Chapter 19
"Let's go! You're going to enjoy your first day of freedom after spending weeks in that hospital bed. Steve's already given you the day off." Vic told her father as they walked closer and closer to the garage.
"You really think I'm not going to enjoy my first day of fresh air?" He laughed.
Vic had spent days planning her father's day off. She was determined for him to enjoy this day no matter what.
"Of course not. I just want to make sure that you have a nice day today. I gotta look out for you y'know." She nudged him in the arm slightly.
James laughed and pulled the cover off of his motorcycle and handed the girl a helmet.
"Where to first?"
Vic smiled. "I made reservations at a nice restaurant for us. Thought you'd like it better than what you get from vending machines and the empty cafeteria."
"Sounds great. Just tell me where to go." He smiled and started up the bike, speeding away from the base.
"I was thinking that after lunch we could go to the farmer's market they are having downtown. Maybe even go shopping for some records."
"You read my war file didn't you?" He laughed as he drove.
"I did. Turn right."
"So do you like the old me or who I am now?" He asked.
Vic thought for a moment before she responded. "I think I would've loved to meet the nineteen forties James Barnes, but the one I met is the best version out there."
James smiled and parked at the restaurant that Victoria said she booked.
"My treat." She smiled.
"Whatever you say."
After they ate, Victoria took her dad down to the farmer's market and then to the bookstore so he could pick out some records that he used to listen to.
"Hey, can I take you somewhere fun? I want to talk to you about something." He asked, handing her the helmet.
"Sure." She nodded.
Vic's mind began to wonder what it was he wanted to talk about. The last time he said there was something he needed to tell her, her parents were dead. The bike's abrupt stop made her snap back to reality. He helped her off and lead her to an empty bench.
"What do you want to talk about?"
James swallowed and took a breath.
"You see, since we pulled that escape a few weeks ago, Hydra is going to be on our trail. Steve thinks that everything will be fine and that S.H.I.E.L.D. can handle anything that's thrown at them, but in truth, they can't."
"Why are we talking about this? Are we moving away from the Triskelion?" Her brows furrowed in confusion as she tried to understand the point of the conversation.
"Soon, its not going to be peaceful like this. I just want to make sure you understand that, and I want you to promise me something."
"Of course Dad, anything." She nodded.
"Promise to do whatever I tell you without hesitation. This is really important to me so I need to hear you say it."
"I promise." She told him.
'Why are we talking about this kind of thing? Everything is under control. He'll see.'
