5. Big Bad Wolf
AN: Still with me? Great! As I've said before, slow updates due to the fact that I have another book. Once that's done this one will take priority.
I can feel the change in the air, Jenni's wolf is bristling right under the surface. Good thing the house is fully wolf proofed because I have a feeling that today is going to be a long one with no time for domestic distractions.
Jenni wakes earlier than usual, she's bumbling around in a confused state upstairs, my guess is that she hasn't gotten any real sleep. I can hear her crashing into things and growling at the inanimate objects.
I mind link some of the leaders in my pup groups to spread the word that all training is cancelled for today and tomorrow. I can feel their relief and happiness even though they try to hide it. I do the same for the rest of my sessions that are planned. They enjoy my sessions but no one really wants to be around me for long, they think I'm unnatural.
I link with Micheal and he promises to be at the house within minutes. For the next couple of days, our only concern will be for our baby sister.
I may not have my wolf but being able to mind link helps in making the pack think that I have one. Sure, I can get out of pack runs and such, but there's no way in explaining why I can't simply mind link another pack member in an emergency.
Jenni stumbles down the stairs and some of her nails have extended into claws, but I doubt she notices this. Her nail beds are bleeding from the new claws. It's minor but she has blood drops falling on the floor making a trail behind her.
"Hey champ. You alright?" I ask casually. I watch her enter the kitchen while I lean on one of the counters sipping my morning coffee.
"I feel weird Bex." Jenni scratches her head but winces at her sharp claws as they tangle in her blonde hair. She looks at her hands in shock, like she's just now noticing them. "What the hell?"
Micheal chooses now to come in through the front door. He passes our confused sister and makes himself a cup of coffee. I can hear his SUV running outside and from the way Jenni is looking around, I bet she can hear it too. The only difference is that she doesn't know where the sound is coming from or what it is.
"Guys...." Jenni finally picks up on the tension in the room. Even though Micheal and I look relaxed, our bodies are ready to spring into action should this go sideways.
Micheal has his hands up to look less threatening as he creeps up to her. His coffee cup is long forgotten on the counter. I sigh and place mine down, might as well get this over with.
I can visibly see Jenni's muscles tensing and relaxing underneath her skin. She's on the balls of her feet ready to attack but her brain is trying to figure out why her body is reacting this way around us. I can hear the growl starting in her chest, soon her wolf will come out to play but we'll be far from the house when that finally happens.
Micheal seems to step past some imaginary line and Jenni's body starts shaking. I know her body is ready to attack but she's holding back.
"Jenni, stay calm." He tries to sound soothing.
Oh brother..... I roll my eyes.
A snarl goes through her teeth and our sister is now a predator backed into a corner. Before Jenni can lunge at him I throw two apples fast at her face so that she has no choice but to sink her claws in them or be hit. Her distraction gives Micheal a chance to tackle her.
Sounds harsh, but I know for a fact that Jenni didn't feel a thing with the ridiculous amount of adrenaline pumping through her veins. With precious seconds left before Jenni frees her hands, I grab some low concentrated silver infused rope to tie her hands together.
Micheal doesn't stand up until I wrap the rope around at least three times before knotting it. We have strong Alpha blood running through our veins which allows us a higher pain threshold to silver.
Jenni struggles a bit before she catches the flash of silver in the rope and the small irritation starts to register in her brain. The rope isn't painful at all to her but its a shock to her system that her siblings tied her up with silver rope.
She looks up at us angry and I know she feels betrayed.
"You're starting your change Jenni. We need to get you out of the house before your wolf comes." I sound clinical but it gets the point across.
"Why couldn't you guys just tell me then!?" Jenni screams. Her canines are elongating so her speech will be distorted. She can break the rope whenever she chooses but she doesn't know that yet.
"That's a good question." Is my response. We both look at Micheal for an explanation.
He looks guilty for his dumb attempt at peacemaker, "I thought I'd try the soothing approach. Dad didn't take any chances during my change. He simply knocked me out and I woke up in the woods with him hours later."
Now that he mentions it, I do remember hearing Micheal's growls- then the next thing I know the house was deadly quiet. A new wolf in transition is touchy, get too close and they'll go ape shit. We get told the process all the time but it never registers when it's happening to the person. No one has ever seen the signs and has gone, "Oh! My wolf is coming, let me go get family and go into the woods for privacy!"
It's always been up to the loved ones or whomever to drag a transitioning wolf into the woods/isolated place or else they'll tear up whatever's in the vicinity. Just like now, I refuse to let Jenni fuck up the house and those of our neighbours when her and her wolf go for their run.
Jenni looks at Micheal likes she can't believe her brother could be so dumb but I just laugh. We help her up but we don't take off the rope. It's easier to let her think that she's tied up.
Micheal takes her to the back seat of the SUV while I grab all the things we'll need, which has been ready and packed for months now. I take a trip to the SUV and send Micheal to go get the rest. Jenni looks on confused in the back as we load up the trunk.
"Where'd you get all this stuff from Bex? Where'd you put it all?" Jenni's questions confirm that she really hasn't been paying attention to my preparations for the last couple of weeks either.
I wink at her. "I can't reveal all my secrets kid."
When my back is turned I hear her mutter, "You don't reveal anything to anyone, not even family."
Her comment stings but I know that this is only the beginning. Soon Jenni will be be shouting her truths whether she wants to or not.
