Oikawa
Oikawa sipped his water, eyeing the other end of the table over the rim of the glass. Placing his water cup down with a satisfied grin, he kicked the man across from him. Suga huffed, pulling himself away from listening to Bokuto and Hinata's discussion to acknowledge Oikawa with pursed lips and a raised brow. Oikawa gave him a curt nod, mouthing 'good job' to him with a wink before turning his attention elsewhere after seeing Suga's answering nod and smirk.
On the drive back to the shared cabin, Oikawa couldn't help but proudly reminisce about all the strings pulled from behind the scenes - unbeknownst to Kuroo and their friends - and all the carefully directed and misdirected clues he planted with some help. Oikawa let out a chuckle, raising a hand to high five Daichi as the other man drove him, Kenma, and Hinata back. He turned in his seat to check in on Hinata, the poor redhead having his mouth dropped in shock since Oikawa started explaining everything.
"Was that too much too soon? Sorry Shoyo, I got a bit carried away when Kenma told me that you had figured it out. I was too excited to share this with you." Oikawa patted Hinata's knee sympathetically, watching as the other slowly wrapped his head around the new information he was given.
Hinata shook himself out of his stupor, glancing at his boyfriend to confirm the accuracy of what Oikawa had said. Kenma nodded, giving his distraught partner a reassuring smile. "It's true."
Nodding slowly, Hinata turned his attention to Daichi. "So...this whole time...you've known who Kuroo was dating? You've been a mole?"
Oikawa snorted. "Bit dramatic, Shoyo."
"I prefer calling it playing for both teams." Daichi smirked, chuckling when Hinata continued staring at him in disbelief. "What? I'm not as boring and straight laced as you think."
"It's true. The whole bet was his idea, actually." Kenma shrugged. "And it is almost to its completion, now we just need to get Kuro to - " He glanced at Oikawa, narrowing his eyes slightly " - admit that he is in a relationship. Without cheating."
"So don't say or do anything suspicious until then, okay, Shoyo? Just pretend you don't know any of this." Oikawa winked, ending the conversation by turning around in his seat to ignore the turmoil he caused inside Hinata's brain.
Hinata huffed, dropping his head onto Kenma's shoulder with a pout. "Would've been easier to do if I didn't know any of this."
Kenma sympathetically patted his hair and the car was quiet for the rest of the drive. They arrived back at the cabin not long after that, saying goodnight to everyone as they had stayed at the restaurant longer than originally planned.
Almost as soon as they all woke up they felt a shift in the mood, the difference from the day before even more noticeable when they were all gathered in the common room to collectively wake up before making breakfast. Nobody mentioned the anxious tension they all felt aloud in that moment, instead confirming it was a universal feeling with their eyes alone.
Iwaizumi went to take a seat on the couch, immediately standing back up when the couch yelped. "What the hell?"
The pile of blankets shifted and Kuroo emerged from the pile, rubbing his eyes. "Why did you sit on me?"
"Obviously, I didn't know you were in there." Iwaizumi huffed, rolling his eyes at his offended friend. "Why are you sleeping on the couch anyways?"
Kuroo yawned, stretching his arms high above his head before answering. "I couldn't sleep and didn't want to keep my roommates awake so I came out here. Didn't even realize I passed out til I was woken up by a face full of your ass."
"There are worse ways to wake up." Bokuto snickered, high fiving Oikawa.
"Like waking up next to one of you two?" Kuroo shocked even himself with the way he snapped at Bokuto, blinking in shock. He sighed, wrapping his blanket around his shoulders as he sat up in a tight ball, hugging his knees. "Sorry, didn't mean that."
The room stayed quiet after Oikawa and Bokuto accepted Kuroo's apology, everyone taking their usual places around the common room. Everyone except Kenma, who narrowed his eyes at Kuroo for a second before stomping over to him. When Kuroo looked up at him Kenma gestured for him to follow him out of the room, glaring harder when Kuroo shook his head.
"I'm telling, not asking. Up." Kenma didn't give up until Kuroo groaned and followed him out of the room, blankets still wrapped tightly around his shoulders.
Once the two best friends left the air felt a bit lighter but the inexplicable tension was still present and this time Atsumu decided to say something. "Okay, what's up with the mood?"
