Kenma
With a new target acquired the Investigative Team adjourned for the evening, resuming their casual activities as they waited for the trio to return from their shopping trip. Currently they were all spread out through the common rooms doing their own things. Hinata and Kenma were huddled up on the floor by an outlet to charge the Switches they were playing with while Bokuto and Iwaizumi arm wrestled at the table next to them, the twins and Daichi watching and placing bets on who would win. Suna was sprawled on one of the couches while watching videos on his phone and Akaashi was on the other couch with a notebook on his lap, seemingly taking notes on whatever he was reading on his phone.
Their peace was disturbed when the door to the cabin flung open and Oikawa walked in with a shopping bag in one hand and a latte in the other, chatting animatedly with Suga and Kuroo, who were carrying the bulk of their purchases. The trio stopped in the middle of the common area to deposit their bags on the floor, Suga raising an expectant eyebrow at the room's occupants. They stared innocently back at him.
Rolling his eyes as he crouched and reached into one of the bags, pulling out a bottle of shampoo to hurl at his chosen victim. "We were kind enough to do the shopping, you lazy bums can at least help us put everything away."
Suna grunted when the shampoo hit his thigh, looking away from his phone to glare at Suga. "Why is it always me?"
Suga smiled, giving an apathetic shrug. Suna sighed, slipping his phone into his pocket as he got off the couch with the shampoo in hand. Seeing Suna relent to helping inspired the others to do the same, all of them pausing their activities to lend a hand.
With all of them helping it took barely any time at all to unload the groceries and soon enough they once more found themselves returning to their previous spots around the room, joined this time by Oikawa, Suga, and Kuroo, who occupied the couches with Akaashi and Suna. Oikawa sat next to Akaashi, glancing at the other when he tried to subtly close his notebook, eyes widening when he got a glimpse of what was written on the pages. He caught Akaashi's narrowed gaze before turning his eyes to the other side of the room, a smirk forming on his lips.
"Oik - "
"Akaashi! How scandalous!" Oikawa gasped, covering his mouth in mock shock as all eyes turned to him.
"What are you going on about now, Shittykawa?" Iwaizumi grunted, still in the middle of a match with Bokuto across the room from his childhood friend.
Akaashi abruptly stood up and exited the room with his notebook and phone in hand, face pinched. Oikawa sniffed dramatically, moving the hand on his mouth to his forehead. "Our dear Akaashi was - in the same room as us too! - describing a rather intimate scenario between Kenma and - "
"Oikawa, maybe we shouldn't know what Akaashi writes in his notebooks. Afterall, it seems rather personal and maybe something he wants to keep private ." Hinata spoke up, glancing quickly at the gamer to his side, whose shoulders had tensed up at the mention of his name.
"Hinata is right, Oikawa-san. I would appreciate it if you would refrain from snooping in my notebooks. And I'm sure Kenma would as well." Akaashi announced his return - this time without his notebook - and took his spot on the couch next to Oikawa.
"Now that everyone is reminded of the importance of privacy , what is the game plan for this evening?" Kuroo spoke up from where he was sandwiched between Suna and Suga, the latter using his lap as a pillow with his legs thrown over the arm of the couch.
The group paused to contemplate their options, Osamu being the one to suggest a lowkey game night. Nice, simple, and easy, right?
But, seeing how it was this particular group of friends participating in the game night, nothing could be sane or easy. Everything needed a borderline unhealthy amount of drama and stakes involved. That being said, it was only natural for Atsumu to suggest that the reward for winning their tournaments would be the option to find out what exactly Oikawa had seen in Akaashi's notebook. He didn't offer that as a reward purely because of the investigation, Atsumu was a naturally curious and nosey person and needed to know what had caused Oikawa to react like that and if it was an actually warranted response.
All eyes once more turned to Oikawa and Akaashi, Oikawa looking slightly guilty before smoothing his features. Akaashi sighed, glancing across the room at Kenma for a verdict. Kenma paused his game and slipped his Switch into his hoodie pocket, standing to approach the duo. He stopped in front of Oikawa, studying his face coolly. "You better hope you win, Oikawa. I don't really care if they all find out but if you don't beat everyone then I will be forced to take revenge."
"That doesn't really make sense, Kenma." Kuroo lifted his hands in a placating motion when the blond turned his glare to him. "You know me, I'm just stating facts, I'm not objecting to the drama."
