32. Meet the Maker

AN: *awkward smiling* Happy New Year? Baby Yoda is honestly my life right now.... and I couldn't find one to for the chapter.

We're all silent as we contemplate Beth's spell idea.

"Do you think it'll work?" The male shapeshifter asks what we're all thinking, he sounds doubtful but there are no other options that we can think of.

"Yes, the problem is that this will only be a temporary fix. If the person decides to attack again, it won't take much to break through. They could attack at any time." This is Beth's completely open and honest answer.

"Is there some sort of way you can track the person if they do attack again?" David asks from the opposite leather couch of me.

Beth nods and it's almost like we're all on the same wavelength because Eric explodes.

"Are we seriously suggesting to make Verena bait?"

"She'll either be fine, or we'll have a way to find the 'person' the next time she's attacked." Robert sounds fine with the idea and Eric starts vibrating from restraining his wolf who apparently wants to show us all how not okay he thinks this plan is.

"How are you all going with this? She needs to get better, not patched up."

"Why is that Eric? It's not like she has plans with anyone for later." Will's voice hits the eardrum akin to barbed wire against flesh. It's hard not to flinch from the impact it has.

Eric slowly turns to Will and the two look ready to brawl. I can read the history clear enough between the two and it's coming close to the point where there's no other options until a downright war occurs.

David ignores them and tilts his head to the side.

"Since she's waking up, why don't we let her decide?" He asks as the true equalizer.

Everyone turns to Verena and she is indeed waking up. Her head rolls around slowly like she has a creak in her neck that she's trying to get out. Low words come out garbled but from their tone, you can tell that she says the same thing.

".....Marco.....Marco.....Marco..."

"Who the hell is Marco?"

Roberts hand disappears and instantly reappears with a phone that's ringing.

He answers and puts it on speaker for those who don't have exceptional hearing.

"What is wrong with my child Roberto?" The accented voice isn't necessarily deep but the age within it settles the room and weighs us all down. Dust couldn't do a better job if it tried.

I immediately know who this is and from the looks of everyone else, they do too.

Verena's maker has officially entered this conversation.

~

He doesn't shout or slam things but then again, older vampires rarely show emotion. If Verena and Robert weren't the way they are I'd still assume that they lacked all emotion right off the bat.

"Her wall has crumbled Marco. She's exactly like she was when she was reborn." Robert takes the lead which I'm sure David is thankful for because no one wants to talk to a peers parent, especially one you've never met before.

The second of silence on the other end feels like a small eternity as we wait for him to ingest Robert's words.

"Fix this." The command extends to us all and I can't help but cringe back as my nature fights it.

"We're working on it. The only thing we can really do is wait for the next attack." The pain on Robert's face is obvious, this situation is far from ideal but it's where we are.

"Verena?" Marco says her name with a reverence that most use when in worship.

I have no idea if he's calling out to her or something else, but Robert seems to understand and answers not missing a beat.

"She'll be unrestrained, but in a vulnerable state." Again her maker is silent but the air is full of his displeasure.

Are all older vampires able to do this?

"Am I needed?"

The pure terror that envelops Robert's face, I'm pretty sure, enlightens everyone that Marco coming to the school is the last thing we need.

"No! No. I will watch over her at all times and even then someone else in the Student Counsel will be with her. You have my word." Robert promises.

"Words are just that, Roberto." His tone deepens to that of lava even if his pitch doesn't, we are about to roast alive if someone doesn't give this vampire good news.

Miraculously, Verena groans and Marco's voice switches instantly. His voice softens to a legitimate coo but the words he speak to her are in a tonal language that I could never learn on Rosetta Stone.

She responds sluggishly and then opens her still black pupil- less eyes to view us.

"What is she saying?" Rose asks curiously from beside me.

Obviously the question is directed towards Robert but even he looks to be struggling.

"It's hard to learn a language that has died long ago. It's even harder to learn it when the only two beings who still speak it only do so in situations like this ..... from what I can tell, she's describing how she'd like to kill us all and Marco is telling her not to do so."

Robert shrugs like this is an everyday occurrence. Like Marco is constantly telling his charge not to commit mass murder- but then again it wouldn't be a surprise due to what Robert's told us about her early years.

"Do the spell now." Marco commands smoothly in between whatever he was telling Verena.

Beth wastes no time and places her palm directly onto Verena's forehead and the vampire jerks from the contact.

If Beth becomes scared when Verena's voice raises, she sure doesn't show it. Instead she plants her feet into the carpeted rug they're on and begins chanting.

Eric suddenly jumps behind Verena and plants his hands onto her shoulders just as she starts trying to throw Beth's hand from her skin. Her head tilts all the way back and she screams before speaking faster than before. Marco doesn't sound the least bit strained in keeping up pace with her though.

He doesn't even bother raising his voice like she does, he simply keeps his voice insanely soft as if he's trying to calm down Verena's demon.

Robert looks like he wants to help but like the rest of us, there is nothing he can do but watch.

