Rain looked down at her scroll and winced. I got that one wrong? How? It's just a stupid fish!
Ray peered over her shoulder. "Oh, Rain....".
She glared at her older sister. "I get it! I'm stupid!".
She blinked at her. "No, no! You are not stupid. You...you just get use some studying".
"But I do study!". She couldn't help that her voice was high and strained.
Her sister flicked her tail to the open scroll about FlickerWings. "You need to get your head out of the clouds and focus on things our tribe actually cares about".
Rain widened her eyes. "What?".
Ray blinked again. "Oh, I'm so sorry. You know how I get sometimes....Just randomly mad". She opened her mouth again and then closed it.
"You got it from Mom"She whispered after a moment.
Ray shot her a weird look. "Right, let's get back home...".
Rain sighed and nodded. Ever since their Mother had disappeared a year ago, it was still hard to talk about her.
Ray placed her wing on Rain's shoulder and herded her outside.
Their hut was on the opposite side of town. I wonder where she is, if she's still....alive, She thought as they made their way across town.
Finally, they reached their small hut.
Ray nudged the door open. "Dad! We're home!".
Their Dad appeared instantly. "Oh, great! Did you have a fun time...studying?".
"Yeah, Rain did great!" Ray said through clenched teeth.
"Oh, that's good to hear" Their father said, backing up so they could slip into the dark room.
"Also, Rain, you have a visitor! He's waiting for you in your room"He added, winking.
UGHHHHH! Reef?! Again?!
"Thanks for letting me know"She said instead.
Ray have her a sorry look and turned and walked down the hall towards her room.
Rain sighed and slipped into the doorway that led into her room.
Reef was sitting the middle of the room, staring pointedly down at his talons. He jumped up when he saw her. "Great! Your back! How was studying?".
Rain shrugged. "I don't know...Same as always".
Reef looked up. "Excuse me, don't mumble!".
Rain sighed. "Right, sorry. Studying was great".
Reef nodded and took a step towards her. She immediately shrank back and he gave a disgusted snort. "I think it's time we talked to your father about school".
"What about my school?".
He gave her a blank stare. "You have to drop out at some point. You'll get more time with me and our dragonets. Well, of course, when you have them".
Rain coiled her tail around herself protectively. "I-...Uh...I have to drop out of school?".
Reef nodded and trailed his talons down her neck. "It's for the best. No more studying and more me".
Rain nodded blankly. "Yes.....".
Reef smiled. "Good girl". He walked to the door and turned to look at her one last time. "I'll be back soon. Stay here".
He shut the door and instantly, it was much darker.
