~CHAPTER 36~

Ore and Combustion tore a branch each off one of the trees and stripped them of their leaves and excess branches. They were thick and heavy – the perfect clubs for their plan.

"I think those will work perfectly." One-Eye said, eyeing their makeshift weapons. "These should knock out those guards without much resistance."

"So, we knock the guards unconscious, and then we just rush in?" Charcoal asked her father.

"Not right away. Once we knock 'em out, we need to look inside and see what exactly we're dealing with." He answered. He looked over at Glow and Corona and pointed to them. "You two. You can check. You're smaller than us, so it'll be easier for you to look inside without getting caught. Are you alright with that?"

Glow and Corona both nodded. "Not a problem, general." Corona said, dipping her head respectfully.

Glow clenched her jaw, wincing and running a tongue where her front teeth used to be. Anything to save Kite. Anything to bring him back. "I've done it before. This will be easy for me." Glow answered.

One-Eye nodded, lifting a tail for the others to fall in behind him. They encroached on the cave, keeping to the shadows of the wood shielding them. The one-eyed red SkyWing gestured with his head forward for Ore and Combustion to move forward, creeping along each side of the cave. Their clubs were ready to strike and their steps were silent.

The two SkyWing guards were unsuspecting and oblivious to the danger lurking behind them. Ore had her club in her talons, ready to strike. Her muscles rippled with straining effort, trying to remain incognito in her attack.

Then, she swung hard and fast. With a thunk, the red guard crumpled to the ground silently. All that was heard from Combustion's end was an audible what the-? before the same thunk sound was heard and the crumpling of another body.

Combustion and Ore dragged the SkyWings' bodies toward the trees soundlessly. They were limp, flopping over the grass and roots like wet cloth. Glow wasn't sure if they were even alive until she noticed the slow rising and heaving of their chests once they were placed.

"Your turn." One-Eye said to Glow and Corona.

Glow nodded and pointed for Corona to go on Ore's side. The SandWing slunk slyly to the edge of the cave and peered inside, her black eyes darting around the cave observantly. Glow craned her neck and looked inside, seeing several shades of deep red to bright orange. Her amber eyes carefully picked out each shape that was inside. It was a spacious cave, so it held a lot of dragons, but not so many that it was cramped.

Glow counted around twenty SkyWings, pacing and discussing with each other, completely unaware that the two guards outside have disappeared. Well. That's a problem. There's too many. Her eyes flicked to the back of the cave. Sure enough, there she was, the savage captain promoted general by her evil queen. Cinnabar's silver wings twitched irritably while her menacing glare scanned the cave.

Right beside her, the small yellow-orange dragonet that made Glow's heart sigh with relief. Although, something about him threw her off. She expected him to be curled up tightly and trembling. Yet, he was just standing there. His wings drooped and his head hung low. He looked...weak. He looked as if all hope and life was drained out of him and he had completely given up. Glow couldn't stand seeing him like that; it burned her up seeing Kite so hopeless.

She needed to figure out a way to make this fight easier. Maybe if we can draw them out somehow. Glow looked down towards her foot and noticed some rocks nearby. She didn't want to reach down in case she was noticed, but it did give her an idea. She signaled to Corona to head back to One-Eye, and the SandWing nodded and slunk away.

One-Eye was waiting patiently for their return. Glow and Corona padded up to him; Glow was prepared to offer him her idea. "So, what's the status?" He asked.

"There are at least twenty dragons in there, not including Cinnabar and Kite." Corona answered.

Condor shouldered his way forward. "Is he alright? Did Cinnabar hurt him?" He asked worriedly.

Glow shook her head. "I have no idea, but he seems to be alright for the most part." She answered honestly.

Condor's face drooped in fear when Charcoal draped a wing over him. "We'll rescue him. I promise, Condor." She assured. He dipped his head at his sister and nodded appreciatively.

"So, what do we do about the surplus of soldiers in there?" Combustion asked reasonably.

Glow stepped forward. "We could create a diversion and draw some of them out and ambush them like we did with the two guards." She suggested.

Flashover cocked his head to the side confusedly. "How? Wouldn't we just drag all of them out by doing that?" He asked.

Corona shook her head. "Not necessarily." She answered. "If they all went out looking, then there would be no one to guard the cave. Either half or at least a quarter would go out looking." She explained. "They'll either run into us, and we knock them out. Or, they end up searching the area while we barge in and start wrecking the place."