"I think we are all just exhausted after yesterday." Akaashi sighed, walking back into the common room with a cup of coffee for himself.
"Nah, it's more than that." Osamu backed his twin up, scanning the rest of their friends' expressions for any clues.
It was another few minutes of silence as everyone pondered what the twins were trying to imply, the only sound the muffled voices of Kuroo and Kenma down the hall.
Oikawa shrugged as best he could with his head in Bokuto's lap and his feet on Suga's. "I think you are looking for meaning where there isn't any."
"Agreed." Bokuto hummed, running his hands through Oikawa's hair. "But enough of that, what should we do today? And for the rest of the week for that matter, seeing as we only have a few more days left of this vacation."
Atsumu groaned. "No, I don't wanna think 'bout going back ta the real world!"
"Same, we need to make this a yearly thing." Iwaizumi chuckled.
Kenma and Kuroo walked back into the room, the latter shoving Oikawa over so he could be the little spoon still cocooned in his blanket. Suga huffed. "No, no, help yourself, really. I love getting my legs crushed."
"'Preciate you." Kuroo mumbled, completely hidden from the world by his blankets.
Bokuto pat Kuroo's head while Oikawa wrapped his arms around his waist, closing his eyes with a soft sigh. Their pillow looked up from the cuddling pair in his lap, addressing the room once more. "So, what is the plan for the rest of the vacation?"
Hinata eyed the couch with the four of them on it, glancing to the side at his pissed boyfriend. "The vibes feel weird today. Maybe we should just take it as a rest day? Do our own things?"
"Fine with that. Samu and I are gonna go into town for breakfast. Anyone wanna come?" Suna offered.
"I'll take you up on that offer." Iwaizumi and Bokuto both agreed, the latter chuckling when Oikawa and Kuroo both whined. "Big babies."
"I'll go with ya too. Ya comin', Kenma?" Atsumu raised a quizzical brow at his fellow blond, the shorter one shaking his head. "Okay, is yer boyfriend comin'?"
"Why don't you ask him yourself?" Kenma rolled his eyes. "Shoyo, if you want you can go. Not that you need my permission, this isn't the fifties."
Hinata nodded slowly, once more checking on his boyfriend before responding to Atsumu's indirect question. "I actually think I'm going to stay with Kenma. Thanks though."
"You know what? I'll go too." Suga announced, unceremoniously shoving the two weighted blankets off his body, snickering when they grumbled. "You should've seen that coming, honestly."
Kuroo took the blanket off his head, glaring at the culprit behind his sore elbows. "Doesn't mean we can't be annoyed about it."
Daichi snorted. "Regretting sleeping on the couch now, Mr. Grumpy Pants?"
The bed head turned his glare onto Daichi, snapping as he untangled himself from Oikawa while pulling himself to stand. "No, because unlike some people here I don't regret the commitments I make." He huffed, gathering the blankets in his arms. "I stick by my choices, for better or worse."
Kenma sighed, pulling himself away from where his head was resting on Hinata's shoulder. "Alright, Kuro, let's get you to sleep in an actual bed. Nobody wants to deal with your attitude."
"Seems to be the theme of this vacation." Kuroo hissed but still followed his friend out of the common room and down the hall towards their shared room.
They left behind an uncomfortable air in the common room, their friends eyeing each other for an explanation. Hinata looked to Bokuto for an answer but the human owl was too busy staring with scrutiny at someone else. The red head followed his line of sight, putting the pieces together for what was happening when he saw the scowl on his face.
Osamu cut the tension, standing up to grab his keys. "Right. Who's comin'?"
In the end the only ones to stay behind besides Kuroo, Kenma, and Hinata were Oikawa and Daichi, everyone else splitting up between the vehicles to head into town for food. They decided to make a day of it after finishing breakfast, exploring the area in small interchanging groups.
Eventually Oikawa, Daichi, and Hinata joined them, leaving the childhood friends behind in the cabin. When the final three participating in their day out on the town finally showed up they all regrouped to make a plan for the remaining five days of their vacation, finding a park to sit in with some snacks as they talked.
"We still haven't done a bonfire, maybe we can do that tonight?"
"No." Akaashi shot down Iwaizumi's suggestion immediately between bites of the ice cream Oikawa bought him. "That's something everyone should be involved in and I doubt Kenma or Kuroo-san will join us for one tonight. Not with the mood Kuroo-san is in."
