15. Under Scrutiny
AN: They have to take a plane to the edge of their continent then a submarine to get to the island. Bex will explain more.
The blind girl has been starring at me for a while now.
I've tried to ignore it but her gaze penetrates into my skin, peering through its layers to the very marrow of my bones.
To say the least, I'm unnerved by the witch sitting across from me. Blind or not, it's rude to blatantly stare at others.
'Fuck this.' I grumble to myself and stand up. All I wanted was some fresh air and now I feel like I need a deep, cleansing shower.
"You've repressed a lot of negativity. That's not healthy, especially for a wolf with Alpha blood." The blonde blurts out before I can even take a step away from her.
I take a deep breath in to calm down my anger.
Now she wants to have a conversation with me.
I glance over my shoulder at her and shudder. Her "gaze" is locked on the location of my eyes.
Yet she'll never know their color or shape.
That is unless I decided to tell her, of course, but even then her perception of colors isn't like my own.
"You aren't afraid of me and I can't figure out why not." Her voice sounds apologetic but there is only curiosity surrounding her.
She's like a child, only apologizing because she has to. Because it's what's expected when you're caught in the act.
Say what you want about me but at least with my social skills, I know better.
My silence answers her, instead of leaving I sit back down to study the witch.
Eye for an eye and all that.
Fear is nonexistent in my reaction to analyzing her. She makes me uncomfortable, not afraid.
We stare at each other for some more time before a silent truce is met. She won't bother me anymore and I can enjoy being above sea level.
The submarine is suffocating, I don't know how Eric can walk around with no problems. I don't even have a wolf and I'm going insane without solid land under my feet. Fresh air in my lungs, a strong wind to toss my hair around.
It's the biggest annoyances that you miss when you don't have them anymore to complain about.
The plane ride to our drop off point was exhausting, but I'll take it again if it means I'll never have to be in this cramped submarine.
Decades ago, it was decided by The Counsel to no longer use basic ships to get to The Isle. With modern technology, they'd be easily seen. Now supernaturals have to travel by submarine and witches cloak it, just like they did with The Isle eons ago.
'Maybe the witch in front of me is helping to cloak us.' I wonder.
By now I should just ignore her, but I can't anymore. I'm curious too, nearly no one on the submarine has talked to me and it's because I scare them. Maybe she and I do have a common ground.
My mental barriers are thick but I can still sense their general feelings. I walk by and either they freeze up in paralysis or run away. Fight or flight.
Now that I go it, I used to make those in Michael's pack react the same way, over the years they got used to my presence though. I think.
Intrigued, I study the witch's physicality more. She's nearly the exact opposite of me. I intimidate by the look of my muscles and my gait. She has to be strong magic wise or I have to be missing something.
She's blonde haired and blue eyed, like Jenni, but she is far more pale and her body is slimmer than my sisters'. Her muscle mass is non existent. I swear if a strong wind were to blow, she'd fly away with it.
"My name's Elezabeth, or Beth to my friends." She's no longer looking at me, her face is tilted towards the sun.
Her friendly introduction is cute but I don't care about knowing her name.
Werewolves have a huge beef with witches. I can't fight my bias, she rubs me the wrong way.
"I already know who you are. We're both going to be serving as interim leaders on the Student Counsel this upcoming term. I've been in for the previous one and so far I haven't been kicked out. You wouldn't believe how many people can't even last a week!" She babbles.
I can tell the witch is nervous now, she thinks that I've somehow left her. That maybe my depart was too quiet for her to pick up. Her voice carries so it wouldn't be hard to do just that, and struggle through the rest of my day.
"Everyone on this boat is either scared of me or intimidated by my presence. Except Eric, and now you. I just want-" Her vulnerability has me breaking her stream of sentences before she gets too personal.
"Why would anyone be scared of a blind witch?" I ask, to either enrage her or at the very most, to change the direction of this conversation.
Her instant relief penetrates the air and the feel of it makes my skin itch. She needs friends but I have no olive branches to give her.
"I told you my name right? Most people already know about me..." She trails off.
I shrug in indifference knowing that somehow she knows what I'm doing.
"I don't care much for witch politics or for idle gossip about other supernaturals." I inform her.
"Well then I guess you don't know that Verena is coming too. She's the interim female vampire this term, if she can hack it." The witch smugly informs me.
"What!" I nearly bellow. My focus is now undivided.
I may be distant from chatter but that vampire is infamous for her insanity. She's killed more witches and drank from more fae than any other vampire. They say that fae blood makes vampires unstable and the way they talk, it's almost like she always has it in her system.
Verena is only allowed to live her second life because her maker is loved by so many. Marco, her maker, has done so much to help the supernatural community stay hidden-that no one would dare attack his only heir.
No matter how much hell she raises.
"Are they fucking insane?" I scoff after my shock wears off.
"Maybe, maybe not." The witch replies.
"That vampire has no respect for diplomacy. Her motto is to 'shed as much blood as possible'! They should've just skipped her name on the list and moved on." I argue.
"They say the same things about you." She mutters.
Shock weaves itself into my system, again.
People talk about me?
"It's not easy for the rest of us, you know. Yeah, we have our powerful families but that doesn't always mean that their heirs are the strongest leaders. With wolves, and correct me if I'm wrong, only Alpha blooded males and females are the strongest. There aren't outliers in that respect so you all know exactly who to look at. The rest of us have to evaluate our entire populations to find them. Your list is far shorter due to your requirements. Missing even one person can set back The Counsel, so yeah Verena will sit and if she isn't the one- no harm done in us trying." Her passion is clear on this aspect.
She seems passionate and well informed. I can't help but wonder why they haven't made her position permanent yet.
AN: I'm so sorry y'all! I got stuck in my other book, and when stuck in one you get stuck in the other. This chapter isn't where I like it but I can't NOT update.