Oikawa scoffed, meeting Kenma's gaze head on when he returned his attention to the brunet once more. "I accept these conditions, but you have nothing on me."
"Intro to chemistry."
"You have one thing on me." Oikawa still stuck his hand out to shake with Kenma, both ignoring Suna's comment that it seemed to always be Oikawa shaking hands and striking up competitions. "Good luck, Ken-chan."
"And may the odds be ever in your favor." Bokuto snickered, finding his quote hilarious. "I'm rereading that series. It's crazy how much more you notice when you go back and look for the little foreshadowing details."
"I'm so proud of you, Bo. You've been meaning to read those books for a while and I'm glad you've managed to find some time to do so." Kuroo grinned at his friend, pushing Suga off his lap so that he could gather the games they brought along for the trip, both digital and physical alike. "So what are we going to play first?"
The friends started a debate on whether to start with the video games or move onto the video games after a couple of board and card games. Ultimately it was decided to save the video games for later and so they all gathered around the table, moving their discussion onto what game to start with. It came down to either Hot Seat or Stir the Pot, both impulse purchases made by Osamu when he was shopping with Suna before the trip. They all took turns reading the description on the boxes before voting on the winning game, Hot Seat. Atsumu grabbed them all pens to write with, handing them out as it was decided that Hinata would be the first person in the hot seat.
"So I pick a card and read it out loud? And then everyone - even me - has to write an answer?"
"Yeah and then we all have to vote on which answer is yours. Whoever votes correctly gets a point and whoever's answer gets voted on also gets points. If someone writes the same answer as you, the round is over and they automatically get points." Daichi explained, watching as Hinata picked a card.
The redhead read the card aloud and everyone pondered for a moment before they wrote their answers and gave them to Hinata, thus starting a very intense and mildly offensive game.
"'What is something I secretly don't like that would surprise people?' Oh, no." Kuroo groaned, watching in fear as everyone at the table immediately began writing. He sighed but complied, writing his own answer while waiting for everyone else to hand him theirs. He flipped them over to check if anyone had the same answer as him, shocked laughter escaping his throat. "You guys suck! 'Breathing', 'volleyball', 'Kenma', 'Oikawa', 'being alive', 'us', damn. I guess I am a depressed suicidal bastard who doesn't even like his friends. The right answer was 'coffee', jerks."
"You are supposed to let us vote, Kuroo-san." Akaashi sighed, gathering the used papers to throw out later as Kuroo mumbled an insincere apology.
The game continued and the friends continued to mock each other, feeding to the competitive tension and annoyance that had begun to grow among them.
"Can I skip this question?" Kenma grunted, frowning at the card in his hand when he got a unanimous denial. "Fine. 'What fetish would I be interested in trying if only I wasn't too afraid to ask my partner?'" Kenma scowled when pens immediately hit paper, begrudgingly writing his own response. The blond glared at the gathered responses in his hands, occasionally lifting his gaze to stare at the suspected culprit of an answer. He sighed when he read the last paper. "Someone matched me."
"I freaking knew it!" Kuroo cheered.
"How do you know you're the one that matched with Kenma?" Suga grunted, still annoyed from the responses he got for his card.
"Kenma and I have no secrets." Kuroo smirked proudly. "Right, Kenma?"
The look on Kenma's face made it seem as if answering Kuroo physically pained him. "You did match my answer, but that's it." Kuroo gasped, making a face of faux hurt and betrayal. It was Kenma's turn to smirk. "I know something you don't know."
Atsumu cleared his throat. "What was the answer?"
"Irrelevant." The childhood friends answered at the same time, narrowed and suspicious stares never leaving the other.
After a moment of observing the stare down Iwaizumi grunted, reaching to grab his card as it was his turn next. And just like that the game continued on, everyone giving the duo not so subtle inquisitive glances, none of them taking notice that one gaze wasn't just inquisitive.
They continued with the same game until a particularly snide answer caused an argument to erupt between Suga and Daichi, Osamu stepping in to suggest they move on to a different game. Hinata spoke up to announce he was hungry, leading to the executive decision that they would have a food break before returning to game night for the video game portion.
With the pause in their gaming decided, the designated roommates for dinner stood up to start cooking, only halting in their tracks when Bokuto scrambled from his seat to ask Kuroo if he could swap with him for the cooking. Standing in the threshold between the kitchen and the rest of the common area Kuroo arched a brow at his friend. Bokuto shuffled his feet awkwardly, uncharacteristically timid.
