Chapter Twenty-Eight
Trigger warning: blood, injury detail
They all stood together, walking in silence. At some point Eros had joined them. Thanatos had given him his cloak to hide his white wings and hair.
Triton chose to ignore that.
He looked over at his angel. Just a glance to make sure that he was still at his side. Something was wrong with him. Maybe he got injured or something, he didn't tell them where he had been before he showed up. Only when Eros showed up did the 'chaotic' group find out that Thanatos decided to piss off Zeus.
Triton was convinved that Thanatos was injured somehow. When they had passed a shrine to Ares, the god had thought he heard something and turned his head to face it. Then almost immediately after that he raised a hand to the spot between his shoulder and neck. Once Thanatos had noticed that they were all watching his movements he dropped his hand and continued walking. Quietly telling them that he had thought he had heard something but must have imagined it. He said nothing about his expression of pain or his hand hovering protectively over his shoulder.
Hecate stopped from where she was leading the group, "Ok what direction now?"
The was path split into two by a statue of Artemis standing in position to shoot an arrow towards the sky. On either side of them the buildings were crumbling, destroyed or on fire.
The other groups had done their work. They provided a distraction.
That was what all the groups had to do, cause a distraction, spread the gods thin and take them down.
And now, they were moving in to the last part of the plan.
There came a chorus of "Left,"'s in reply to Hecate's question.
As the rest of the group began to walk again, Triton grabbed Thanatos' left arm.
Thanatos tensed and hissed through his teeth while Triton held him in place. The rest walked on without them after Triton gestured for them to go on.
"Take your top off," Triton told the angel once the rest were out of earshot. He didn't need them to find his way about anyway, he had memorized the layout of Olympus. Also Kym would probably leave something to direct him where to go if there was another split in the path.
"What?"
Triton crossed his arms, "I said take your top off."
Thanatos slightly stepped back, raising a hand up to his shoulder. "Why?"
"You're hurt, now either you take it off or I can rip it off."
Thanatos just stared at Triton for a moment. Then he shook his head and laughed. Stepping closer he put his arms around him, but Triton only felt the pressure of one arm holding him.
Triton froze, "Wait no you were supposed to take your top off?"
"Please don't change," Thanatos whispered in Tritons ear.
"As in change clothes or change personality?"
"Idiot."
Triton rolled his eyes but smiled and hugged his angel back. Enjoying the feeling of his arm around him and his wings sheilding them from the wind.
He pulled back, "Now will you undress for me?"
Thanatos looked away from him, "Do I have to?"
"Yes you do."
Thanatos grumbled but still vanished his wings for the second it took for him to take off the top.
Triton near gagged.
The skin surrounding a gruesome would was charred black, blubbling and bleeding. A large part of his skin was gone, golden ichor streamed down his arm and chest. The bone was visible, charred and cracked. The bloodly flesh was in lumps.
"It probably looks worse than it is," Thanatos said sheepishly.
Raising his hand, Triton pulled water from the air, fulling covering his hand like a clear, moving glove.
Thanatos held his hand back with his uninjured hand, "Tri- don't."
Triton looked up at him and held his face softly with the hand that wasn't currently coated in water. "It'll be fine, it might sting a bit."
He smiled when Thanatos closed his eyes and leaned into his palm.
He only got to hold his hand over the wound for a second.
Electricity travelled up his arm. He jerked back from Thanatos unwilingly.
Triton looked at Thanatos with worry. The god wasn't phased at all by the electricity.
"Did you not feel that?"
"A bit, it all just went mostly numb."
"Did you know that was going to happen?"
"No, but it happens every time I try to heal myself but it shouldn't have hurt you. Did it hurt you? Sorry," Thanatos said starting to panic. He raised his hands to run through his hair before wincing. "Ow."
Triton laughed without meaning to, "You're an idiot."
Thanatos looked over at him, one hand still in his hair. "But-"
Triton walked over to him and gently pulled his hands down from his face. "But you're my idiot."
"But did it hurt you?" Thanatos asked, looking Triton up and down.
"Not really, I've gotten worse from Kym. Why didn't you tell me before though?"
Thanatos looked down, "I didn't want you to worry."
At that point, Triton stood on his tiptoes to be taller than Thanatos (even though they were basically the same height anyway) and pulled him into a hug. Cradling his head to his chest. Ignoring the way that Thanatos was slightly shaking and his muffled laughter.
"Stop laughing Angel," Triton finally said. Dropping back down to his normal height.
