Chapter 2: Trouble in the Forest

After a while of running Opal and Quartz caught up to Holly. She had skidded to a stop and was standing in front of a deep green forest. Jade Forest. She turned to the duo.
"You think that the scream came from in there?" She asked now shivering slightly. Opal shuddered.
"Maybe. But we are not going in there," Opal said, "anything could creep up on us in there."
"Yeah," Quartz agreed nodding, "this is as far as I go."
Opal turned to tell Holly to go back to find that she had disappeared.
"Holly!" Yelled Quartz as she spotted the tip of her pale blue and white gem at the end of her tail disappear into the dark green bushes near them.
"Holly!" Quartz yelled again. But Holly didn't come out. It was dead silent.
"Oh no," sighed Opal, "do we have to go in after her?"
"I'm afraid so." Said Quartz. Opal groaned and hung her head, as Quartz was slowly walking toward the bushes where Holly had disappeared. Opal reluctantly followed Quartz into the dark green foliage, in pursuit of her group mate. The forest was dark and forbidding, and the soil underneath their claws was damp and undisturbed. The trees were gigantic, looming over the two dragonets, little tiny rays of sunlight peeking through the gaps in the branches.
"Holly!" Opal called, her voice echoing through the forest, drawing the attention of a large black tree cat. It opened its eyes and peered at the two dragonets that walked by, wondering why two small dragons where in the forest where anything could get them. Quartz held up her talon to keep her quiet as they walked by the tree the cat was in. The cat flicked its tail and layed it head back on its paws and dosed off again. The duo walked through a thick bramble bush the thorns pricking at their scales. Quartz shuddered as she walked by a thin brown snake, it's little reptilian yellow eyes staring back at her. Opal eyed it, but it didn't make a move toward them. She sighed as they continued walking. Soon they came upon a tree that was darker and smaller than the other trees. Opal looked up and saw that the leaves had blackened and withered off of it. The entire tree looked bare and lifeless. The bark was a dark grey and looked dead. She slowly circled the tree to look for what had caused this and saw five deep scratches along the opposite side if the tree. The patch around these scratches were black and the centre of them glowed a bright purple.
"Hey Quartz, come look at this!" Opal called. Quartz ran over and looked at the tree.
"Oh wow," she said, "what could have done this?"
Opal went to rip off some bark and saw some pink glowing slime on the other side of it. It looked like poison.
"Opal stop!" Said Quartz suddenly, "I think its poison."
She looked down and almost fainted. Opal followed her gaze. Her eyes widened as she saw four red splotches of blood, each glinted in the sunlight. The iron tang of the smell hit her nostrils and in that instant she knew it was fresh.
"This must have just happened—" She started. Opal looked around and saw a trail of blood leading to the nearest strawberry bush. The bright green leaves swayed in the soft breeze as if nothing was wrong. Opal and Quartz slowly approached the bush, the smell of strawberries calmed them a little. Opal reached out with shaking talons, and parted the branches. Her eyes widened and a small tear leaked from one eye. In the bush, lying motionless in a pool of blood was her hunting lessoner, Larimar.

Sorry for the small chapter peoples, I hope I can make it up in the next chapter.
