Chapter 36 Seraph
After some debate we had decided to take the day to figure out how exactly we were going to break the news to Tony and tell him after school. Well after school is today, like right now. Raphael had the job of convincing Tony to come with us after school. I don't know what he did, I just know it obviously worked because Tony is currently following us to Grey's and my safe house.
When we enter, Tony is first. Raphael follows after a half second of hesitation. By the time I enter they have both fully taken in the room.
"It's a little scarce. Not what I expected," Tony says carefully.
I look around the room and back towards him. "I didn't bring you here to judge my interior decorating. And honestly how would you know what to expect? You hardly know me." I can tell Raphael is trying not to laugh. I elbow him in the ribs. He glances at me and rolls his eyes with a shrug. I can't wait to get this over with.
"If you didn't invite me over to hang out, then why are we here?" Tony questions, walking over to perch on the edge of the arm of the couch. He crosses his arms and looks between us.
I fidget nervously and glance between the two guys in the room. It's fairly obvious I'm uncomfortable with the situation. Of course that is just gold for Raphael so we decides to milk it.
"Yeah Seraph, why are we here?" He lazily leans against the wall and smirks at me. I glare at him, frustrated. This was his idea after all, even if I did agree to it. "What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?" Raphael taunts.
I huff, "What do you want me to say?!"
Raphael just smirks. He's enjoying this way too much for my liking. "I take it you want to tell me something?" Tony asks, turning my attention back to him.
"Um . . . Yeah, that would just about sum it up." I respond nervously.
"Well," Tony starts, "what is it?"
"Yeah Angel, just spit it out already," Raphael teases.
"I'm an angel!" I blurt out without thinking. "I'm a Guardian Angel and you," I point accusingly at Raphael, "you are basically filthy demon!"
"Who are you calling 'filthy'?" Raphael interjects, obviously offended. Good, now he knows how I feel. I turn my head to squint a glare at him. Basically forgetting that I just shouted my true identity to Tony and I really wasn't supposed to.
"Alright, nice joke guys. I knew you hated each other but that's a little much. Can I go now?" Tony brings our attention back to him. His face doesn't betray any emotion. And his tone of voice was just as bland. He probably really did believe it was a joke. So I'm not in trouble, yet.
"Wish you could go, but you can't. Sorry Tony, but I'm afraid this isn't a joke." Raphael takes over, and is surprisingly serious. "She's telling the truth. She's your Guardian Angel, as in from Heaven. Yeah they exist. And me? I'm from the other place. Technically still an angel, just not the friendly kind."
Tony raises an eyebrow. "Uh huh, yeah. I have to admit, this is some pretty elaborate prank guys."
I sigh, I knew it was going to be hard, but does it really have to be this hard? "What is it going to take to believe us?"
Tony looks at me, "You're serious?" When I don't answer he sighs, "Fine, if you're an angel, where're your wings? Your halo?"
"Yeah Angel, where are your wings?" Raphael smirks.
"You know where! I can't show him mine, and you know why! So you're up for show and tell," I point to Raphael angrily.
"Fine," Raphael says. "I guess you were just looking for a reason for me to take my shirt off. You know you could've just asked." I huff in response and stomp over to the nearest chair. Raphael starts to take off his shirt silently. Though I try and avert my eyes I still catch the many scars and faint tattoos that cover most of his tanned skin. In fact it is hard to tell where the scars stop and his actual skin is. I recognize the most recent ones from his fight with Scarlet. I don't comment on it, neither does Tony. And the way Raphael doesn't seem to notice tells me he's become very comfortable with his scars.
After his shirt is off he rolls his shoulders a few times. And I watch as slowly his wings emerge from his back. They aren't a nice light color with perfect feathers and a slight sparkle. No, his wings were dark, a dark smoky grey. His feathers were warped and misshapen, some even looked to be burned and clipped or torn. His wings were big too, each at least as long as he was tall, and then some. They fit him perfectly.
"Is this convincing enough for you?" Raphael asks Tony.
I look at Tony who is rendered momentarily speechless. But shortly after he recovers. "Alright, I'll buy that. That covers you, not her." I sigh.
"I can't show you my wings." I tell him dejectedly.
"And why not?"
I sigh and look at Raphael for help. Of course, he doesn't offer any. "Your people, your rules. I don't have the same restrictions. This one's all yours."
I sigh again, frustrated. "I just can't Tony. It's hard to explain and not really important right now." I say in the hopes that he'll just let it go right now.
"Fine, if you can't show me your wings, what about your halo?" Tony's tone shows he's looking for a hole to poke in our declaration.
"Halos aren't what you think they are." I start to explain with a laugh, "We don't wear them on our heads like some sort of silly crown. They're rings usually. To help us harness our magic."
"Well that's convenient." Tony mutters. I try not to laugh.
"Hey Angel, why can't you show him your wings?" Raphael asks suddenly.
"What?" I ask, "We literally just went over this!"
"No, not those wings. Your markings," Raphael points out with an eye roll.
"Again, that's not going to happen," I say, tugging my jacket a little.
"Halo, your shirt is thin enough he can see them. Stop being a sensitive little baby and take the jacket off." I can't believe he's talking to me like an annoyed parent. I'm not a child. I glare at him, showing my feelings on the matter quite clearly.
"What's he talking about?" Tony inquires.
I huff, "Nothing!" And tug at my jacket again.
Raphael grabs my sleeve roughly and starts tugging at my jacket to get it off. I didn't even notice him move towards me. After much, though not that much, struggling between the two of us he finally gets my jacket off.
"Hey!" I shout and lurch forward to try and get it back. But Raphael is quick and tosses it over his shoulder. His hands grip my upper arms as I struggle to get around him and he holds me still. I hear a gasp behind me and realize Tony must have come closer and can now see my golden wings through my thin white shirt.
"Good enough for you?" Raphael says over my shoulder. Tony must have nodded because I don't hear a response before Raphael releases me. "Good, we have some explaining to do kid, you might want to sit down."