"I wonder who's fault it is that Tetsu-chan is in such a bad mood." Oikawa snickered, licking ice cream off his spoon.
"Truly a mystery." Suga rolled his eyes, elbowing the still snickering Oikawa and making the brunet choke a little. His choking made both Akaashi and Suga smirk, the latter quickly getting back on topic for once. "Akaashi is right though, let's have a bonfire tomorrow night. Hopefully Kuroo will be in a better mood by then."
Everyone voiced their agreements, deciding to do a movie night once they got back instead of the bonfire. Once that was settled and they finished their snacks they split up to continue their exploration of the town, updating the others on the souvenirs they found in the groupchat.
A few hours later, just a bit after the sun had set, they all collectively decided to head back to the cabin, arriving to find Kenma on one of the couches with his Switch in hand, Kuroo's head in his lap, and two bowls with ice cream residue on the table next to them. Upon their return Kenma looked away from his Switch, shushing them while pointing down at Kuroo, the rest figuring out quickly that he was fast asleep.
Kenma nodded his chin at them, going back to his video game. "Welcome back."
Bokuto took the seat next to Kenma that wasn't occupied by the rest of Kuroo's lanky body, staring down at his sleeping friend. "His face is puffy and he looks like he has been crying."
"Yeah, well - " Kenma glanced away from his game again, eyes narrowing into a heated glare at the rest of the group, "- it's not uncommon to cry after getting your heart broken."
The tension from before their day trip returned, the friends awkwardly shuffling into the room after taking their shoes off. Oikawa coughed, picking up the TV remote with a grimace. "Maybe a funny movie will help Tetsu-chan feel better? Or at least get his mind off of this temporary setback?"
Kenma shrugged apathetically. "Hope you're right."
After everyone got settled in for the movie Oikawa picked out, they debated waking Kuroo up but ultimately decided against it when he let out a sigh and snuggled closer to Kenma, mumbling something incoherent in his sleep. So with Kuroo asleep and Kenma once more focused on his game they watched their movie in peace, calling it a night once the credits were rolling.
Kenma woke Kuroo up and sent him to sleep in their room as the others were cleaning up their messes of snack wrappers, blankets, and cups. As everyone was cleaning Kenma grabbed Oikawa's arm, hissing that he needed to talk to him before dragging the brunet outside, neither returning while the others were awake and in the common room.
Iwaizumi narrowed his eyes at the door to the cabin, trying his best to keep the hurt and betrayal off his face. Hinata saw the expression on Iwaizumi's face and remembered the investigation, sneaking up to Iwaizumi in the kitchen. "Don't worry, it's not what you think."
The other scoffed, dumping his handful of wrappers in the trash. "My best friend dated our mutual friend for years and has yet to tell me, even after they broke up. How could I not worry?"
Hinata sighed, leaving Iwaizumi to exit the room. He pulled out his phone and texted his boyfriend, informing him that they needed to fix this situation and fast, before their friend group imploded.
Luckily for the friends the tension seemed to have dissipated over night and they were able to have a calm and relaxing day with one another, once more playing the weird hybrid game of volleyball and chicken by the beach for the majority of the day. Once their exhaustion won the battle against their competitive spirits they called it a day when the sun was low in the sky, dragging their soaked selves out of the water to air dry on the towels Daichi remembered to bring out.
While rehydrating and recharging their energy levels they chatted amongst themselves, quickly realizing they did not in fact have any logs for the bonfire they were planning. Oikawa was quick to volunteer himself and Kuroo to make the trip into town to gather pre chopped firewood, tugging the other with him into the cabin to get dressed so they could carry out their mission.
It didn't take long for the pair to return with the firewood, the two of them walking in as Osamu and Suna plated the dinner they had made for everyone. Kuroo groaned when he saw the food, dropping himself into the chair between Kenma and Bokuto. "This looks delicious, thank you so much."
"Oh, no, don't worry about bringing the firewood out to the fire pit, Tetsu-chan. I got it all by myself." Oikawa grumbled, picking up the package of wood that Kuroo had dropped by his feet.
Kuroo blew the brunet a kiss. "Thanks, Oika'a! You're the best." He yelped when Kenma kicked him under the table. "What was that for?"