One-Eye was listening carefully. Ore was nodding enthusiastically. "You're a clever SandWing, Corona. You'd make a good strategist, y'know?" She complimented. Corona just looked away awkwardly, not really sure how to respond. "But, how do we lure them out? Wouldn't seeing one of us cause all of them to start swarming us?" She asked.

Glow put a wing over Corona, pulling her comforting warmth closer to her. "Well, there are some rocks over on the side I was on that we can use. Not too big of a distraction, but just enough to cause some suspicion." She explained.

One-Eye put a claw on her shoulder. "Sounds like a plan." He said, smiling. "Since I put Avalanche in charge of guarding the hostages, I'll let you and Corona plan our next move." He explained.

At this point, Glow was so used to making decisions that she just responded with "Okay." She turned towards Ore and Combustion with their clubs and thought of an idea. "The rest of you should get clubs, too. They'll come in handy." She suggested. She waited for the others to get some clubs ready.

Corona nudged her slightly. "Hey." She whispered. Glow bent her neck down to see her SandWing companion. "Are you doing alright?" She asked.

Glow shuffled uncomfortably. "I'm just anxious, is all." She replied.

Corona shuffled closer to Glow. "You're worried about Kite, too." She said.

Glow shook her head. "Of course I am. Did you see the way he looked?" She asked.

"I know." Corona agreed. "The way he looked like he just...gave up. On everything. I don't even want to think about what Cinnabar's reaction was when she finally got a hold on him."

Glow started trembling. She didn't want to think of it either.

"Hey." Corona said, grabbing Glow's forearm tightly. "It'll be okay. We'll get Kite back, no matter what it takes. He'll never have to see that horrible dragon ever again, and he'll even have his dad back." She calmed. Glow tried to focus on breathing to calm down, Corona's warmth enveloping her. It was only after she calmed down that she realized that Corona had been hugging her tightly, as if she was never going to let go.

       "Hey, Corona?" Glow asked.

       "Mhm?" Corona hummed.

Glow pulled back and stared into Corona's uncertain ebony eyes. "No matter what happens, no regrets, right?" She said.

Corona was quiet. "No regrets." She promised.

"Alright." One-Eye said, returning with his group. "You ready to start our rescue plan?" He asked.

Glow nodded. "I'm ready." She said with certainty.

One-Eye nodded, and the other SkyWings readied their weapons. Glow grabbed one of the rocks nearby and lobbed it over to the entrance of the cave. She retreated back as a deep red SkyWing trotted out, looking around. Glow signaled to Ore, Flashover, and Combustion to take the other side of the cave.

They took off around the mountain and around while Glow waited for the soldier to head their way. She took a smaller pebble and flung it near him. He looked over in her direction just before she fled further away from the entrance. She and Corona moved behind One-Eye while they waited. He turned the corner and before he could call for help, One-Eye slammed his club hard on the soldier's head. He pulled him into the bush before he could fall to the ground.

Glow heard some voices come out of the cave. Glow could detect three different voices, but it was a little difficult to tell. The lead one was clearly female, and she was headed their way. "Get some more soldiers to head around the other side. I smell trouble." She ordered.

Glow moved even further behind Condor and Charcoal with Corona right beside her as the soldiers stamped towards them. There were four dragons, the lead female was bright red, and the other three were differing shades of amber. One-Eye knocked the lead out while Condor clamped the jaws of one shut and knocked out another.

Charcoal wrestled with her soldier, trying to keep him from calling for help, and had dropped her club. Glow saw that Charcoal was in danger, and that their plan was about to be jeopardized. She grabbed Charcoal's club and slammed it into the soldier's head, and then the one Condor was struggling with.

One-Eye and Condor pulled the rest of the bodies into the bushes, hidden from view. "Alright, we don't have much time. What next?" One-Eye asked, Condor and Charcoal looked worried, like they had a gut feeling that things would start to go wrong at this point in the plan.

"We charge in, now that there's a number we can actually face." Glow said.

"But what about Combustion and the others?" Charcoal asked, holding her claws together.

"They'll join us once they hear the ruckus inside." Corona said. "You ready, Glow?"

