Chapter 1
One year later....
"Amity! STOP!" Mightysight yelled, hitting her sister with a wing.
"Three moons, fun-snubber. Can't you leave that amethyst alone for one millisecond and actually do something?" Amity laughed, poking Mightysight.
"You're gonna make me mess up!" Mightysight said. Tiny metal picks lay strewn on the wooden desk, each fit for the scrupulous work of carving out jewels.
"You do realize this isn't due for three days, right?" Amity said. Mightysight squinted her eyes.
"I see Mother and Father...yelling...oh." Mightysight ended abruptly, making her sister jump.
"Oh what?" Amity said, now nervous.
"I mean oh as in oh no I see Queen Avenger in our future." Mightysight retorted. Amity's eyes widened, then narrowed.
"And I mean oh as in oh you little liar." Amity said, thwacking her tail against her sister. Mightysight roared. A plume of fire escaped her mouth, singeing the flame-scarred table.
"Girls!" Their mother called. "Don't set the room on fire!"
While Mightysight was caught off-guard, Amity lunged for the little gem. She closed her talons around it and slipped it under the rug in the room.
"Mightysight, come on! Let's go flying or something." Amity groaned, tugging on her sister's wing.
"But it's almost sunrise!" Mightysight protested. Amity pulled some more.
"Come onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!"
Mightysight rolled her eyes. "Fine, but-"
"But nothing! We've an hour until sunrise, no time for complaining. Besides, school starts in a week and we need to have as much fun as possible NOW!" Amity interrupted, practically dragging her sister though the doorway.
They crossed through their small home, exiting out through a moonlit hole in the roof.
The open air was empty but full. Mightysight gazed down at the crawling kingdom, now going to sleep as the light started to sneak over NightWing home.
Mightysight crossed under her sister and watched the horizon.
"Wow, the sunrise is beautiful." Amity breathed.
"Wow..." Mightysight echoed. Then a sharp bolt of pain clutched her head. Her wings faltered and she fell a few feet.
Visions crowded in her head.
A SandWing, pale and glittering, with his wing around her.
Several dragonets dancing in the moonlight.
Mightysight standing over a NightWing, tears streaming down her face.
Mightysight stepping over the littered field of corpses, looking for someone.
The amethyst locket.
"Whoa there," Amity said, swooping underneath her sister, brushing wingtips. "Vision?"
Mightysight caught herself in the air. "Yeah-but it didn't really make sense-" she snorted a laugh, "Not like the other ones ever do either."
Amity chuckled. "Who's the SandWing?"
Mightysight faltered. "Amity! I told you to stay out!"
"Yeah, but it's not like you'd tell me anything if I didn't." Amity responded.
Mightysight rolled her eyes and flipped in the air. They were flying well over the Night Kingdom now.
The land was gouged like claws run through the ground. Canyons miles wide crawled with dragons. Homes were carved into stone, gardens dangled from hooks.
Queen Avenger's palace spiraled up into the clouds, black and glittering. A few night-colored dragons flew in and out, but mostly the palace was asleep.
They flew past the palace, now outskirting the main NightWing city. A few homes scattered the grassy hills.
"Hey," Amity said after a while of silence, "What's that?"
She angled her tail towards a growing amass of tan and sand.
"Are those...SandWings?" Mightysight asked. An entire wing of sand dragons approached the Night Kingdom, growing larger and larger in the rising sun.
"So, uh... what do we do?" Amity asked Mightysight. "Stay..or run?"
