. Quinn had brought her to a warded apartment, safe place for the supernatural. You had to be invited in. I pulled out my phone again and dialled Amelia.
"Bash?" I sighed looking towards the building.
"I'm here. Outside the apartment. I can't get in without a key you have to invite me in." I could hear her breathing on the other end.
"It's not warded against werewolves." She said in a quiet voice. I sniffed the air realizing the scent of werewolf was everywhere. I didn't notice because I was so focused on her scent.
"What number?" She told me the number on the third floor and I took off running. I took the stairs, jumping from landing to landing, not bothering to actually use the steps. I ran to her door and knocked. "Amelia it's me. Let me in." My eyes widened and my pupils dilated. Blood. I smelled blood.
I took a couple steps back and I threw myself against the door, breaking it open. I saw her immediately on the floor holding her leg with a pool of blood underneath her. I took a step forward but she shook her head. I heard him before I saw him. He threw me against the wall smashing it into pieces. Amelia whimpered while I stared into the strange eyes of her attacker. Orange-brown. Hybrid.
I didn't get a lot of time before he flipped me over slamming my back into the floorboards. The air was knocked out of me and I began coughing. I needed to shift but I couldn't focus.
"Peter! Please don't!" Amelia called when he held his clawed hand in the air, "I'll do whatever you want just don't hurt him." Peters strange eyes flickered to Amelia. I took the opportunity to lengthen my claws and fangs before launching myself at him.
I threw him against the opposite wall diving my claws into his chest. Blood pooled around the wound, his lips trembling with pain. Blood appeared on his lips as he tried to pull my hand away.
"Who are you?" I demanded but he shook his head. I twisted my hand causing more blood to flow down his chest, "Who do you work for?" Still no answer. I twist weed my hand again getting a cry of pain from his lips, "I know what you are."
A hand landed on my shoulder. "Sebastian enough. We can take it from here." I looked over my shoulder to see it was my dad. He nodded squeezing once. I pulled my claws out watching Peters body sink to the floor. His blood dipped off my hand as I watched my father and Quinn's father restrain him. I ran to Amelia who was getting looked at by a pack Doctor.
I sank to my knees wiping my bloody hand across my shirt. Amelia reached out for me and I took her hand in my own. "Why did you run?" I already knew the answer but I wanted to hear it from her, "Why didn't you come to me for help?" She tried to answer but she was too exhausted, from the blood loss most likely. "It's okay we'll talk later." the Doctor took a belt and wrapped it around her leg to help stop the bleeding. I smoothed my cleaner hand over her hair and face before her father came charging in.
Amelia froze looking at me with panicked eyes. "Please don't let him take me. They want to take away my memories but I-I don't want to forget anything." She said tears forming in her eyes.
"It's okay I won't let anything happen to you."
Steven rushed to our side followed by her mother. "Oh sweetheart. We are so so sorry. We didn't mean to let you hear that." Amelia's face contorted.
"So it would have been okay to take my memories away if I hadn't over heard?!" They were both shocked silent as she gripped onto me. "I would have been dead already if you hadn't told me. You should have told me sooner." She was clearly upset and betrayed. A similar feelings I felt when I thought about how my parents had hid it from me also.
"We were just afraid." Her mother started, "Your brother ran away after we told him." Her brother? I looked towards her to see she understood.
"But I was told he was killed." She whispered. She was really pale and had sweat beading over the skin on her forehead. They shook their heads.
"After he shifted we told him about becoming alpha. But he didn't want it. He didn't want this life. He ran away with a human girl. We haven't seen him since."
Amelia's eyes flickered to me, "But I want this life. I want to be strong and fast and I don't want to be scared anymore. I know that everything will be okay."
I squeezed her hand gently before the doctor spoke up, "I hope your family moment is over because we need to get her to a hospital. She's losing too much blood."
"What happened?" Her father demanded.
"The boy, Peter. He threw me into the table." She pointed to the broken glass across the floor that I hadn't noticed before. Steven looked over to Peter who was restrained with heavy guards around him, all waiting for Stevens orders even though he was human now. How did he get here so fast?
He seemed to notice the eyes too. "Call Maria after you lock him up. She'll want to see him." My father nodded ordering them to carry him out the door.
