34. Truth Serum
AN: I didn't explain but 'undead' is the politically correct term for zombie.
I feel his energy before he even speaks, my skin's hyper aware of his proximity even though it shouldn't be. I don't feel this with any other fae but then again they aren't representatives for their entire species.
This is the first time in nearly a week Will's even gotten close to me. At the daily meetings, Eric would growl if he came within ten feet.
As a matter of fact, so would I.
It's impossibly dumb to do so now though since I'm rattling this punching bags chain. I unleash a series of hits that can knock a full grown were out, just for the fun of it.
Imagining his face with every swing and kick.
It took me a solid two days to recover mentally from his attack, and it took me another day to get over the confusing emotions I felt because he hurt me.
Stupid. Fucking. Fae.
I don't wait for him to speak, it's not in my personality when angry.
"What do you want?" I snap knowing that my fists really want to kiss his face. Instead of responding immediately, I feel his cold hands on my shoulders.
All action stops instantly in response, confusing me.
Stupid. Fucking. Fae. Magic.
"I'm so sorry Bex." Will says when he feels the last of the tension leave my body completely.
"That hurt." I snap back at him, not caring for his apology.
I want to say more but that's all my mouth feels the need to verbalize.
"I was angry because you shielded me from your mind. I couldn't feel or hear a thing." Will sounds miffed.
"That's because you shouldn't have in the first place Will." I make my words slow because this fae honestly sounds as if he should have 24 hour access to my mind.
He takes a deep breath in.
"We're interconnected puppy eyes. To cut me off, hinders us." Will speaks softly and I can feel his lips so close to my ear.
It takes me a second to respond because, stupidly, I'm concerned that I stink from sweating so heavily and that he might smell it.
Involuntarily I cock my head to the side slightly to get my skin closer to his.
"If we're so interconnected, why can't I link Verena? It'd be terrifying but why can't I have full conversations with David?"
"You ask then fight all my answers."
"That wasn't an answer. Telling me we're interconnected doesn't answer the questions I'm actually asking." I retort.
"I came to say, 'I'm sorry.' Do you forgive me puppy eyes?" He whispers softly. His presence cools the sweat on my body, but goosebumps form having nothing to do with the chill in the air.
All thought flees my mind as I feel his nose trace the length of my neck softly. I don't even notice that I've extended my neck further for him to cover more skin until I open my eyes, and everything's tilted.
"No."
I walk away from the fae without looking back, all the while trying to shake off the pleasant chill nestled in my bones.
~
When I walk into the meeting room, the student counsel seems divided.
Beth and Verena are toe to toe while behind them are five beings strapped to chairs with bags over their heads. One side is Beth's while the other is Verena's. A small group of us stay in the middle to figure out what's going on but it's obvious that we'll have to make a choice once we get the facts.
"All we're doing is questioning them!" Beth shouts. I can feel her frustration, almost like she's been saying the same thing for hours.
"Which is what I'll be doing, witch." Verena looks bored while Beth is on the balls of her feet trying to get in Verena's face.
"No! You plan to torture them and then ask questions."
"Exactly."
"You can't torture these people!" Beth's outrage is adorable.
"Then how will I get my answers?"
"By asking questions."
"Which is what I'll be doing."
"After you torture them!"
"Why the theatrics? You seem to understand this."
Beth makes a high pitched scream of frustration but Verena doesn't flinch. Robert is in the middle group with me but he looks pained.
Probably because he's about to choose how I am.
Without making noise, I walk over to Verena's side and take a seat. I doubt this argument will be over quickly.
After some more words between them, Beth steps back and "peers" around Verena's shoulder.
"You agree with her Bex?" She doesn't sound upset or offended, just curious to why.
"Of course. You honestly don't expect them to give up any real information just because you said 'please.'" Since she didn't speak with an attitude I just answer neutrally.
Verena's side is smaller than Beth's.
"I have a truth serum that's already been administered. We don't even know if any of them are actually involved in this, it makes no sense to torture them until we know for sure." Beth argues.
Her logic has her side nodding and a couple more moving to back her.
"This serum of yours may be useless, they all possess magic. Truth only comes from pain and the fear of receiving more of it." Verena interjects.
I only notice that Eric is standing in the middle group when he shakes his while Robert nods his.
"And if they're innocent Verena? If they're innocent, we tortured them for nothing. Their memories can be erased but they'll always flinch when they see us and not know why." The rest of the middle group sides with Beth leaving Eric and Robert to stand alone.
"A message needs to be sent anyway. This can ensure that no one dare attack our members again without fear of retribution." Rose speaks softly but firmly from slightly behind me.
I'm shocked at seeing her on the side of violence but even more so when David suddenly appears and nods in agreement beside her.
"That only ensures that they'll armor themselves heavily against our attack." Will responds from Beth's side of the room.
"It's not like that'll save them." Katy says from next to Will with an eye roll.
Most of the room mummers in agreement and the tension dissipates.
"You have majority witch but they will be bled if I am not satisfied." Verena takes the loss humbly and sits close to our tied up guests.
She may have super speed but it never hurts to keep close in case things go awry.
Beth nods in forced acceptance and magics the bag off of one of the beings. Everyone in the room settles in silence as we wait for the witches' eyes to settle.