After several minutes of intensity, I know we're near the end when Marco's speech changes to English and Verena's speech does the same only to switch back to the other language.

"She's broken free Marco-" Verena switches and practically spits the next words in the other language.

"I understand your anger my child but violence will do little but create more violence." Marco seems to be responding only to the demon's words because he responds easily to the next slew of words with ease.

"The world has changed-evolved, those humans are long dead. They will never harm you again."

Her laugh causes chills.

"More will come." Verena's English suddenly sounds thick on her tongue like she's never spoken it before and I'm dumbly coming to realize that English isn't Verena's first language. It probably isn't even close.

There was a study done that in times of great stress, multilingual beings tend to revert back to their first language and that's exactly what Verena is doing. But now that Marco has switched, it's forcing her to do the same.

Except it appears that the demon is having a hard time. Her demon is stuck with it's beginning while the Verena of now can make the right translations.

Damn, he's smart.

"Marco, she's stronger and I don't know-" Verena physically jerks as if she's being pulled back and the demon starts rattling off words again.

"Verena," Marco's worship tone comes back and it stops her words in their tracks. "put a stop to this, now."

He seems to understand that he won't need to say another word because nothing else follows.

Verena's head shoots straight forward and she seems to take back control. Her body relaxes into Eric's hold but she does push her head more into Beth's hand. We watch as her eyes slowly reconstruct back to their human like features.

The only struggle we can see is that her pupils try to expand but there's a grunt and they shrink back.

"Good." Marco comments like he can actually see what's happening.

Verena's body snaps towards the phone and Eric exhales sharply from holding her still. Beth's chants haven't stopped but I can start to see her body slackening from the strain of this spell of hers.

"Maker, I have failed."

"Turn that anger inward child. Let her feed on such emotions because they have no place being released on innocents." Marco's voice, though soft, is laced with a steel tight command.

"There is one who isn't innocent." Her voice heats up and Eric tenses from behind her, he knows the demon is restrained, now we have to deal with a furious Verena.

"Do as you see fit for them child." Marco nonchalantly says before hanging up.

No goodbyes. No, "I'm glad you're okay." Nothing.

It takes me a full minute to realize that he actually hung up the phone. Robert doesn't look fazed about the abruptness, instead he zips over to Beth as she finishes her spell and sways backward.

"It's done." She says and then promptly passes out into the vampires arms.

Rpbert picks her up bridle style and just stands there like he doesn't plan on ever letting her go. The sight has me looking away and swallowing hard.

I actively look for something else to focus on and my eyes catch Verena's.

"Hello Wolfie." She greets as if she's not bound to a chair with silver chains.

"Hello leech." I sigh as I stand from my seat. Rose doesn't make a sound of complaint as I let go of her hand.

"There has been an attack on my personage, I will need help to return the favor." She states getting right to the point.

I shrug as I get closer to her chair.

"I have nothing better to do." Accepting her offer even though it wasn't a clear invitation.

My hands nearly touch her restraints before they're slapped away. The slap isn't harsh but it reminds me that I am of wolf heritage and that my dumb ass was about to touch silver chains.

Will unlocks and bundles up the chains without a word.

I want to thank him but then I look to the school Principal who I've completely forgotten about.

"Will you be helping us?" I ask.

The room explodes in laughter and I feel heat rushing up my neck.

"I do not interfere with Student Counsel business." He states.

Outrage creeps over the embarrassment but a cool hand spins me away from the fae principal.

"He barges in and throws around his weight to feel better in certain situations but he has no real power to combat what we can." Will whispers into my neck as he ducks down to my level.

It's like a silent command was said because suddenly everyone's on their feet, moving toward the exit. Will pushes me to follow, which I do with him easily matching my stride.

Will places his arm across my shoulders and I keep it there because for a dumb second it feels like it's shielding me from my previous embarrassment.

Everyone crowds into the still empty hallway and head to a location unknown to me. It's silent between us, but a comfortable one that I'm starting to find I really like about this group.

Only when I notice Eric beside me do I brush Will's arm off.

"The only reason we went to his office was because it was the closest secure room. We're on our own, we've always been." His sounds a bit tired but my anger doesn't care.

"That, I understand completely. So we handle this ourselves until he buts in again demanding answers?" I ask hotly.

Verena understands what I'm not saying and swiftly turns around completely while effortlessly walking backwards.

"He will not interfere with my justice wolfie." The promise in her words makes me feels bad for the idiot that's fucked with her.

"She's right. The only law we follow is that of our own making." Will's voice matches hers and I get the thought to look around at the rest of the group to see if anyone was against the obvious murder in Verena's gaze.

Except, it wasn't only Verena who was murderous about this sudden attack.

It appears that the entire Student Counsel is now out for blood.

AN: Mark my words! Within the next two weeks, I WILL be uploading TWO chapters. Feel free to blow up my page to make sure I keep my word because I know I'm terrible at doing so.