Many believe that the wolf hinders your ability to lie during the change in order to judge your character.
By the end of tonight, Jenni will be raw from speaking her inner truths. It's tradition for families to take each other because it's assumed that they love each other enough to tough it out.
Most times, they do, but no one is really surprised when a family splits apart.
Pups see way more than what we give them credit for.
If a family doesn't want to risk the possible separation then they have every right to ask their Alpha to oversee the change in their place.
It's suspicious but completely admissable. After the first change then the family would join the new werewolf for the entire packs celebration.
When Jenni can take no more, her wolf will surface and together they will run through the night. They'll fuck shit up with their new strength and turn on all the woodland creatures with bloodlust. When they're ready, her wolf will come back and fight Micheal to prove her worth to the family. Normally it's supposed to be the oldest member present but since I have no wolf, Micheal will take my place.
On the car ride over to our private location, everyone is quiet. I can feel Jenni's inner turmoil but I can't do anything to help her, she needs it to happen. Micheal's hands keep clenching and unclenching on the steering wheel, I can feel that he's nervous.
I am too.
Micheal parks the SUV and none of us move. I think that all of us are scared of what's going to come out of Jenni's mouth tonight.
I move first because I see some clouds rolling in. Jenni might not care about the rain but Micheal and I will.
We find a nice spot for our camping stuff and start setting up. Jenni sits on a log staring off into space and muttering to herself. The rope wrapped around her wrists is frayed and holding on by a thread. All she has to do is push her hands apart a bit and she'll be free.
Micheal comes in with firewood and Jenni's head snaps up. She's glaring pretty hard.
'And so it begins.....'
"You got lucky." she snarls to our brother.
He replies calmly, "Is that so?"
"Yeah. If Eric didn't leave for the Counsel, you'd be his Beta right now." With the infliction in her voice, you could easily replace 'Beta' with 'bitch'.
It takes a minute for Micheal to calm down his wolf, there's no way in hell our brother could've been a Beta. Or parents Alpha blood runs too strong in our veins but there's a reason her truth is coming out like this.
We just have to get to its root.
Jenni calms down and looks entirely shocked at herself.
"Micheal, I'm-"
He cuts her off quick. "You're right. If our parents were still alive, Dad would've made Bex Alpha and I'd have been her Beta. So either way, I was destined to be someone's second in command."
"That's not true." I say sadly.
He looks at me confused, so does Jenni.
"No one would follow an Alpha female."
"That's bull Bex. Dad would've made sure that you succeeded after him."
"But since he's dead, you don't have to worry about that, do you Micheal." Jenni's back to anger. *Sigh.
"You think I'm happy our parents are gone?!" Micheal looks furious and hurt rolled into one.
"I think you got to be Alpha by sheer luck!" Jenni starts ticking of the facts her fingers.
"Eric will be on the Counsel so he can't have a pack of his own. Bex doesn't care to be Alpha, add to the fact that dad's not alive to push her into wanting the position. Plus everyone knows that if someone challenged you, Bex would've lose her mind. She's super strong and there's no one stupid enough to welcome their deaths that would be damn near guaranteed when she's involved. And finally, Alpha Hawthorne was only being nice to give you the pack because the rest of his kids are weak. Everything worked out for you!"
Micheal's mouth was open and I'm floored too.
"Well shit." Is all I have to say, when you look at it, it's kinda all true. No wonder Jenni's pissed.
Jenni breaks through her rope and lunges for me. I easily flip over and slam her into the ground. Some of her anger has seeped into me without my noticing it until now.
"And you! Why didn't you fight for our fathers honor! You let that monster live!" Even on the ground my sister holds her head up high. She struggles so I let her go and back away.
I didn't mean to be so rough with her even though she probably doesn't feel it.
"I wanted to kill him Jenni, believe me I did." I sit on the ground with my hands out to signal that I'm no threat. I also double up my mental barriers so that her emotions won't reach me again.
"But you didn't! How could you be such a coward!?" She screams. Jenni only stands up from the ground making no moves to get closer to me.
She knows who the stronger of us is.
"Is your memory that warped Jenni!? I was going for his throat before you stopped me!" I turn to look at Micheal who's calmly watching our exchange.
"And then I noticed Micheal holding mom.....You both needed me more, so I stopped." I can feel my old anger rising but I refuse to lash out at my siblings, they don't deserve it.
I'm glad that I'm sitting because I suddenly feel weary. Bringing up the past sucks the life out of me.
"Why didn't you challenge him once we were settled here? You could've taken the pack back." Micheal wants answers too it seems.
"There was no point. The anger and vengeance were gone. If I went back and managed to kill him, which was never that likely to happen, then I'd be the new Alpha of a pack that I despised."
Jenni and Micheal nod their heads in unison.
We understand now why Dominic's pack stood idly by as their former Alpha was murdered....
But we will never forgive them for their complacency. Werewolf tradition is harsh filled with blood and the fight for domanince. Dominic was the dominant wolf and the pack immediately latched onto his strength when their old Alpha fell because of it.
Jenni seems to have calmed down for now though her skin ripples in places. She scratches at it and doesn't seem to notice that her claws rip into her skin a bit too much making it bleed.
All too soon her anger comes back.
"Why didn't you guys tell me I was adopted?"