Glow shuddered and rooted herself, preparing to fight the group of fire-breathing SkyWings inside. "Well, it's not like we can back out now." She said. "We move."

She leaped forward into the cave and slashed her talons across one of the soldier's faces. The soldier reeled back in pain and several other soldiers darted towards her.

Corona ran to stand beside her SkyWing companion, her tail unsheathed and darting at the attacking SkyWings. The SkyWings made the fire-hissing sound at Glow, and she spread her wings to protect Corona. Glow fanned the flames away while breathing her own at them. The flames got too close to the other soldiers, and they ducked away, screaming and clutching their burn wounds. Glow let them go and carry their friend out of the cave.

"Well, looks like I was right." Cinnabar called from the back of the cave, flaring up in front of Kite. "You maggots don't know when to quit."

Glow resisted the urge to run over and attack Cinnabar, especially while Kite was so close to her. That's just what she wants from me. I'm not going to give her that satisfaction. She also didn't want to hurt Kite by accident. If she did, she might never be able to forgive herself.

"The same could be said for you, Cinnabar." One-Eye hissed. "It's not too late to end this before it gets worse. Let Kite go back with his family, or I can't promise that these soldiers, or you, will be safe."

"Kite is my son!" She snarled. "The ungrateful lizard ran away from me once, I won't let him escape me again."

"He is my son, too, Cinnabar!" Condor called. Kite snapped his head towards him, his eyes alit with shock and hope.

Cinnabar narrowed her eyes and her tongue slid out in disgust. "Well, if it isn't my long lost mate." She spat. "It's been a while, Condor. I thought you were dead."

"No, and thankfully, neither was Kite." He said bitterly. Cinnabar's lips curled into a scowl. "Give me back my son." He demanded.

"You want Kite back?" Cinnabar shouted, her jaw hanging in surprise. "After you left me?! While he was out there shivering and starving?!"

"Stop." Condor said firmly. "Stop blaming me for everything that was wrong in our household. Stop acting like you care when you take out all your anger on the two of us. And stop acting like you're right! Look at Kite! Look at how terrified he is of you! Don't you see what you're doing?!" He cried. No answer from Cinnabar. Condor's eyes narrowed as he stared down his former wife. "I'm tired of not doing anything! I'm tired of running away and saying nothing like a coward. This ends here!"

Condor, Charcoal, and One-Eye charged towards Cinnabar, while she summoned the two buff dragons next to her to fight them. The other soldiers got out of their way and instead charged towards Glow and Corona. They were big, much bigger than Glow. Corona had her tail ready to kill them, and Glow was ready to fight to the death – for Kite.

Corona leaped out at them, barb ready to kill. The orange soldier swatted her away, avoiding her barb like it was nothing. Glow heard her thump against a wall and panicked. "Corona!" She cried, when she was tackled to the ground by the red soldier

The red soldier pinned her down by the legs and feet, using his wings to hold down hers. He was much bigger and stronger than Glow, and she felt helpless in his grip. She snapped her neck out to bite him when the orange soldier slammed down hard on her throat, preventing her from moving any further or even breathing fire at him.

"Can't fight this one, can ya?" The orange soldier growled at her.

"Kind of a shame." The red one hissed. "I like it when they fight."

Terror gripped Glow like a meat hook. She started trembling and her teeth began to chatter, while the two burly soldiers towered over her. She tried and tried, but she couldn't fight out of their grip no matter how hard she tried. No. I can't escape. I can't fight my way out of this! I'm trapped! It was just like being in Burn's grasp, yet somehow she felt like she was in even more danger than then.

Suddenly she saw a flash of pale gold, and blood spurted on her face. The red SkyWing was pulled off of her, and there was blood pouring out of a gash in his neck. He toppled over beside her, convulsing until he finally stopped, and the orange one was struggling to fight off whatever was trying to kill him. Glow had no time to process the SkyWing's death and took the opportunity while her body was free to give him a hard kick to the side. He reeled back, releasing Glow's neck, and slammed his back into the wall.

Glow looked over and realized that the orange dragon had slammed Corona into the wall, her body was dislocated in several different places and she was covered in bruises. No! Corona! Glow was paralyzed, but she forced herself to dart towards Cinnabar and Condor. If I stop Cinnabar, then this will all stop! She tried to run as quickly as possible, when she felt something grab her by the tail and yank her back.