Understanding that his friend had a reason to request the switch that he felt uncomfortable announcing Kuroo agreed with a dramatic sigh and a return to his seat. "Sure, go nuts, Bo. Remember to actually cook during your gossip session this time."
Bokuto let out an offended squawk as he followed Kenma and Akaashi into the kitchen, Kenma muttering that it was one time he forgot to turn the stove on and Kuroo should really just get over it already.
Iwaizumi shook his head in disbelief at Kuroo. "You were our only hope of actually getting edible food and now you have doomed us all."
Kuroo shrugged, unapologetic. "Kenma and Bo may be incredibly hopeless when it comes to cooking but Akaashi is surprisingly pretty decent."
"If he doesn't eat it all before serving it." Hinata grumbled, still bitter about the time he was three minutes late to making it to the table, arriving to find his food in the middle of being consumed by an unfazed Akaashi.
In the kitchen Bokuto slid up next to his co-cooks, glancing over his shoulder before mumbling to Akaashi and Kenma. "I liked it better when I wasn't directly involved in this little game."
"Just keep your head down and your mouth quiet and you'll be fine. The finish line is in sight." Kenma muttered back, reaching into a cabinet to retrieve a pan. "Kuro is going to spill the beans first and you'll win the bet, so your silence will be worth it."
"Kenma is right, Bokuto-san. We only have a couple more days of vacation left, the stress will be gone quicker than you know." Akaashi hummed, rummaging through the fridge. He handed Bokuto some ingredients as they continued to chat. "You know how important their privacy is to them and how competitive they are. Let things play out naturally and everyone will end up happy."
"I just don't get why they weren't up front with everyone to begin with. None of the others are going to care."
"You know Kuro, mind games are a hobby of his."
Bokuto let out a pained little whine. "They should just tell everyone already."
Akaashi chuckled, smirking at his longtime friend. "Now where's the fun in that?"
While Bokuto was cracking under the pressure of keeping his friends' secret and Akaashi and Kenma were making their dinner for them the rest of the friends cleared off the table, neatly putting the games away before grabbing the plates, cups, and cutlery for their meal. They started to work out which video game they would start their marathon with, deciding to leave the final decision up to the cooking trio as to whether it would be Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros.
After what felt like an eternity to a starving Hinata their food was finally put on the table, the red head almost weeping for joy. Iwaizumi posed the question to the three as they dug into their meals and it was determined that they would start with Smash and move on to Mario Kart when things inevitably got too violent.
"Did Oikawa win the cards?" Atsumu directed his question at Kenma, his fellow blond pondering his response for a moment. "Oh, come on! Can't be that hard!"
Begrudgingly, Kenma nodded. "He got the most points, so he won fair and square."
"Ha! Intro to chemistry is going to stay between us!" Oikawa stuck his tongue out triumphantly.
"You forget, Oika'a, video games are up next. You know, Kenma's life. You might be celebrating a bit too early." Kuroo grinned innocently, yelping when Akaashi pinched his thigh and reprimanded him for stirring the pot. "Don't give me that, you're just as bloodthirsty as I am when it comes to drama."
"Most of you are." Iwaizumi grunted, shaking his head in mock disapproval. "That's why we got banned from all of the libraries on campus. Just couldn't stay out of things."
"If I recall correctly, Iwa-chan, you started one of those altercations." Oikawa hummed, shrugging when his friend glared at him.
"He's about to start one now, too." Suga grinned, eyes full of excitement at the prospect of more in fighting.
"No, he isn't. We are being the mature adults we are supposed to be and are going to settle our beef like so...by beating the crap out of each other in a battle royale video game." Daichi stood and gathered his cup, plate, and utensils to bring to the kitchen. "Last one to finish dinner has to have character selection set to random every round."
"Ah hell no!"
The friends scrambled to finish their food, shoving and tripping each other on their quest to not be the unfortunate soul stuck without a choice of fighter. They cast pitying glances at the unfortunate soul - Suna - as they settled in to start the carnage.
The rounds started off slowly, almost everyone's bloodlust satiated by the meal they just ate. Everyone except for Oikawa's and Kenma's, the two of them attacking the others relentlessly and without mercy. This offense against their characters and their pride, naturally, fired the rest of them up and thus began the real fighting.
Not all of it in game either.
"Samu, ya piece of shit! We're on the same side!"
