It developed over a long time from a cumulation of things - pressure as the tribe's only animus, continual torment over his powers, fear of losing his soul and the little affair with Thorn.

Sunny knows this and tries her best to help him. His mental health slowly improves with her help (and many of the Jade Mountain students - he acts like they're annoying but secretly loves them all).