"Where's the closest hospital?" I asked looking at the doctor.
Steven grabbed my arm, "There is no way I'm letting you take her." I growled ripping my arm away from his new human strength.
"I don't suppose you have a faster way of getting her there." I snapped.
"Enough!" My head shot towards Amelia after her outburst, "I want him to take me." I nodded pulling her into my arms before standing to my feet.
"Bash who took her?" Steven whispered into my ear. I know I should have told him but I kept quiet to protect him, mostly so I could deal with him myself.
"I don't know. I called Amelia and she told me where she was-"
"No more chitchat both of you you need to get her to a hospital. NOW!" I looked over to her to see she had passed out. I began to panic before I bolted to the hospital, on foot.
~
"She's asking for you." A nurse told me after about an hour and a half. I nodded getting up from the waiting room chair. I followed her down a few halls before she stopped letting me enter the room.
I shut the door behind me and walked to her bed, that only had a curtain separating her and an older woman. Her eyes were closed and her features were still pale beyond belief. I pulled a chair up and took her cold hand into mine. Her eyes fluttered open and her hand tightened. "I thought you left." She said her eyes filling with tears.
"I would never leave you." I whispered to her, brushing the hair from her face carefully.
"But you hate me."
I chuckled, "I only hated you because you were so perfect and because you reminded me of Trina." I reached out a wiped her cheek from a tear that had escaped, "But I never actually hated you really. I only hated myself and what I am because I can't seem to protect anyone that I care about." Her bottom lip trembled. "I don't hate you. I'm just afraid that I'll lose you... Because I can't protect you."
I stood from my chair and pressed my lips to her forehead. "I promise that I'll do everything I can to protect you."
Amelia's POV
FRIDAY
"It's so good to see you back at school." Megan exclaimed sitting beside me in math class. "You didn't miss much other than the fight Bash and Quinn had. They dented the lockers and the teachers can't come up with a reason why it happened. Bash was questioned about taking steroids." I smiled a bit after hearing about this. Mostly to give Megan a peace of mind. I could tell she was worried about me.
Megan had come to visit me after I was transferred to Ravenhills Memorial Hospital after my "accident". I gave her the whole story about what happened and she was just as shocked as most people would be. Peter, I had found out was what we call a hybrid. A spawn of a vampire and a werewolf. According to my grandmother they didn't happen often, however we had three in our pack.
Maria was the first one they had discovered. Who later found her mate and gave birth to their son who was also a halfbreed. I know genetics should have made him three quarters werewolf but he ended up just being half and half. And Lily joined our pack way after Maria did. Peter had talked to Maria and was given the choice to join our pack. However, he was still broken up about his vampire family as he was sired to the vampire king.
"Ms. Winters, I'm glad to see you have returned. Here's the handouts from the past couple of days." I took them from his hand and placed them into my binder.
"Thank you." Goodness I'm going to have a lot of homework to catch up on.
"Good morning ladies." Said Quinn taking a seat at his desk. His face was still bruised from Bash's not so friendly, 'thanks for getting Amelia hurt' and 'thanks for kidnapping her and not telling me about it'. "You guys ready to par-teh!?"
Megan smiled as Quinn brought up the dance tonight, that I was still debating whether to attend or not. Mostly because I was still limping from Peters throwing skills. Which made no sense considering that I've healed from worse. Quinn began shimmying in his seat making Megan laugh. I chuckled rolling my eyes at him.
Quinn and I hadn't talked about what happened in the apartment before he left. Frankly, I didn't even know what to say. I'm mean I liked Quinn and he wanted me, but I couldn't help but to keep thinking about Sebastian, who was in this weird friendship zone. He hadn't left my side in the hospital and he had come to my room to visit me every night since. He was my friend one minute and then he was avoiding me by the next. I just couldn't figure him out, but I also couldn't keep lying to Quinn.
Speaking of the devil, Bash walked in making eye contact with me. My heart sped up after giving me a smile. Apparently he's my friend at the moment. "Alright class settle down, settle down." My teacher said before he began the lesson. I looked over to Bash's seat across the room to see he was already looking at me. This was going to be a long first day back.
