WH 2
His words were that or a loving husband, something my mother didn’t ever really have. It was then that I noticed she was wearing a twenty caret diamond tennis bracelet. I also started to see that a lot of the house items were newer and safer for her. Our appliances were out dated and old, but there were new stainless steel ones. I started to cry, he had been taking really good care of my mom, and I didn’t even notice. “Oh honey what’s wrong?” She put the cup down to hug me.” I cried a little harder. “I’m sorry mom, I didn’t even know, and now your still trying to take care of me.” I wiped my eyes on my sleeve. “Edon, its okay. Look its my fault ‘I shook my head’ yes it is, I never told you why we left or what was happening to you, I was scared and didn’t know how to” she started to cry. John got a little uncomfortable, but stayed put…for the time being.
“Edon, I will tell you what happened. The day I told you to stay in the house, that day you went outside to play with you friend. When your glasses came off and your hair fell out of hat. You were known as the wolf child, your father was…is a high chief to an Indian tribe. You have the same everything as him. The people knew who you were and wanted you to be a leader there. But you were just a child and I didn’t want the power to go to your head.” She paused while John handed her a tissue.
“ Why does it matter? Your not a wolf mom, so wouldn’t that make me just a half breed?” I was a little confused by the whole thing. Then John broke in, “No, unlike Vampires, wolves normally don’t need two full blooded parents to have a full blood child. Since your father was a pure blood and a chief, that makes you a full blooded princess. Your name means wolf, the only reason the people didn’t figure it out as quickly is because your mother named you wolf in a different langue, better know as French.” He gave me a few minutes to take that in before continuing.
“ Love do you want me to give her everything?” He asked my mother. She nodded to him. “Okay. Being that your female, you are prized more. Female wolves are rare in packs, and if there are females in a pack the norm is one to two. Three is hard to come by. Packs that don’t have any females will hunt for you, and being that you’re a blood princess your worth just went through the roof.” He sighed. I started to talk when he started again. “Picking a pack for Werewolves is not like picking out a car, if you pick wrong it’s a bitch to trade it in. And again since your female the likeliness of them letting you go is almost slim.”
“John” I broke in before he could start again. “Yes” I wiped my eyes one more time. “Do I have to be in a pack?”
The look he gave me was pure glee, “Umm no you don’t but that just means your going to be chased a lot.” he was waiting for me to ask another question, I think. My mother broke into the conversation. “Edon have any wolves come to you yet?” She asked. I thought about it for a minute. “No, most wolves don’t live in the city, so if there was one I probably wouldn’t see them.” I looked back at John who was fiddling with the I pad again. “Okay well that will not last long, your almost twenty which by wolf points means your within breeding rights.” I stopped him “WHAT!” I turned to my mother, who was nodding her head yes. “When you hit twenty you will start to smell more like a wolf then a human. That’s probably why no other wolves have bothered with you.”
I sunk lower in my chair hugging my stuffed toy. “What am I supposed to do if they come looking for me?” I asked, it was an open question, I really didn’t care who answered it.
John spoke first. “Well your mother and I have been talking about moving, the city is to noisy for her and you are gonna need room to run, wolves get pissy when they can’t run or hunt.” I grunted to myself. “We were thinking since I can find wolves just as well as any wolf can, I can do some recon work and make sure there isn’t a huge population of wolves at the next location we chose to move to. That way you won’t have to worry as much about being chased.” John smiled and rubbed my mothers hand to calm her nerves.
“That would be nice, I don’t think I’m ready for pack life. I like being on my own.” He laughed at me. “You should have been born a male wolf or a vampire, they can get away with that.” My mother sighed, she was looking sad again. “Its okay mom, we’ll figure it out.” I held her other hand and smiled at her. The world must be coming to an end, when a human, a Vampire and a Werewolf can be in the same room and help each other out. One things for sure, if we get found out by a group that hates one or more of our kind, they’ll have a field day killing us off. I smiled again at mom.
It took a total of three months to find a place that was almost free of other wolves. The location was higher north in Ma, called Lanesborough. It’s surrounded by more than six state forests, and national forests. John meet with a realtor and bought more than 50 acres, within a month he had two houses built on them with running water and electrical.
Got to hand it to him, the man can get shit done. I had requested that he have my house be a log cabin with two bedrooms and a cat walk with at least 1 ½ bathrooms. Not only did he do that but he had all new appliances installed and furniture. John knew how to add luxury to a log home, I had a soaking tub in my master bath and a huge queen sized bed. On top of which he had cameras installed for safety, which I think was to make my mother happy.
