Chapter Twenty-Four
Trigger warning: kidnapping, blood
They rushed to the throne room where they were met with an array of angered gods.
"Whats going on?" Kym yelled over the repeated explosions.
Hecate flung her hands up as another flash of light came down towards the palace. She managed to redirect it barely. "Old Zuzu decided to try out his big boy boots today."
Poseidon scowled and summoned his trident to his hand. He spun it in his hands before pointing upwards. A ghostly sheild began appearing around the kingdom, quickly brancing out in elaborate patterns.
Anteros swam in with Eros' arm around his waist, "Well that is unnecessarily fancy."
Poseidon looked back at him, "You are back up, I didn't think Zaia would let you."
Anteros grinned, "Xe couldn't resist my charm."
"We snuck out," Eros admitted.
The Sea god shook his head, "Of course you did. Anteros you stay here, you are not to fight at all."
"But Daaaad-"
"Anteros, no," Amphitrite said.
"Yes mother."
Amphitrite turned to Persephone who was studying the encanted painting that lay on the table. "Is the Underworld under attack?"
"Hades go check, Eris go with him. If not come back here immediately, if they are attacking send back something obvious through the shadows," Persephone said. The two gods in question vanished and the Queen of the Umderworld continued on. "It's unlikely that they will attack the Underworld as Zeus is here but it could be a diversion and they are trying to dwindle our numbers."
Triton pointed to the painting at a red blob beside a grey blob, "I'm guessing these are Athena and Ares. If it was a distraction they wouldn't risk three Olympians."
Hecate glanced over, "Especially not three that powerful."
"I wouldn't say Athena is powerful," Poseidon and Triton grumbled at the same time.
Amphitrite studied the painting too, "She is a war goddess though. But Tri is right, they wouldn't have three Olympians with full backup of powerful gods as a distraction."
"Unless they knew that we would completely abandon the Underworld to go to the main fight for support," Persephone said.
Just as she said that Eris and Hades appeared back beside them, "No attack in the Underworld, all entrances are guarded by 5 Keres each. No gods in sight."
Hecate gave a weak cheer, sweat running down her face as she still put all of her strength into redirecting the constant bolts while the sheild still formed. "At least thats one good thing."
Eros looked at her before fixing Kym with a glare to make her go over to the goddess of Magic. Once Kym did, Eros turned back to Anteros with a soft expression.
Triton would've gagged at that if she didn't want Thanatos to look that him the same way.
Yes he was a hopeless romantic like that.
And yes he was in the middle of a war.
Let him be foolishly in love with a death god in peace will you?
Nemesis looked across at Hecate who sent out a new wave of magic to slow a new bolt and redirect it to the side. "You should rest, we need you for the main fight. The sheild is nearly done."
"I agree, my sheild can hold for now," Poseidon said, still pointing his trident towards the sky as the last of the sea was blocked by the faint green pattern that branched across the entire kingdom.
Hecate leaned heavily against Kym who led her over to a table with various snacks on it. Hecate not being one to complain about free food began to pick away at some the snacks while the rest of them talked out a possible plan.
Persephone was tapping the table with her fingers quite aggressively, "We don't have time for a plan, the best thing we can do is just go up and try to trick them into the water."
Amphitrite groaned, "That wouldn't work, and we would still need at least an idea of attack."
Hades placed a hand on his wife's shoulder, "Personally, I think the best thing might just be to wait this out and hold them off. They'll have to fall back eventually."
"They would never willingly get into the water," Thanatos muttered.
"Brother you are a freaking genius," Eris squealed.
Everyone in the room froze, "What?"
"They would never willingly get in the water," Eris repeated. "So if we could cause some chaos that would force them into the water and then force them away."
"Draw the stronger ones in by attacking the weaker ones," Moros said, opening his mouth for one of the first times around more than 3 people.
Eros hugged Anteros protectively.
Moros rolled his eyes, "Who would be the weakest one up there? Or at least the one that the rest would most likely go to defend?"
"They wouldn't risk losing more gods for a 'minor' god, they wouldn't think that it would be worth it. Also as much ad I hate to admit it, Athena is smart, she would see what we are doing," Poseidon said, putting a hand under his chin. "But they wouldn't want to risk losing an Olympian."
The Queens hummed and looked at each other. Both deep in thought.
"Olympus," Kym said. "You said they wouldn't want to lose another Olympian, then why not go for one that's still on Olympus. They wouldn't be hear because they obviously don't think that they could defend themselves."