Kenma just glared at his friend, not responding and just returning to eating his meal. Kuroo blinked, looking to his other side for an answer from Bokuto. The human owl just shook his head, following Kenma's lead in not replying verbally.
Dinner went by without too much fanfare and once the dishes were cleaned and put away it was time to head out to the fire pit, Daichi and Iwaizumi not allowing anyone to help them get the fire started. They claimed the others could not be trusted to not shove someone in the fire out of spite, causing many to fake pout as they took up seats around the slowly growing fire.
Atsumu gasped, ignoring everyone as he dashed back into the cabin only to return a moment later with a few cases of beer. "Can't be a true bonfire without 'em."
"Too true." Bokuto nodded in thanks, accepting the beer the blond handed him.
Suga let out a giggle, drawing all eyes to him. "Sorry, it just for some reason feels like we are in a cliched high school movie where they have a forbidden bonfire party in the woods."
Kuroo snorted. "What I would give to see inside your mind."
Oikawa joined in on the chuckling. "Well, we could lean into the cliche and take it a step further with a game."
"Oh? What did you have in mind?" Suga matched the brunet's smirk, both their eyes twinkling with the promise of mischief.
With a wink Oikawa let the others in on his idea. "Why not start off with never have I ever? One of the most cliched party games."
"Take a swig if ya have done it as well as puttin' a finger down." Suna nodded. "Let's do it."
Osamu offered to start, tapping a finger against his chin while he thought. "Hm...oh! Never have I ever started a relationship with my friend."
Clearly thinking he was going to unearth the truth with his idea, Osamu was sorely disappointed when the only ones who did not take a swig were Atsumu, Iwaizumi, and Bokuto. Suna elbowed his boyfriend, grumbling about how he was playing the game wrong because he had started a relationship with his friend and the point was to say something you hadn't done.
"Now that that was cleared up, I'll go next." Daichi snickered. "Never have I ever hidden a relationship from my friends and made a bet about who would reveal it first."
Kuroo chuckled awkwardly after taking his sip. "This is a really specific topic we are doing, huh?"
"Got a problem with it, Tetsu-chan?" Oikawa challenged, taking a swig of his own. He lowered his bottle at the same time as Suga and Akaashi, burping quietly into his fist.
"Not at all, Oika'a." Kuroo smirked back. "Never have I ever used flirting with my friends as a way to make my partner jealous."
Kenma sighed as he watched Suga, Oikawa, Suna, and the twins take sips. "Kuro, you're playing wrong."
"Nuh uh, I don't flirt with my friends to make my partner jealous. In fact, my 'flirting' is all a joke he knows about and has approved of, so if my boyfriend gets jealous then that is his problem." Kuroo sniffed, elbowing Bokuto next to him. "Your turn, Bo."
"Never have I ever gotten straight A's."
"So that's what Intro to Chem meant..." Iwaizumi muttered, watching as the only two to drink were Akaashi and Kuroo. "Okay, my turn. Never have I ever lied to my best friend about something important."
Oikawa and Kenma were the only two to take a sip that time, earning the suspicious glares of their respective best friends.
"Care to share, Kenma?"
"You'll find out soon enough, Kuro." The blond huffed, momentarily glaring across the fire before muttering under his breath. "If he gets his shit together, that is."
Hinata's uncomfortable laughter covered Kenma's muttering, the red head drawing attention to himself before he continued the game, moving right on from any more potential tension or drama.
They continued on for several more hours, progressively getting more tipsy and borderline drunk the longer the game dragged on, their rounds getting more wild as the night grew darker and they all became more inebriated, their cases of beer dwindling down.
It was Atsumu who unintentionally stirred the pot, finding his turn hilarious. "Never have I ever kissed Kuroo."
"What the fuck?" Kuroo spluttered, heat rising in his cheeks as he gaped at Atsumu.
The blond was too busy watching a good portion of their friends take swigs, eyes widening when he realized that only Hinata, Iwaizumi, and himself didn't take a sip. "What the fuck?"
"Don't ask questions you don't want the answers to." Oikawa shrugged, taking a second sip of his beer. "I'm bored of this game, let's do something else."
"Way to change the subject." Iwaizumi grumbled but took the bait. "Alright, what did you have in mind?"