Thanatos just pulled him against him tighter. Not moving nor wavering his hold. Still shaking against Tritons shoulder.
"Shut up."
Thanatos pulled back and grinned at him, "Were you trying to be taller than me?"
Triton glared at him.
"Awwww you're adorable." Thanatos ran his fingers through his hair.
"No I'm not," Triton said. Lookong down at the ground so that Thanatos couldn't see his smile.
"Yes, you are."
Tritons feet were lifted off the ground and he instinctively grabbed onto Thanatos tightly. Shutting his eyes he waited for the wind to start roaring in his ears. Fully expecting the god to just start flying.
He realised that they weren't airborne when Thanatos started laughing.
Triton looked down at him (yes down) and that was the moment he found out that Thanatos was not about to start flying. Two reasons: 1) he wasn't holding Triton right if he did want to fly and 2) if he was going to fly then he was doing it blind because Triton would be blocking his line of sight.
"Oh hey I'm taller than you," Triton said as Thanatos started walking along.
"Only because I'm holding you up."
"Is that detail really important though? I'm taller than you, thats what matters."
"Whatever you say darlin'."
Rather than stop functioning as he would have a while ago if Thanatos had called him that, Triton just laughed. He ran his fingers through Thanatos' hair easily.
"I do say so, darling."
Thanatos looked up at him again and smiled, "It sounds better when I say it."
"I know." His hand fell down to the gods neck. The other still in his hair. "I haven't said it before, but you are very pretty. It should be illegal to look that good."
"It already is, why else would I not be allowed on Olympus?" Thanatos said, turning to the left and continuing to walk on.
If Triton didn't know the path they were walking on then he would think that Thanatos is taking him off somewhere to be alone. Unfortunately, he did know the path and he knew that they were following where the rest of the group would be going. A shame, the other fantasy was nice.
Triton laughed, "Oh by Apate's gambling addiction, now it all makes sense. You know I thibk thats why I got banned too."
"You'd make all the other gods distracted just by walking down the street." Thanatos took a right.
"Oh do you get distracted when I walk past?"
"That depends on who is asking," Thanatos said, smiling softly.
"Me, me is asking," Triton said, smiling like an utter lunatic.
"Well then, why do you wanna know?"
Triton tilted Thanatos' face up, "Tell me."
His angel just grinned at him, "Nope."
"Please?" Triton said. Putting a hand back into Thanatos' hair as if it would persuade him to give him an answer.
"Why is Tri begging?" Kym's voice interrupted the moment that the two gods were having.
"And Thani where is your shirt?" Eris asked, appearing out of nowhere to poke his bare arm.
"And is Triton hurt? Why are you carrying him?" Hecate questioned.
Eros gleefully clapped his hands, "I ship it."
"20 drachmas they get together by the end of the week," Hermes said to the white haired god.
"30 for the end of the day."
Hermes shook hands with Eros, "You got yourself a deal."
Eris popped up beside them, "I heard drachmas, can I have some?"
"We're making a bet on when those two get together," Hermes explained.
"We can hear you," Triton called over the vast expanse between them of 1 and a half metres.
Naturally, the three bet-making gods ignored him.
"15 says it takes them until midsummer," Eris finally said after careful consideration.
Triton groaned and buried his head in Thanatos' hair. This could take a while.
* * *
After forever, they somehow managed to get to the Olympian Throne room with all limbs intact. Of course they weren't under attack from other gods but the other members of the group kept trying to annoy each other.
Thankfully, the only injury that had occured in the last hour since the bets was Eris' brusied ego.
Since then they had just walked on in silence. Triton was back on his feet and his view to Thanatos' bare chest was obscured by the dark fabric of the shirt he was wearing.
Walking along, Triton found Thanatos very good-looking. Neverming Thanatos getting distracted why he walked by, Triton was one hundred percent distracted by him. 100%! He walked on the edge of the group, lazily spinning his scythe around with his unjured hand. His hair danced in the fast wind and his wing was spread out, blocking the wind. He didn't even pay attention to what he was doing, holding conversations with the others instead.
Triton on the other hand, was not holding a conversation. For one simple reason, he couldn't focus.
Call him an idiot and he'll tell you that it's true.
Kym stopped, "We're here."
Triton nearly fell into one of the cracks in the ground, but Thanatos caught his arm as he stared up at the great building. It was the only one untouched by the chaos surrounding them.
The Olympian throne room.