At that moment, Korla burst through the great doors, "The merfolk are panicking, what is going on?"
"Olympus is attacking," Amphitrite said, still deep in thought.
Korla froze, "Oh wow thats great." She saw their faces and frowned. "That was sarcasm, should I get the kingdom to evacuate?"
Thalassa looked at her, "Forgive my asking but why would you give the order to evacuate. I thought that was the role of the leaders of the Kingdom."
"I don't know who you are but I was just asking if I should get the Kingdom to evacuate. If Lord Poseidon or Lady Amphitrite said yes then that would be the leaders giving the order, not me. I would just be the messenger," Korla explained.
Amphitrite looked at Korla, "Don't evacuate but get the merfolk under the Sea floor. Tell the officals that it was a direct order from me."
Korla bowed her head before leaving the room, "Yes my lady, good luck."
Poseidon faced his wife, "She likes you more than me."
"A lot of merfolk like me more than you," Amphitrite said. "Kym had a good idea. I think we should send a team, not any of the Sea. Up to Olympus to get ourselves an Olympian. And as for the Sea gods-"
"Why should the Sea not go to Olympus?" Persephone interrupted.
"Two reasons, number one- they are banned from Olympus. Number two- I have another idea for them." Amphitrite continued on, explaining her plan. Once she finished she looked around at everyone. "Well, what do you think?"
"You certainly are the brains of the Sea," Persephone complimented.
In return, Amphitrite sent her a grin.
That was that, the plan was set.
* * *
The team that was always used for kidnappings on land before was sent to infiltrate Olympus and capture an Olympian or two.
Thanatos, Hecate and Hypnos.
"So who should we go for?" Thanatos asked as they walked towards the church that hid the entrance to Olympus.
"I would say Hera but knowing Zeus' past-times I don't know if he'd notice," Hecate said, drinking a mixture of Nectar and something else that Kym had mixed together for her, saying that it would help her get her energy back.
Thanatos wasn't so sure that it wasn't wine.
Hecate however wasn't complaining because she had asked Kym if they could meet up for drinks once everything had smoothed over and the Sea goddess had agreed. So Hecate was in a very good mood despite the fact that the Sea was currently being attacked.
"How about Hephaetus then?" Thanatos asked.
Hypnos nodded before yawning, "If I knocked him out then it would be easy enough."
"Lets take two or three," Hecate said brightly.
"Why?"
Hecate hesitated, "No reason."
"You want to try to impress Kym don't you?"
"Like you aren't doing the same for Triton," Hecate accused.
"What?"
"As your best friend, I know that you are gay for that fish so say out of my interests of being gay for another fish." Hecate jabbed him in the chest with her finger everytime she said the words 'gay' 'fish' and 'best friend'.
Hypnos side-eyed the two of them, "I am not a part of this conversation."
Hecate spun around to the other god, "Well now you are, so Hypnos any luck in the romance life lately?"
"You are so weird," Thanatos said quietly, dragging her on by the wrist towards the entrance to Olympus.
"I know but its a good question," Hecate protested.
"And I choose not to answer that good question," Hypnos said, going over to the small room at the back of the church that was hidden away from the rest.
"You will have to eventually," Thanatos and Hecate said at the same time. They both shot each other a look.
"There is a war going on so I would prefer not to talk about potential relationships," Hypnos said as space started to warp around them on the ascent to Olympus.
"But talking about the war is boring," Hecate said. "Thanatos gets it."
"Thats because its either talk about relationships now or you make a lot of terrible puns."
Hecate flicked his ear ignoring the 'ow' that escaped the taller god. "You made those ice puns with me don't even try to deny it."
Thanatos just rolled his eyes and the three of them stepped onto an empty Olympus. There was no trace that they had even so much as been close to the entrance. It was the same when they left less than an hour later with three Olympians in two and Hestia who wanted to see her brothers again.
Other than the four gods, no one had even noticed they were there. Well Aphrodite had known they were there for the few seconds until she fell into a deep sleep. Hera and Hephaetus had no idea, just doing what they had been doing (cursing Zeus and sharpening a sword respectfully) as the gods had snuck in and made sure that nobody else could see in.
The mission went good, now they would just have to find out how the Sea had fared.
When they got there the sheild was floating around in pieces. Ichor dripped down around the kingdom, making the Sea sparkle in the blood of the gods.
The trio (+ Hestia) watched as part of the palace crumbled, falling down to the sea floor and knocking up a cloud of sand.
None of the gods were in sight.
