" The day you broke my wall and
stepped into my personal space.
I despised you "
The reindeer trudged through the snow, trying to find food so they could survive the winter. Bunnies were hopping around, fur snowy white. Usually, it would be a quiet morning. But today, not so much.
"Yah! Kid! Get your ass back here right now!" she shouted, her voice echoing through the area, scaring away the deer.
"Whee!" Jeongin slid down the hill, totally shutting out her voice. When he landed in the snow with a thud, he got back up and ran around barking, scaring away the animals. The bunnies dug themselves into holes and the deer ran away as the little bear barked loudly.
"Oh my f***...." She cursed as she tried her best to keep up with Jeongin, but he was too far away.
"Why? Why did I decide to babysit this pup? What the freak is wrong with me?" She groaned in regret.
"He said he wouldn’t mess around!" She cursed under her breath a few times, hot from chasing the pup.
"I swear to God, when I catch him–" She started to pick up the pace, closing in on Jeongin.
"You, kid, are so ground–"
"Look, noona! The stream! There might be some fish we can catch! Looks like we are having lunch and dinner after all!" Jeongin cheered as he jumped up and down. She looked up at the stream ahead. The water was clear and beautiful.
Surprisingly, it was not frozen like she had expected. She shot a glare at Jeongin who immediately stopped jumping, looking guilty. Her glare was so intense that he looked down at the snow nervously.
"I’m sorry–"
"I told you to keep your voice down. We could have had reindeer instead of just fish. There is nothing to be happy about," she scolded him. Jeongin whimpered.
"I’m really sorry. I didn't mean to–"
"I don't want you to be sorry. I want you to correct your mistakes." Jeongin looked up at her, thinking hard.
"How about I catch the fish? I will catch as many as I can!" he said excitedly.
"Can you even catch a fish?" she asked, despite already knowing the answer. Jeongin’s excitement faded.
"I...uh...no..." he said sadly and sighed. She looked at him, his head hung low in disappointment. She sighed and started walking towards the stream.
"Then learn," she said simply. Jeongin's eyes widened and he looked up at her.
Excitement started to flow back into him again. "Are you gonna teach me? Yes! So do you have any tips that I should know? Like catch the fish with my sharp claws? Oh, oh! Or even bite them with my sharp teeth! Just tell me everything, I am very sure I can learn it in seconds!" he rambled excitedly in one breath. She gave him a judging look but was met with his shining, puppy eyes, full of excitement, and sighed.
"I’m not gonna give you any tips yet," she replied, walking towards the stream. Her reply confused the little pup behind her. He ran up to her.
"Why not?" he asked.
"Actions are better than words, kid," she replied.
"What do you mean, noona?" he asked as they both stopped walking. They had reached the stream. She looked at him, emotionless sapphire eyes glinting when the light from the sun hit them.
"Watch and learn." Jeongin’s mouth formed an 'O' shape when he finally understood what she meant. He nodded.
"No questions. Be quiet and don't make any sound. Just watch," she whispered as she lowered her body a little. Jeongin nodded again and followed her every move, belly brushing the floor.
Her attention was zeroed in on the fish swimming in the stream. She shut away every noise, everything that could be a distraction. It was only her and the fish in the stream. Jeongin was copying her every movement. She stood completely still, watching as the fish swam back and forth fast as lightning.
"One wrong move, starve till dinner," she reminded herself.
Living as a bear for so many years, she had learned to hunt all by herself without anyone's help. It was hard. Hunting is not always easy. There had been times where she had gone without food for days. Life had been difficult. She wished she could end it all but she couldn't die with this cursed body of hers. There was no use starving to death. Starving was a torture.
One day, she stood up and was determined to get a successful hunt. She actually did it. A whole reindeer. Even though she pitied it and the meat was raw, she had to eat it. She had no choice.
The moment she took a bite she enjoyed it and turned into a savage animal, devouring the entire reindeer. Some wolves came by to steal her food but it ended badly. She killed one of the wolves, ripping its head off, leaving the other wolves traumatised. Her bear instinct had come out. She wasn't herself that day, but eventually, she found out how to control it.
One fish was swimming closer. She lowered her body, ready to pounce. Her eyes glinted in the sunlight.
"The fish!" Jeongin shouted and immediately jumped up high to catch the fish.
"Wait, kid–"
Too late. Jeongin jumped into the stream, causing the cold water to splash onto her face. She flinched a little and squeezed her eyes shut. When she opened them she saw Jeongin sitting on the stream. Half of his body was submerged. The boy looked around in confusion.
"Huh? Where is the fish?" Jeongin asked, looking around to find the fish. If she was in her human form, she would have facepalmed.
"Kid, what did I say?" she asked in a low angry voice.
Jeongin looked up, feeling frightened. For a second, he felt like he was the prey instead of the predator.
"Did I miss anything?" he wondered.
"I...uh...what did you say?" he asked, clueless.
She was doing a good job keeping her composure, considering she wasn’t shouting a whole lot of inappropriate words at him.
"I told you to watch and learn," she said, trying her best not to shout.
"I...uh...did...watch and learn?" he said, unsure what he did wrong. It was starting to get cold in the freezing water, so he stood up and got out, shaking himself off, all the while staring at his noona.
"Did I do something wrong?" he asked again, flinching when she abruptly turned around and glared down at him.
"Which part of watch and learn you don't understand? I told you to watch me do it first and learn from it. Now we are gonna starve till dinner," she explained in a stern voice, trying her best to control her anger.
"I–I’m sorry...I am so clueless...obviously I am not ready. I’m sorry that I caused us to miss our meal. I’m such a disappointment," Jeongin said as he lowered his head, unable to look up. His words made her heart ached.
"F***! Curse my weak heart," she thought angrily. She had a soft spot for cute things. She started to mumble to herself again. Jeongin finally looked up, and his puppy eyes made her heart melt. For a second, she wanted to dip her head into the stream to hide herself.
"Fine! I forgive you! Just stop saying you’re sorry. I told you to correct your mistakes and not say sorry because it's useless. Also, you are not a disappointment. Every bear makes mistakes, but they learn from them. So, did you learn from your mistake?" she asked and Jeongin nodded.
"That I should be quiet when hunting," he replied, standing up properly.
"And?" she asked. He looked away, mumbling to himself, wondering what else there could possibly be. She sighed and answered herself.
"It's patience, kid. Patience."
"That is your first lesson. Patience is important when you are hunting. You need to wait for the right moment before you pounce on your prey. Miss the timing, starve to death," she explained and Jeongin nodded vigorously. He mumbled the word patience repeatedly.
"Are we going to starve?" Jeongin asked. She looked down at him and hummed. Then she started to walk away, confusing Jeongin once again. Despite this, he followed her obediently.
"We are going to find a reindeer. Keep your eyes peeled," she finally answered the pup after a 5-minute walk away from the stream.
"Are you always that slow in answering?"
"Why do you always ask questions?"
Jeongin pouted because he knew she was right. She smirked internally, claiming her victory. He followed her quietly. Together they walk towards the sun, on a journey to find a reindeer so they wouldn't starve.
