CHAPTER TEN
Whitedust stared at him and blinked.
She was astonished. She didn't know what to do or say or think or anything; she just sat there, immobile.
"Well?" Windchaser questioned. His mind wondering what would happen. Images he thought of flashed in Whitedust's mind: she flirted back, smiling at him and leaned in closer, then to where she pushed him back and began yelling at him (which was where she was leaning to do), to actually fighting him (wait scratch that, that last part was very unlikely).
"Well what?" Whitedust questioned. She wasn't entirely sure what she was supposed to do, and she didn't want to do what he wanted. This dragon just told her his name and that's it. She felt as though she was being harassed in this situation right about now.
I expected a better reply from that, Windchaser thought. "Sorry, I usually don't get a response like that. It's usually, 'wow you're gorgeous', or 'dang you're pretty intimidating'!" Windchaser smirked and squinted his eyes as his head began to advance closer towards hers - his mind then began wondering how she'd react to that. During this time as he was distracting her, his talon began reaching for her scroll, which was tucked between her wings on her back. She's pretty and all but I've seen better looking dragons... hm. Well, the more I look at her, the more my eyes tell me she isn't pretty haha. She's nice for a hybrid but she sure is awkward.. Almost... got it....
Whitedust backed up immediately and slapped his talon with hers, holding on to his wrist. "How dare you!" She yelled. "You're nothing but a-" she stopped speaking. The talon that she had grabbed had one too many toes on it.
Six claws. Whitedust's eyes widened.
That's what Scroll warned her about. A dark blue and gray dragon - a NightWing - and how he might be dangerous. Didn't Scroll say to never approach him? Well that's out of the question now, isn't it. Whitedust looked up into his eyes and realized that they were red and yellow. He stared at her furious.
Windchaser growled and bared his teeth at her. "But a what? Why don't you go and finish that sentence for me?" He pulled his arm from her grasp and backed up spreading his wings, showing how intimidating he might seem. Do your worst.
"A thief!" Whitedust scoffed. She didn't know what else to say to him without him hurting or threatening her. A creep? There were plenty of words she could think of to describe him considering how he acted not two minutes ago.
There's nothing I can say in this situation... I really am lost for words, and there's nothing I can do but attack now. Well little odd dragon, you asked for this. Windchaser leaped off his feet in the direction of Whitedust.
Whitedust yelped and tried to get out of his reaching grasp by ducking and rolling. She of course, failed, because she'd never fought a dragon before in her life; Windchaser grabbed her right horn and swung her head to the ground, twisting her neck in an awkward way.
He was above her now reaching for her scroll at this point, but Whitedust turned her head just enough to attack him. She opened her mouth and released her frostbreath. The frost hit his arm before he could reach it and his mind screamed.
Three moons! I didn't know she breathed frostbreath! He thought, Oh frog spit I'm dead, I'm dead.... wait. He stopped and looked at his arm as the ice fell on top of it. The frost was so weak it didn't even penetrate his skin or seap through his scales or anything. It just kind of sat there. Hmmm pathetically interesting and weird, Windchaser peered down at it and brushed it off his arm as the ice went plop to the ground.
Uh oh, Whitedust thought. She'd never used her frostbreath on another dragon either, and she guessed it was only useful for freezing berries.
He snatched the scroll up while Whitedust was still thinking about her frostbreath. "Ha!" He exclaimed and smiled at her. Now I can see what he's been doing, what he's said, and take him! "Thank you so much, Whitedust, for returning what is rightfully mine."
Whitedust still lay on the ground surprised and confused as to what was going on. "What is that?" She asked.
"You don't know what this is, yet you're carrying it around with you?" He asked. Very unlikely hybrid, you know exactly what's going on.
"No, I mean- I am, yes, it's just that- I don't understand what's so important with it". Whitedust wanted to figure out things about Scroll.
"Stay down," Windchaser said, "don't give me another reason to kill you".
"I-" Whitedust started, I want to know who that is behind the scroll, that's what I want, I want to know why you appeared in my dreams and I want to know how you know Scroll.
"H-hey!" A new voice sounded from the trees. A new, familiar voice...
A SandWing came barreling through the leaves to end up squaring next to the two of them. "I wouldn't do that if I were you. Well, um whatever you're about to do, don't do it cause it's not the right decision on your part." I hope that sounded intimidating, his mind muffled. It was Barren.
Windchaser turned his head towards Barren. What kind of a scrawny creature would ever challenge someone like me? "Says you." He replied, but gave Barren no time to say anything else before he turned to Whitedust again. "Goodbye," he said without another word, and took off flying.
Whitedust watched as he flew away with the scroll. She smiled. "What an idiot," she mumbled. Did he really not see that there were two scrolls around her? Or was he that desperate to acquire it? And why didn't he look in it before? Geez.
Whitedust had to run though, before Windchaser realized he was carrying a false scroll, though, and with Barren here, she had to take him too without explaining her reasoning.
Barren cocked his head at her. "Why? What do you mean? Oh no!" He yelped. "What was that in his talons!?" Was that my scroll???
Whitedust twinged. This poor dragonet was probably looking for her after she left him. "He just- I don't know what I'm saying, I'm so sorry, Barren... it was your scroll."
Oh no.... His mind went. That's terrible. Whitedust must be miserable, I thought she'd love it and now it's gone, I knew I shouldn't have given it to her now, I knew I should have followed her immediately after... "That's alright," he peeped out. "I can make you a new one."
Whitedust smiled at him. What an adorable innocent small dragon. "Hey, uh.. I have to go."
Oh please not again! His mind went, I just found you and now you're leaving? Come on... I just want to talk, start over! "Where?" He asked. "Umm... can I- uh, maybe come with you? Walk with you, uh or fly with you? I actually would prefer walking because this sack of scrolls is killing me."