~
Quinn and Megan were in a huge debate about the lack of spirit weeks in the school year as I munched on my pizza. "We have spirit days for almost every sport there is!" Megan told him quickly trying to get him to stop complaining, "If you want to change it then run for student council!"
My eyes scanned the cafe until they locked onto Bash who was getting all grabby with Ally. I almost gagged losing my appetite. I pushed my pizza away and sighed. "You gonna eat that?" I shook my head watching Quinn eat what was left over from my pizza. Boys.
"Hey guys." We all looked up to see the quiet voice had come from Violette.
"What do you want?" Megan snapped at her. Violette lowered her head making her purple hair cover her face. She breathed in deeply and looked up pushing her hair away.
"I've quit hunting." she said looking down at her feet, "My father wanted me to become something that I'm not. I know that you guys are good people. You haven't hurt anyone." She looked over to Bash's table and sighed. "I don't want to be a hunter, I just want my friends back." I looked at Megan who looked like she was internally debating it.
"You're done hunting for good?" Megan asked her. Violette nodded playing with her hands.
Megan moved over gesturing to her that she sit down. I could see they had a lot to talk about and seeing Bash get manhandled wasn't anything I wanted to watch. This would be the perfect excuse to leave. "I'll catch up with you guys later." Quinn looked at me confused as I got up to leave. I pointed to the door and he pushed himself up to follow me.
"They needed some privacy to work things out." I told him after we were through the cafe doors.
"Girls are so weird. You all have to talk things out." I laughed.
"Yet guys seem to solve all their problems by punching each other or you know, shoving each other into lockers and denting them with inhuman strength." I said mocking his black eye.
"Yeah well if you hadn't noticed guys aren't good with words."
"Oh I noticed." I said with another laugh.
"So I'll pick you up around eight tonight." Oh right the dance.
My smile faded, "I'm not too sure if I want to go." I told him rubbing my arm.
"You have to go! Our dances are awesome, not to mention it's the first dance for you at your new school." He did have a point. It's not like it will kill me. I shouldn't judge before I've experienced it.
I groaned throwing my hands into the air. "Okay fine!"
"Ha ha! Alright! I'll see you at eight." And with that he walked off to join his football buddies. I sighed rolling my eyes. I walked to my own locker silently. I dug around for my sweater, the school was freezing today, but it was nowhere in sight. Bash pulled up beside me making me jump.
"You're still here." He said, the relief in his voice obvious.
"I thought Quinn was going to take you away again." his eyes were glowing with possessiveness.
I laughed, "I'm not going anywhere." I told him trying not to think about how close he was. Goodness I'm obsessed. I grimaced at the thought, he doesn't care about me seeing how he had Ally all over him earlier.
"You going to the dance tonight?" I asked changing the subject.
He shook his head. "Dances aren't really my thing." I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed.
"I'm surprised you aren't going with Mrs. McGrabby pants." I said with a laugh.
"Oh my gosh I know. She won't stay the hell away from me! She still thinks we're going to the dance together. I only said yes because she threatened you." My eyebrows pulled together, "But I think I can take her. I mean being an alpha and all now." I rolled my eyes before I shivered.
"Are you cold?" He asked making me nod.
"I thought I brought a sweater, but apparently not." He smiled pulling his sweatshirt over his head. My eyes locked onto his toned stomach as his shirt lifted along with it.
"Here take mine." He said fixing his shirt. I took it from his hand and pulled it over my head. I was engulfed in his warmth and scent. It was so intense I almost melted.
The bell rang overhead and we both frowned. His green eyes locked with mine before he turned away and stocked off. I watched his retreating figure before I grabbed my gym clothes.
~
"Hold still!" I groaned as Megan attacked my face.
"Megan I can do my own makeup!" I said as she held my one eye closed.
"Everything okay in here?" My mom asked poking her head in through the doorway to my room.
"Yes." I told her.
"No." Megan said the same time I did.
"Is there anything I can help with?" She asked looking hopeful. Since I came back home my mother has been trying to fix our relationship but I was far from forgiving either of them.
"You could start on her hair." Megan suggested ignoring my one evil eye. She switched sides holding my other eye shut.