She was immediately pinned again, on her stomach this time. She felt the SkyWing's breath in her torn ear and shuddered in fear. "Where do you think you're going?" He hissed. She couldn't see or feel what was happening, but terror gripped her and she flailed her back legs wildly, trying to get away. "Don't worry; you'll be dead after this is over. But I'll have a bit of fun with you first." He whispered dangerously. Oh three moons! Please don't! Her breathing hitched and she began trembling with fear.

She flailed wildly while the SkyWing was trying to hold her in place with his back legs. He was pushing his left leg underneath her tail, his grip on her becoming painful. His talons were digging into her and the force his wings were using to pin her felt like they would tear through hers in a few moments. She felt something wet prod her underneath her tail, and she flailed and shook wildly, trying to escape from the fate she was about to experience, trying to prevent him from forcefully penetrating her. This is what Frigga meant. This is what that IceWing traitor did to her mother right before her eyes. She realized with horror that, even though she already knew it, was painfully becoming true right now. And it's about to happen to me.

She tried to scream out for help while she continued wildly flailing, but he was standing on her neck. Tears poured out of her eyes, dampening the stone underneath her injured jaw. She could feel the solder on top of him struggling to hold her and push against her, cursing while he was struggling, and she felt like she was going to faint from the combined panic and lack of airflow. She felt like she was going to throw up, like her quickening heartbeat was going to kill her. In that moment, she would have welcomed the sweet release of death. She was beginning to tire, but she didn't give up. If she did, he would have his way with her and then he'd kill her. Anything but this would have been welcomed by the helpless red SkyWing held in place by the SkyWing soldier. She panicked as she felt her strength faltering. She couldn't keep this up forever. Sooner now, he would win and she would be completely helpless to his will. No! Please no! I'm not ready! Let me go, I'll do anything! Just please don't-

Suddenly he started screaming, and he toppled over. The force and threat crushing her backside and prodding between her legs was removed before it could go any further. The air was icy cold. When she saw him stumbling around, she realized that he was slowly being frozen alive, the ice creeping and encasing his twitching soon-to-be corpse. She didn't have to turn around to know who the rolling creeping chill across the cave floor belonged to.

She didn't have to look to know who came to her aid just in time.

"Keep your filthy claws off of my APPRENTICE!" Frigga hissed, her voice cracking and breaking like the kingdom she hailed from.

All fighting in the room ceased. The SkyWings stared at the cave entrance agape. The soldiers fighting for Cinnabar stepped away from their opponents and sat down quietly, not wanting to invoke her chilling rage.

Flashover was injured in the fight and had to lean on Ore for support, while Combustion was covered in wounds. Condor was dripping with the blood streaming out of his wounds, Cinnabar's talons and jaws stained with it. Charcoal sustained some wounds, but One-Eye gave the two dragons fighting them some injuries to remember.

Glow saw Evenstar scramble over to Corona carrying medical supplies, examining her broken body. She slowly heaved herself up so that he could examine her bruises and broken bones, and collapsed under her own weight.

She felt Frigga walk up quickly behind Glow and envelop her with her chilly wings. In that moment, Glow was trembling – not from the cold – but from what just happened. What almost happened if not for her caretaker. "Are you alright, Glow?" She asked. Frigga was so gentle, but so horrified. Pure genuine horror and trauma was etched onto her graceful features, but there was relief swirling in her icy blue eyes. "Are you hurt?" She asked, quietly.

Glow couldn't stop crying. Glow felt numb. She knew she was shaking, and felt like she was going to vomit, but other than that, she felt disconnected and outside of herself. Nothing felt real, and she wished it wasn't. Her head was spinning and reeling. She couldn't focus on anything and found it difficult to stand. She just wanted to go home in Frigga's wings and cry. She just wanted to cry and cry and cry and forget that anything ever happened. She just wanted to go back.

She was acutely aware of all the sounds in the cavern. The breaths of both her friends, and the soldiers they fought. She could hear the evening birds singing outside, and the wind blowing past the cave entrance. It reminded Glow of the mountain cave back home. She wanted desperately in that moment to go home and curl up alongside her family. She wanted to forget that any of this ever happened. She wanted to shed all of the responsibility and horror that she had witnessed off her shoulders and go back to living her life as a simple craft merchant.

