Chapter 5
Four years had come and gone in no time.
Jason had begun to monitor both Victoria and James. He had started to notice a bond beginning to form between the two, which could become dangerous in the future if it continued down the path it was on.
"Schmidt won't be pleased if our assets continue down this road. We need to change something in the girl's training." Jason told Rumlow, his voice was grim.
"She's ten now. She can start learning how to use a firearm, and she still needs a dosage of the serum before we can move forward" Rumlow pointed out to Jason.
Jason nodded and thanked his friend as he walked down the hall where Victoria's cell was. He was pleased to see that she was already dressed and ready to start her daily lessons.
"Good morning Vic. Sleep well?"
The girl nodded and and followed Jason out of the cell like a dog trained to follow it's master. Her eyes didn't wander the halls as they had when she first arrived. Her obedience had never wavered from her commands and Jason could gladly propose to Schmidt that she could be used in the field.
"Will my training go as usual today agent Grey?" Her voice broke the silence between the two.
"No, we're doing something a little different today." Jason stated
"What will we be doing exactly?"
"Well, we have to give you a special type of serum. It wont hurt you. It'll just make you stronger and help with your physique."
He walked her into a room that was full of different doctors and scientists. On the sidelines, Schmidt sat with his head medical professor Doctor Zola. Next them, surrounded by two guards on each side, sat a nervous James Barnes. As Jason set everything up, he gave James a sick smile.
'Oh God. This can't be good.'
James swallowed thickly and watched the child that he had trained take a seat where she was directed.
Once she sat down, an IV was placed in her wrist. She flinched slightly as the needle pierced her skin, but soon relaxed. She stared at her wrist as the serum worked its way into her bloodstream.
"It's very uncomfortable." The girl told Jason.
"It'll be over soon. Just give it a few more minutes." He told her gently, watching the packet of serum dwindle down to a slow trickle. When he saw Victoria squeeze her eyes closed, he pulled the IV free and took her back to her cell.
James took a step after them, but was kept in place by the guards posted around him.
"I see that you don't like the child to be in pain." Rumlow said from his station in the room. A smirk rested on his lips as he made the remark.
James seethed quietly and glared at the agent. He vowed that he'd regret everything he put Victoria through. as everyone left the room, James heard the child's pained screams as the serum did its work. At the sound of her screams, his blood began to boil.
'Jason.'
James walked quickly down the hall and spotted the man he was looking for.
Jason knew something had changed when the soldier pulled his pistol out of the holster. James grabbed the mans collar and pushed him to the ground. In seconds, the pistol was cocked and fired.
Though the bullet had pierced Jason's heart, he didn't die instantly. He smiled at the furious soldier and laughed lightly.
"How dare you hurt that poor little girl. All she wants is to go home to her parents. She doesn't belong here."
Jason's smile only grew as the words left James' lips.
"She doesn't have any of what you claim she has."
James narrowed his gaze at the dying man. "What are you talking about?"
"I killed them. I killed them both."
After the truth had been brought to the light, Jason took his final breath. James stood numbly for a moment before walking into the little girl's cell. She didn't scream anymore. Her transformation was complete.
"Hey Vic." James said as he sat on the edge on her bed.
"Hello." She smiled and sat next to him.
He rested an arm around her shoulder and prepared for what was coming next.
"There's something we should talk about."