Alright. I won't abandon this one any longer, as long as he doesn't advance toward me again. "Yeah, sure." She said, and looked up in the sky. We need to go now, Windchaser could've realized it and it could all be over in a few minutes.
Three moons! I did it, I asked her and she loves me!! His mind screamed. Barren let out the hugest ear to ear smile.
The two of them ran out of the trees into the city of Possibility. Barren's mind was baffled by the idea that he got to spend his time with Whitedust, and she was growing on him.
Ask questions, ask questions, get to know her... "um" Barren said as they walked through the streets of Possibility. "So, where are you from?"
Whitedust decided to be more open with him than she was with Qibli. Barren wasn't trying to investigate like Qibli was - he was actually curious about her life. "I'm living in Thorn's stronghold with my mom and dad." She said, not knowing if she should add on or not.
"Wow!" That's so cool what the heck... Barren said. "I rarely visit there, which is why I thought it was cool that the one rare time I did, you were there, and we met each other! I live here in Possibility. It's a wonderful town if you get to know it, and there are so many nice dragons here!" He gestured to the different tribes walking through the streets.
"Mmhmm," Whitedust nodded. She was actually curious how old this dragon was. She's talked to him a few times, but they were just awkward conversations. "So, Barren, how old are you?"
Does that mean she's interested in me? Holy moons maybe!! Take it slow Barren, you know what happened last time. Just be cool, be cool. "I'm four." He answered.
Now that was surprising. Whitedust looked at him, and sure, he was about her height, maybe a little smaller, but he was extremely skinny and looked three. Now looking at him, she could see why he never flew. The bag he was carrying between his wings was stuffed, and his quills and ink pots were all around his ankles and wrists. Anything could fall, and his wings would probably feel exhausted if he tried to fly.
She's looking at my scrolls... Barren's mind examined, "uh, would you like another one? I have plenty!" He smiled.
"Yes please, actually." Whitedust said, a little surprised that he'd do so much for her.
The two of them stopped walking while Barren swung the bag around his shoulders to hit the ground. Thud. He dug around in the bag. "Where is it..." he mumbled. I know it's around here somewhere... "Aha!" He exclaimed as he yanked out a scroll. This scroll was red, and had white dragons painted all over it - IceWings to be specific.
"That's gorgeous... Thank you" Whitedust replied as he dropped the scroll into her talons. He closed his bag and weakly swung it back around his shoulders to land between his wings once again.
"So..." Whitedust started as she put her new scroll around her neck. "Why do you have all those scrolls and quills?" She asked.
Barren laughed a little. What do I say? That's so weird haha, I love that. "I am an aspiring writer, I make fiction and non-fictional stories, and I hope one day my scrolls can be in Pyrrhia's history!" He started walking again and Whitedust caught up to him. "I know some of these are empty, but most are written in - that's why it took a while to find a scroll for you. Well, that, and I wanted it to be perfect for you. To fit you." He added.
That's sweet. Whitedust thought. He sure did have talent.
"Let me hear about you! You're a hybrid, I see that, so don't tell me what's obvious!" Barren joked.
"Well, I've known my parents for almost three years. I never started really living with them until I was two years old, and it's strange, you know?" Whitedust told Barren how her parents had to hide her to keep her safe, and only visited her baby self every so often to feed her. Through this story, Barren didn't say anything. He listened intently. But his mind was full of thoughts and questions like 'oh poor Whitedust... maybe that's why she's anti-social.. I can help her!' and 'I wonder what would've happened if they'd kept her somehow.. like, maybe in their kingdoms? No, that wouldn't work..', 'maybe she wants to be my friend', etc.
When Whitedust was finished she felt a little conceited. "Oh moons, enough about my pity party, I'm over it. Tell me about your life, Barren."
Wow! She actually wants to know more about me! I don't know why I'm so excited to hear this news but I am?! Barren scratched the back of his head with his talon, "Uh well, warning: my life is pretty boring and not as exciting as yours haha. I've lived here all my life, and my dad draws a lot, so he inspired me to get into drawing and writing. I personally think I'm a better writer, which is why I do it a lot more. Anyway, speaking of drawings, what about that drawing I gave you? Did you like it?" Oh no... His mind trailed, It was in the scroll that thief took, wasn't it.... it's okay! I'll make her a new one!
"It was wonderful, Barren." Whitedust smiled as she brushed wings with him. She decided not to tell him that she had lost the drawing in less than a day.
Ooooooohhhhh gosh! Don't freak out Barren! It was just her wing! It was probably an accident, a coincidence! That's it, a coincidence that she did right as she complimented me. She's so adorable. Oh my gosh I think I'm in love. Hold on Barren, don't get your hopes up, she probably will only ever like you as a friend, don't lose all hope though... oh! A thank you would be nice! She complimented my drawing, that's right, duh. "Thanks Dust." He smiled. Hope she liked that nickname. Much better than Whitegust, oh moons was I nervous that time....
Whitedust smiled, but still felt a little guilty. She couldn't help her mind reading abilities, yet she was invading his personal information.... It was much easier to listen to one head when everyone else wasn't around, she didn't have a big headache, but it was also hard to channel it out, nearly impossible. The two of them were now alone on the outskirts of Possibility.
"No problem." Whitedust replied. "I'm going to have to head home now, the sun's going down, and you should too."
"Oh yeah yeah, of course! I'll talk to you later? Tomorrow? Soon!" Barren scrambled.
Whitedust replied with a giggle and nodded. She turned around to fly away, saying, "Bye Barren," before sweeping herself off her feet and flapping her wings towards home.