"Daichi, move! Your big head is in the way!"
"What was that? I couldn't hear anything over the sound of me kicking your ass."
"Which one is Kenma again? Guys, which character is Kenma? I do not want to be sneak attacked again."
"Oika'a, I swear if you don't stop kicking me -"
"I'm in love with Kenma!"
The battle ended with stunned silence when the timer stopped, almost everyone turned to gape at Hinata, his face on fire. Nobody said anything for a couple of drawn out moments, flickering their attention between the red head and the blond who he declared his love for.
Kenma sighed, smiling softly at Hinata as his own cheeks flushed. "Shoyo, is this because of what Oikawa saw earlier?"
"Yes - no - kind of! I just didn't want them to find out about us like that. Sorry! I know you didn't want to tell - "
"Shoyo, it's not that I didn't want to tell them. I just didn't see the point. It's kind of their own fault if they can't see the obvious, really." Kenma turned away from his boyfriend, addressing their audience. "Shoyo and I have been dating for awhile now, in case you still didn't figure it out."
"We're happy for you guys." Iwaizumi pat Hinata on the back, understanding his earlier protests when Kenma was suggested as the next suspect.
"Hm, but I wonder if anyone else in the group is in a relationship we don't all know about. Anyone want to confess to a secret love affair?" Suga smirked, not so subtly eyeing Kuroo.
Kuroo held his gaze, a smirk of his own on his lips. "It wouldn't be very secret if everyone knew, now would it?" He shifted his stare to the rest of the friends. " I don't have anything to say, but perhaps someone else here may want to speak up? Oika'a? Akaashi? Tsumu? Suga, you were the one to suggest it, maybe you were trying to divert attention from yourself?"
"Not entirely sure what is happening here but I don't like the vibes. Let's just move on to Mario Kart, yeah?" Daichi suggested, successfully refocusing everyone back onto their game night.
It wasn't until hours later when they were wrapping up their gaming marathon that Atsumu remembered Akaashi's notebook. "Wait! What was in the book?"
Oikawa glanced between Akaashi and Kenma, sighing. "I think enough juicy details about our friends have been revealed tonight. Besides, some things are nice to be kept a secret."
With that they all took turns getting ready to go to bed, the Investigative Team once more making plans to sneak out and discuss. When they were all gathered in the common room, Hinata took the initiative. "Clearly Kenma isn't Kuroo's boyfriend, seeing as he is mine."
Kenma choked on air, glaring at a snickering Akaashi. "You thought I was dating Kuro? No, I'm not stupid enough to subject myself to that."
"And yet you are dating Hinata. No offense, Hinata." Akaashi nodded in apology at the offended redhead. "So the suspects are narrowed to Sugawara-san and Oikawa-san and there is a week left of this vacation."
"I think we should focus next on the one who will be easier to disqualify due to weak evidence. Suga." Daichi coughed. "To be fair, he and Kuroo are both competitive enough to distance themselves in front of others if they made a bet to see who would reveal their relationship first."
"But wouldn't Suga tell you if he was dating Kuroo? I mean you guys are really close."
"Not if it meant he would lose, no."
"And going by that thought, shouldn't you know too? Seeing as you are dating Kuroo's best friend and all." Iwaizumi narrowed his eyes at Hinata, getting frustrated that they may not figure the mystery out before the end of the week.
"Yeah! Surely, ya must've noticed who he spends time with. He and yer boyfriend are super close, after all."
"Think, Hinata, think! Ya can solve this for us right here!"
Hinata closed his eyes against all the pressuring stares to focus, going back through all his dates and time spent with Kenma when Kuroo was also there. One face stuck out the most, reappearing a suspicious amount. He gasped, eyes flying open. "Oh, my gosh! I know who the boyfriend is!"
"Yes! Knew ya could do it."
"Who is it?" Suna leaned forward, ready to put this whole thing to rest.
"Its - "
"- still against the rules to ask those who already know. Same thing applies to Shoyo as it does to myself, Akaashi, and Bokuto. You need to put in the work and figure it out." Kenma glared.
"But - "
"You have seven days to find the truth and no cheating." Akaashi stood up with a stretch, stifling a yawn. "Good luck."
Those left in the common room after Hinata and Kenma also left exchanged one last determined glance, renewing their resolve.
Seven days.
One week.
One boyfriend.
They could figure it out...couldn't they?