My mom picked up the curling iron and began making my hair into perfect ringlets, like she used to do when I was a kid. It also wasn't too long before Grandma entered, poking at me too. Once Megan released me I slipped into my dress and stepped out of the bathroom making all of them gasp. "That dress looks even better on you than the first time!" Megan exclaimed.
"It's missing something." Grandma said eyeing me carefully. She walked over to my dresser picking up the moon crystal necklace she had given me. She fastened it behind my neck and let the pendant sit between my exposed chest. "Perfect."
"Oh sweetheart you look lovely." My mom started but the door bell rang cutting off her thoughts.
"He's here." Said Megan smiling, "I'll meet you at the dance later okay?" I nodded following her down the stairs, being carefully not to fall in these heels. I opened the door to find a smiling Quinn standing behind it.
"Hello m'lady." He said giving me a bow before kissing the top of my hand. My father cleared his throat and Quinn straightened, "Good evening sir." He said politely. I gave my dad a look to be nice, it's a good thing Bash hadn't told him that he was the one who took me to Bridgedale.
"Have a good night sweetheart. Be back by midnight." I nodded following Quinn out the door and down the steps.
"Sorry about that." I said after getting into his car.
He smiled, "It wasn't a big deal. I'm just glad he doesn't know that I kidnapped you. I'm sure he would have actually killed me."
We had light conversation on the way to the school. I wasn't nervous at all, I just felt so comfortable around him. "Trust me you'll have fun." He said parking the car. He got out and walked around the car to open my door. He helped me out holding my hand. I could hear the music from out here.
He held his arm out and I slipped mine through his. "Our school goes all out for these kind of things. You'll see what I mean when we get inside." Man was he not kidding.
The whole gymnasium was decorated. There were pits with dancing fake fire and icicles and and snowflakes were hanging from the ceiling. I was in complete awe, how could such a small town afford all this? There were already swarms of people inside dancing and getting pictures. The DJ was rocking out on his little stand and lights were going everywhere. It was hard to think I have third period in here.
"Amazing right?" Quinn said smiling at the expression on my face.
"I'll be honest with you, I was not expecting this. This must have taken forever to set up."
He pulled on my arm gesturing to the photo booth, "Let's go get a picture taken." I nodded following him across the gym still dazzled by the decorations.
We went through the line quickly and stood in front of the black curtain. Quinn wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled my close. "Smile." Oh and we did. The flash went off and Quinn started pulling me to the dance floor. I couldn't help but laugh at his horrible dancing.
"There you are! I've been looking all over for you!" Megan said pulling her date along. Jake and Quinn gave each other a nod before we went back to dancing.
"I thought you didn't like Jake because he's a werewolf." I pointed out to her after they left to get us drinks.
She shrugged, "He's still Jake... He's not mated yet either and I'm good with letting him go if he finds her. Plus I don't have to hide what I am around him."
The boys came back with our drinks talking about some football game on TV. Megan lit up when Jake kissed her on the cheek. I smiled, as long as she's happy I don't care.
"Punch is good!" I said to Quinn after taking a sip.
He nodded, "There's always good punch here!" The song that was playing ended and a slower song came on. Quinn put down our glasses and grabbed my hand, "Care to dance?"
I smiled letting him pull me to the dance floor. I wrapped my arms around his neck as he pulled me closer. I could feel the heat radiating off his body as we began to slowly rock to the music. "You are so beautiful." He said to me leaning closer and closer to my lips.
Sebastian's POV
MEANWHILE
"Where is everybody?" I asked sitting next to Mia in the Pack house.
"Most of them went to the dance." Tyler said as he plopped down in front of us yawning, "Yeah even Quinn went." He continued crossing his legs in front of him.
"Quin never goes to the dances." I commented confused.
"I'm not surprised he went, I mean considering he has a date." Tyler said leaning back to lay on the floor.
"A date?" I asked looking between the both of them.
"Yeah he took Amelia, to help her experience her first dance at our school or something." Said Mia with a grin on her face.
I stood up abruptly startling both of them. "Where are you going?" Tyler asked sitting up again.
"Going to the dance." I started down the steps of the house before Tyler caught up to me.
"Dude you should think this through. You can't just pound his face in."
"Oh yes I can." He grabbed onto my arm after I threw my leg over my bike.
"But what will she think?" He asked eyes pleading for me not to do anything stupid.