Her eyes narrow when they lock on Beth but she practically hisses when she notices Verena. Latin rapidly escapes her lips but a simple snap of Beth's fingers has her jaw slamming shut.
"Now. I'm going to ask you a couple of questions and you're going to answer them." Robert slides up next to Beth with eyes focused on his target.
"Screw you, you walking leech." The witch seethes.
I find myself chuckling at the insult along with some others. Her eyes widen slightly with shock before her face contorts back to anger.
Robert's face doesn't change instead he proceeds.
"Were you in attendance to the assembly?"
The fight not to answer is obvious in her demeanor but it doesn't take long until I see a substance move up along the straining blood vessels in her neck to her jaw. Almost immediately her clamped jaw opens unleashing her answer.
"No."
"Isn't the assembly mandatory?" I hear the wizard ask quietly.
Even though the question wasn't aimed at her, she answers with a quick ''yes.''
"If you weren't at the assembly, where were you?" Beth asks with suspicion. She's not a subject of interest anymore since the attacker had to be close. That doesn't mean she wasn't up to other things though.
"Some of the other witches and I were smoking in the fields since none of the wolves were going to be there." Her answer is immediate and even Verena can't deny the truth in her words.
Beth looks to Verena for confirmation before waving her hand and knocking the witch unconscious. The same bag goes right back over her head and the one on the being next to hers comes off.
Our next two are a witch and fae respectfully, neither have good things to say about Verena but neither really pose much of a threat either.
Number four on the other hand starts sweating as soon as his eyes clear. Robert can't even open his mouth before the males start pleading his case.
"We talked a lot about what to do with that murderer but no plan was ever cemented, okay? I'm innocent."
Will tilts his head to the side and walks right up to the wizard, not bothering to kneel down to the boy's level.
"If you were innocent, you wouldn't have known what we were going to question you about." His voice is arctic and the wizard responds as if he is suddenly chilled to the bone.
And maybe he is.
"I-I only know because what happened in the gym was obvious! That leech lost control which can only be done by magic."
"No, Verena could have easily just lost her temper." Will points out accurately.
Beth gives a syringe with clear liquid to Robert and he wastes no time stabbing the wizard in the neck and injecting the substance.
As a group, we ignore the wizards screams and wait until he's quiet before proceeding.
"You may not have done the deed but you knew what was happening. How?" Robert demands.
The wizard looks close to tears.
"I don't know. It was just obvious to me."
Something in his words earlier click.
"You talked of a 'we' earlier... did the plan come up in this group?" I ask uncertainly.
"No...wait, yeah it did! Someone brought it up but we shut it down." The wizard looks confused but excited to have something solid to tell us.
"Why?" Verena asks curiously. She only gives out a sharp toothed smile in response to the wizard's look of pure hate.
"Because you'd slaughter half the school before anyone even noticed!"
"Mmmmm, glorious." Verena licks her lips as if she can taste the carnage.
"You're a monster! Why would you allow her to even interim with the student counsel?" His rage is understood, I guess, but Beth doesn't seem to hold the same hate.
"Vampires have done a lot of bad but they're also the only ones who helped us when we needed it. Verena deserves her chance at being the female vampire representative. It's not as if she doesn't understand the events that have led up to today's supernatural society. There was no lie in her speech, we would have surely perished as a species had they not stepped in. "
The wizard glares around the room accusingly but none of us give him the guilt he's looking for. Especially not Eric or I, no wolf in their right mind cares about the predicament of the witches/wizards. Not after what those cowards did to us.
"They only helped because they got something out of it!" He argues after his guilt tactic failed.
"That doesn't change their actions, only the motivations behind them." Beth calmly states.
"She's still a murderer which is why using the spell would have led to a massacre." The wizard is floundering now.
"Obviously that didn't happen." Will mentions lazily.
"Well obviously, but none of us thought it was worth the risk to even try in the first place!"
"Someone did, and I'm guessing it was the person who came up with the idea." Beth declares and we all agree.
"Tell us everyone involved in that group of yours." Robert demands making the wizard break out into a sweat. None of the subjects were tied down but it's obvious that he can't get up and run away like he wants to.
"Look, I can't just give you everyone's name! My group is innocent of this!" He looks at Beth pleadingly but her face is a solid mask.
I don't even blink fully and suddenly Verena has her teeth in the wizards neck.
Beth doesn't look happy but she understands that at least she saved the first three. She looks at Robert and he pulls Verena off in seconds with a tsk.
"He tastes delicious." Her purr of pleasure has Eric growling in disgust.
Liquids are coming out of his eyes and the punctures on his neck. I'm not even sure he notices he's crying because his eyes are clouded over in terror.
"Names." Beth conveys quietly.
The wizard seems to understand that there will be no getting out of this because he softly gives up the members of his group.
"Which one of them introduced the spell?" Will asks not even sparing a glance at the small trickle of blood staining the wizard's neck.
"None of them. It was ...a random... I... can't seem to remember..." The wizard wasn't fighting the truth serum but something else entirely.
It seems as though there's memory blocker in this male's brain.
Smart.
Yet so annoying because now we'll have to question more members of his group.
AN: BAM! So you could consider this my two chapters, but I don't which why I posted both of them at the same time. I'm working on the next on but it's going to take more time, I'm sorry!