"Two truths and a lie." Akaashi suggested before Oikawa could speak, drunkenly barreling on without waiting for everyone's agreement. "I'll go first. I'm roommates with Kenma, the cabin is rented under my name, and I've been cheated on."
They all stopped and gaped at him for a moment before Bokuto stood up and stalked towards Akaashi, grabbing his arm and dragging him away from the fire, ignoring his friend's protests. "I'll be back, don't worry! 'Kaashi here has just had too much beer and needs to go to bed."
Once the pair were in the cabin Kenma let out a chuckle. "Alright, let's play Oikawa's game. I'll - "
"I'll go next." Kuroo interrupted, ignoring Kenma's glare. "I've been dating someone for three years, I was going to propose to him soon, and my plan was to use this vacation to tell all of you." He sniffled, taking a sip of his almost empty beer. "Oh wait, those were all true...except I think I am now single, so I guess a proposal isn't happening anytime soon."
For what felt like the umpteenth time that night the friends were stunned into silence, left staring in disbelief at one of their own. Daichi stood up from his spot across the bonfire, slowly approaching his drunk friend. "Kuroo - "
"Forget I said anything, clearly I'm drunk so I'm going to follow Bo's advice and go to bed. Hinata, I'm stealing your room so make the most of it. G'night." Kuroo stumbled away from the fire and the atmosphere his confession left behind, closing the cabin door after he entered, passing Bokuto on his way.
The human owl returned to the fire, looking around the group for an explanation. "So, uh, what'd I miss?"
Atsumu cleared his throat. "Uh, not entirely sure myself, Bokkun."
Oikawa sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Are we going to let those two put a damper on one of our last nights here or are we going to keep the party going?"
"Maybe we should give the games a rest and just enjoy the beautiful night, yeah?" Suga suggested, finishing off his last beer for the night while the others mumbled their agreements.
So they all sat around the fire for another hour or so just chatting with each other, slowly turning in for the night one by one as the fire went from a raging inferno to dwindling embers. Surprisingly Kenma and Hinata were the last ones at the fire, the couple kicking dirt and sand onto the growing pile of ash in order to put out the final stray embers. When they accomplished that task Kenma turned to his boyfriend to find Hinata smiling softly at him. "Don't worry Kenma, they'll work it out. Kuroo is going to be okay."
"He better be." Kenma mumbled, accepting the hug from Hinata. After a moment in the embrace he continued talking. "You know, I went ring shopping with both of them before this vacation."
Hinata gasped, pulling back from the hug. "You mean - "
"Yeah, those two are so in sync they were both going to propose at the same time. They even had similar plans; private proposals with just the two of them and then after the other accepted they were going to announce their engagement on the last day of the vacation." Kenma scoffed. "It was always a given that the other would accept, neither of them even entertaining the idea that they would be rejected. It was kind of disgusting, actually." The blond sighed, pulling Hinata back towards the cabin now that the fire was out. "And now? Now I'm not so sure."
They stayed silent as they entered the cabin, creeping into the room where Akaashi was passed out to slip into bed, both hoping the next day things would be a bit more positive.
Naturally, their hoping led to nothing as when the friends regrouped in the common room with minimal hangovers among them all hell broke loose after Bokuto read a text he received moments prior aloud to the group.
"'Bo - sorry for disappearing so early in the morning and without any notice. I promise I am safe, I just needed to take some space to clear my head. I'll be back by dinner tonight and if anyone asks where I am just tell them I had sudden business to take care of for work. Turning my phone off for a bit. See you at dinner.'"
Oikawa groaned, rubbing his eyes. "That idiot."
Daichi sighed, dropping onto the couch to mirror Oikawa's movements. "Do we have any idea where he might have gone?"
Iwaizumi shrugged. "Shouldn't we respect his need for space?"
"No." Kenma grunted, pulling out his phone. He paused to read something on it for a second before stomping across the room to shove his screen in his friend's face, murder in his eyes. "I trusted you with Kuro's heart and you fumbled. But since you are a good friend I am giving you one chance to fix this. Now is the only time you are going to have to do it and if you don't you will rightfully lose Kuro. Forever. Got it?"
Atsumu gasped, slapping his twin's bicep with an inappropriate amount of excitement given the circumstances. "Holy shit! It's him! Kuroo's boyfriend...this whole time its been - "