She suddenly realized that Frigga was addressing her and nodded, her mind slow at forming thoughts and words. "N-no. I'm...I'm alright." She choked out. I'm not fine. I'm not fine at all. I want to die. I don't want to exist. I don't want any of this to be real. I just want to go home. Please just take me home. I don't want to be here. Even talking made her want to break down and sob in Frigga's wings. She was never more thankful and grateful for Frigga than in this very moment. "Was..." She tried. "W-was that w-what h-h-happened to," she hesitated. Trying to speak was already difficult with her injured jaw and missing teeth, but it was even more difficult now that she couldn't even form her thoughts right. "To y-your m-m-mother?" She finally managed to finish.

Frigga held her against her chest tightly, her wings hiding Glow completely from view. "Yes, Glow." She answered quietly. Glow started to get some feeling back in her talons, and she suddenly realized that she had been holding her breath. "Thank the Great Ice Dragon you're safe, Glow." Frigga croaked quietly. Glow rested her head on Frigga's shoulder and let the tears began to finally stop. She felt safe in Frigga's wings, at the very least, and she started to stop trembling. She was still finding it hard to think straight, but she was coming back slowly. Realizing that Frigga almost relived one of her most painful memories, her empathy took over and she nuzzled under the IceWing's chin. "I'm s-so sorry, Frigga." Glow murmured.

       The ice dragon said nothing.

It was as if time itself had stopped, until they were interrupted. "What are you doing here?" Cinnabar said unsympathetically. Glow didn't have to see the IceWing's face to know that she was glaring icy blue daggers at the silver-winged SkyWing. "It's not like any of these dragons are your responsibility anyways."

"Unhand my dragonet, you shambling parasite!" She hissed. She carried her gently, still shielding her from view toward their allies, who did the same. Frigga handed Glow's limp body to Ore and Flashover and unfurled herself from Glow. Evenstar quietly pulled Corona towards Glow and their SkyWing companions and pressed his forehead to Glow's. She was still not quite back to reality, but she was slowly coming back. She swore she could feel Evenstar crying. Odd...I don't think I've ever seen him cry before. Corona dragged herself to Glow and rested her head on her chest, despite wincing and wretching in pain from her own injuries.

Frigga began stalking toward Cinnabar, her serrated icy talons scraping against the stone beneath them as she crept forward.

"Your dragonet!? He's my son!" Cinnabar spat.

"Silence!" Frigga snarled. She didn't stop trudging forward. "You lost the privilege of being his mother the moment you uttered a scornful word toward him. You lost that honour the instant you dared strike him with your own talons." Frigga hissed.

"And what makes you think you can call yourself his mother? You're not even a SkyWing." Cinnabar questioned. Condor, Charcoal, and One-Eye were moving aside to give Frigga more room. Kite was glancing up at them from under his wing in his terrified bundle of limbs.

"Maybe so," Frigga snarled, getting closer to the SkyWing. "But I took care of him when he ran away from you. It was because of you that Evenstar found him, wounded on my doorstep. I gave him the home and love you never did."

"He needs his mother!" Cinnabar roared.

"I AM HIS MOTHER!" Frigga screeched, a crackling hissing sound was heard from where Frigga was standing. "As far as I'm concerned, you never deserved to have a son as kind and pure-hearted as Kite. And you will never hurt him ever again."

Cinnabar's dark amber eyes briefly flashed with terror and she opened her mouth to shoot a bolt of flame at Frigga, but it was too late. The furious IceWing had already shot ice down her throat, and all Cinnabar could do was gasp and clutch her stomach while the ice was slowly eating her from the inside.

She stumbled into the middle of the cave, trembling and writhing in petrified agony while the ice was slowly encasing her. Her screams were dry and hoarse, crackling as the ice was creeping out of her mouth and crawling across her face. Her eyes were frozen in a permanent state of horror, and she looked like a horrific statue carved by a sadistic dragon.

But Glow knew that it wasn't the product of sadism – it was a mother pushed too far. A mother looking after her dragonet.

Frigga turned towards Kite, but anguish gripped her diamond-shaped face. There were tears in Kite's eyes. His hazel eyes were wide with shock and apprehension. When Frigga extended a talon to him, he scrambled away, blubbering and crying. Glow winced as she saw Frigga pull her claw away and turn to collect Corona. Glow could almost hear the sound of Frigga's heart breaking.