"At this point I could care less. He needs to understand that somethings don't belong to him." I sounded like a possessive dog but I couldn't care less in that moment. She was mine, not his.
I started up my engine and drove to the school not caring about the speed limit. I pulled into the school parking lot practically jumping off my bike to rush inside. She was here, I could smell her. The song playing throughout the room was slow and it was just a little too dark to make out faces but I found her.
Quinn and her were dancing a little too close for my liking. I started towards them when their lips touched. All the air went out of my lungs in that moment. I waited too long, I had lost her. Quinn was obviously enjoying it but Amelia seemed to like it too. I gritted my teeth together.
I was frozen in place watching them get more intense. I managed to move my feet turning around to punch the concrete wall. It smashed to pieces, most of them digging into my knuckles. I pushed through the doors hitting a couple on the way out. "Hey!" One of them exclaimed. My ears were ringing and my vision was completely red.
People moved out of my way and I stepped into the cold air outside of the school. I didn't bother grabbing my bike as I ran into the woods. SNAP!
I felt to my knees screaming in agony. I clenched my jaw tightly trying to get up again but another few snapping of my bones stopped me. I tried to withhold my screams failing miserably.
My bones shifted again before my skin felt like it was getting melted off. My fangs lengthened splitting my lip, the bitter taste spread across my tongue as I stifled another scream from escaping my lips. "Sebastian."
"Make it stop!" I screamed at the unexpected visitor.
"Sebastian you have to relax. You're going through the first shift again." This was nothing like my first shift as a werewolf. This was like calling a volcano a hot tub. "Relax." I finally recognized who the calming voice belonged you, the Moon Goddess.
I felt her light hands travel over my skin. I slowly began to relax beneath her finger tips. I pictured Amelia's face as she smiles while I let my bones slide into place. My fangs were longer now, along with my claws. Fur began to sprout from my body as the Moon Goddess knelt in front of me. "It's almost over."
Then the pain was gone. She smiled at me after I opened my eyes. "Stand up." I did as she told and stood onto all fours. She was so tiny compared to me, "It's going to be a little disconcerting for a while. You are going to become much bigger and much stronger. You're going to have to go through the learning process again." I thought of Trina in that moment and replaced her with Amelia.
"Yes you are right, you are going to be a danger to those around you until you learn control." Why did I shift tonight? I asked because she obviously could read my mind or something.
"You had to completely let loose, when you saw those two together you lost it. Causing your wolf wake up. You connected with your true wolf, upbringing the shift." She looked at the sky and sighed. "I must go now. I'll let you two talk."
Let who talk. 'Me.'
Who's there?!
'Sebastian relax. I am your wolf. They call me Barron, The Warrior.' I was still a little freaked out by the new voice within my head to respond. 'I am the wolf that was chosen for you before you were created. For the first couple of months I will be a voice in your head until we merge together to become one. Once we merge you will never hear from me again because I will be you. Your personality will also change along with your instincts.'
But I don't want to change who I am.
'You aren't going to change, you are just going to mature faster than you want to. We were born to be a Beta of the Winter Mountain Pack, you do not belong in the abomination you are in now. You do not bow down to anyone other than the future leader of the Winter Mountain. Do you understand?'
Yes. I responded.
'You and I have to begin our training. We are a danger to those of this town until we learn control, until we emerge as one.'
Where will we go until then?
'Up the mountains. There's someone there who can help us.'
What about Amelia?
'She will be fine with the mutt she is with. For now.' Jealousy coursed through my veins. Barron was clearly bothered too. Were Amelia and I mated to each other?
What about the pack? They won't have a leader.
'Things are going to get really bad soon Sebastian. It would be better for you to ignore all these thoughts until our training is complete.' I agreed thinking about Amelia one last time, 'We must go. It's a long journey ahead.'
I turned around and threw my feet forward only to trip over a root and face plant. We both laughed. This is going to take a while to get used to.
'All in good time my friend, all in good time.' I looked up to the sky to see the stars twinkled above.
We lowered our head to the ground and released a howl that shook the entire forest from its quiet nature. I began to whip through the trees leaving behind all the thoughts of my old life. I would have time to focus on them later.
For now it's time to focus on being a Werewolf.