I had a nice deck with a log swing, and bug netting so I could stay out at night and not get eaten alive. It was a nice home, but I still wanted to work, despite my mothers protest. I just couldn’t sit at home all day and do nothing. If what John said was true whether or not I worked wolves were gonna find me sooner or later. I ended up getting a job at one of the state forests, I got to ride around on a 4 wheeler. I made enough money to buy good food and a new fish tank for some noise and company. I loved sea horses so that’s what I got, black and gold sea horses danced in my new tank.
To get to work I had to buy a car, so I settled for an old pick up that wouldn’t draw to much attention to myself. It was silver and had some rust around the doors. It had 4 wheel drive which was a must up here, since we would get up to five feet of snow. I started my day with a cup of coffee at 7AM and worked till about 1PM. I look for anything out of the ordinary, such as hunters without the right permits, hikers who are lost, or poachers. I was checked on by John every so many days, he would give me an update on my mom and what was going on around the bigger towns.
“How’s she doing John?” I asked before I even got the key into the lock. “Your getting better at knowing when I’m around.” I opened the door and we both walked in. “Yea well you smell like mom.” I smiled at him, while putting my rain coat on a hook next to the door. “Humm gunna have to work on that.” He sat down at my small circle kitchen table.
“She’s doing better, by the way. Took her shopping at a cute shop yesterday and she wanted me to bring you this.” He places a small wooden and jade horse on the table. It was a beautiful piece, standing there with the mane blowing in the wind. I picked it up and rubbed my fingers around the face, looking around my kitchen I found a spot on my window sill that was empty, and carefully placed it on the sill. Sitting down on one of my kitchen chairs, I began to unlace my boots. “Your mother is making pot roast tonight….you coming?” Jonathan never could just come out and say what he really wanted to say. “Why you got something you wanna discuss with me?” I smiled as I pulled the boot off and tossed near the front door.
He half heartedly grunted at me, which was short for yes. “What is it John? Out with it already!” I huffed trying to pull the last boot off. “We want you to quit working!” He finally blurted out. I figured it was going to be that, or something else I didn’t want to talk about. “I thought we had this conversation…..like five times already?” He knew how I felt about working, it gave me something to do with my time and I didn’t feel like a money hungry bitch. “Yea I know, but your mother thinks that your going to get more attention if your out all the time.” I cut him off. “I’m not out all the time, I only work a few hours a week and besides I’m helping people. Just last week I “found a family who was lost” (he said along with me)” I growled, hated when he did that. “Yes, Edon we know you saved those people, but what if it was a pack and not some scared family?”
He had a point, but that wasn’t going to come out of my mouth. “Do we really have to talk about this now? All I want to do is take a hot shower and put some clean clothes on. Okay!” standing up I put a hand on his soft hair and walked into my bedroom for some clean clothes and to turn the shower on. “That’s it ignore me, you know your mother is going to bring this conversation up again too right?….Edon Right” He was speaking louder to over noise the falling water in my bathroom, I heard him but I chose to put ear buds in and listen to some rock music instead.
Unlike most people, which John is not. He thought it was best to swing the bathroom door open and make sure I heard him. And there in all my naked glory, I stood. “DAMN IT JOHNATHAN, I’M GOING TO KILL YOU” I threw a bottle of shampoo at his head and caught him just upside the head. “Oww…you look good!” He smirked. “GET OUT JACKASS” I grabbed another bottle, but he closed the door before I could throw it in a more personal area. I realized that I could shift from human to wolf fully clothed without a problem, but coming the other way didn’t work. Clothes don’t tend to last when your 250lb wolf. Being naked was just one downside to being a werewolf.
John had seen me naked tons of times, and he knew it bothered the hell out of me, so to make me feel uncomfortable he would make stupid comments. I took a longer shower then I really wanted to, but I had to calm wolf back down. She still wasn’t crazy with a Vampire living with our mother, never mind seeing us naked. It was a personal thing. It was a Friday night and I had nothing to do, dinner at mom’s was like all the rest of the times, she would give me a talk about how she was worried I would be found. I would calm her with a funny joke and then head home in my usual fashion.
Saturday was my day off, I could do whatever I wanted. Which was sleeping in late and having a huge breakfast….at moms.