Glow was so focused on the scene that played out in front of her that she didn't realize that Corona was holding Glow's talon tightly. "G-Glow?" Corona croaked.

Glow snapped her head towards her friend. Corona's black eyes were droopy and exhausted. "I'm glad...you're alright." She gasped. She crumpled to the ground, clutching her limbs. Evenstar pulled the supplies on his back into a more stable position.

"We need to get her to the forge. She needs a quiet place to rest and recover from her injuries." Evenstar instructed. Evenstar glanced worryingly at Glow. "And Glow needs a safe environment to recuperate and come back." He added.

Frigga carefully scooped up Corona in her arms, like a delicate flowerbed. "We'll go to rendezvous with Whitecap and Willow in the Bay of a Thousand Scales. There we can finally rest and take a break from all this bloodshed." Evenstar followed closely behind the IceWing, peering worriedly at the crippled SandWing in her arms.

"Umbalite's family found us and offered to bring our things there for us." Evenstar assured answered. He turned to One-Eye, who was comforting Charcoal and Condor at the moment. "By the way, Queen Ruby has taken over. Scarlet has disappeared, and Ruby has decided to make you general again. She's allowed Umbalite's family to travel outside the city and the Sky Kingdom, so things are already starting to look better for the Sky Kingdom. Seemingly the instant Scarlet was dethroned." He explained.

One-Eye dipped his head and the other soldiers rallied around the single-eyed general. Glow was pulled into Ore's large muscular arms much gentler than she expected from the big gruff soldier. The little SkyWing scrambled into Charcoal's gentle arms and sobbed into them. "You're okay...you're all okay..." He quietly wept.

Condor walked over and put a wing over them both. "Kite, it's me. I...I'm back. And I won't be leaving this time, I promise." He assured, tears in his eyes.

"I know, dad..." Kite answered. "I know."

"I'll miss you, Condor." Charcoal whispered.

"We all will." Ore said holding Glow, supporting her brother.

"At least Kite's okay." Combustion consoled.

One-Eye nodded. "Don't you go missing again, alright?" He jested half-heartedly.

Condor nodded. "I won't, father." He promised.

"If you're finished," Frigga interrupted. "We'd best be going."

One-Eye pulled them all into a group hug, wrapping his massive wings around them. "Goodbye, son. And good luck." One-Eye whispered.

       "You too, father." Condor replied.

Glow looked up, still weak and torn from reality, into Ore's kind eyes. "Well be back soon, general. We just need to make sure that Kite and his family make it to the Bay of a Thousand Scales safely." Ore explained.

One-Eye nodded. "Just be sure to be ready for duty tomorrow morning." He ordered.

Ore nodded, and Glow curled herself up in her arms tightly. It was strangely quiet. Is it over? Is it really over? Are we...going home?

Just as they left the cave, Condor was faced by Avalanche, leading the soldiers they knocked out. Her face was mixed.

"You're not coming back to the Talons, are you?" Avalanche asked.

Condor sighed. "No. I need to be there for my son." He answered, looking over worriedly at his still crying dragonet in his sister's arms.

"I understand." She said quietly. "Good luck, my friend. I wish you the best."

Condor nodded and followed Frigga. "We go southeast from here, past the Mud Kingdom. We'll stop to rest once we get to our destination." She instructed.

Frigga lifted into the sky, the sun setting in the distance, and Glow looked back at the cave, clutching Ore around her neck. Glow could barely remain conscious anymore, and eventually started to fall to her emotional exhaustion.

Glow couldn't help but feel a regretful lump in her stomach as she looked back at the Sky Kingdom as it grew farther and farther away. She couldn't help but wonder if there was a way Cinnabar could have lived. Perhaps she simply was never told right from wrong, and took it out on Kite and Condor. It wasn't an excuse, but it was a reason. Could Cinnabar have lived a happy family life with Kite and Condor? No. She was willing to hurt them in the first place. What would stop her from doing it again? Yet, she couldn't help but regret the course of events. Was there any hope for Cinnabar?

Well, it was already too late to find out, so there was really no point in dwelling on it. Glow shuffled closer into Ore's chest and fell asleep, humming Frigga's lullaby to herself, trying to distract herself from the horror of what just happened.

       Shortly, she fell asleep.
