Chapter Twelve

One year later

"Hey handsome," Triton said appearing beside Thanatos on the coast of the River of Fire. He never could remember the name of it and he had figured out a while ago that when Thanatos didn't have to do anything he mostly spent his time here.

Triton of course, decided to use that to his advantage to try and scare the death god every chance he could get. Unfortunately it never worked.

Thanatos offered Triton his hand and pulled him up beside him, "Greetings annoyance."

"You know you love me."

"Are you sure?"

Triton gasped dramatically and fell backwards onto the cool surface of the black rock. "You hurt me, I thought we had something!"

Thanatos rolled his eyes and kept his attention on the small ghostly butterfly that fluttered around his fingers. A small smile on his face.

Triton just watched.

He wouldn't admit it but the way Thanatos' hair was hanging loosely in front of his face made Triton melt. The red glow upon his face was simply dreamy. His wings were stretched back so they wouldn't scrap against the rock making him look angelic.

The reason he wouldn't admit that is because he has siblings.

Also he doesn't want to make Thanatos uncomfortable.

He just enjoyed watching him do mundane things like the way one would watch the waves. He made even the simple things such as watching a butterfly look magical.

Or mabye that was the red glow of the river making the butterfly stand out stark and white. Almost translucent yet fully formed.

Triton didn't understand it and he wasn't going to hurt his head thinking about it.

"I have news," Triton said breaking the blissful silence between the two.

Thanatos looked to him and raised an eyebrow, "You do?"

"I'm being used as a messenger, I know tragic."

"Let me guess, you have to tell the vampire personally?"

"Yes," Triton said before realising what Thanatos said. "The vampire being Hades right?"

"Yes the vampire is Hades."

"Then to the vampire we must go." Triton sat up and watched as Thanatos stood up.

Thanatos went to offer his hand before his eyes trailed to Triton's tails, still trailing water in the river. "You might need legs if you plan to walk."

Triton gave him a cheeky grin, "I don't plan on walking."

"Do you want me to carry you?"

Triton inwardly celebrated but didn't let it show. "That would be preferred."

Thanatos lifted Triton up as if he weighed nothing... before dropping him into a chariot filled with water.

"Thats too bad then," Thanatos said mirroring his grin from earlier.

It took Triton a moment to process what had just happened.

That moment was all Thanatos needed to get a shadow to start pulling the chariot along. Thanatos stayed walking beside.

Triton pulled his tails fully into the chariot only just noticing the back that stopped the water from pouring out. He wondered how long Thanatos had wanted to do that.

Finally he just leaned back against the 'front' of the chariot, "This is a betrayal angel."

Thanatos hopped onto the back of the chariot (apparently there was enough room for him to stand there, not that Triton cared) and leaned over him, his hands on the sides. "Is that so?"

Triton died.

Figuratively, not literally.

There was a guy leaning over him.

There was a hot guy leaning over him.

There was a very hot guy leaning over him, smirking down at him.

And his hair was still hanging down in front of his face.

For Tethys' sake.

Triton was convinced that Thanatos looked that good on purpose but knowing him he probably didn't even realise.

Triton looked to the side and crossed his arms and prayed to the fates' ugly scarves that he wasn't blushing.

"Yes that is so."

"Hmm, are you sure?"

Triton didn't know if he wanted to punch or kiss him. Maybe both.

"Very sure."

"If you say so," Thanatos said and jumped off the chariot.

Since Triton had his head below the edge he couldn't see where Thanatos went.

He slightly panicked before remembering that he was in the Underworld. The place where people loved to try scare each other for some reason.

Sociopaths.

The lot of them.

The shadow kept on slowly pulling the chariot forward. Triton moved about to try and get comfortable since he had been unceremoniously dropped in. It was not very comfortable. He struggled for a moment since the chariot was quite small and obviously not built for a merman to be able to comfortably swim about.

Once he'd got his tails to circle around the base of the chariot he let himself lean back against one of the four walls. He couldn't be bothered to check which one.

The water rocked back and forward from Triton moving about which caused the chariot to creak and tilt to the side.

Eventually the chariot stilled. Before lurching to one side violently.

Triton let loose a string of curse words as he held onto the side to avoid being dumped onto the ground.

A familiar shadow cast over him and he glared up at the angel.

Thanatos grinned down at him, "You're cute when you're angry."

Triton rolled his eyes, "I'd love to see if you'd say the same thing with a trident sticking out of your skull."

"Are you even tall enough to reach my head?"

Sensing a challenge Tri instantly imagined himself with legs and summoned his trident. He willed for the temperature of the water to increase and evaporated with the water.

He appeared behind Thanatos with his trident aimed at his head. He tapped the dark haired god with the tip, "See I can reach your head."

The other god turned around to face him. Looking down at him with a blank expression.

They stayed locked in a stare. Neither looking away nor moving.

Triton remembered how Persephone had told him and Kym not tk try and fight Thanatos. That it would be asking to be embarrassed. Funny that Triton only remembered that just after he had challenged the god. Maybe it was just Thanatos' siblings -aka the Fates- screwing with him. He wouldn't be surprised.

After a moment Thanatos grinned. Evaporating into smoke.

Oh no.

"Nice trick with the water," Thanatos' disembodied voice said. Coming at him from all angles. "Very original."

Triton was suddenly painfully aware that he had never seen the death god fight and wasn't even aware of the extent of his powers. The closest he had seen to him fighting was him encasing Hercales in smoke.

"Show yourself."

The Underworld seemed darker. Quickly dimming each second. Triton couldn't see his surroundings. He was only able to sense the whereabouts of things by the water that still hung in the air.

An arm leaned on Triton's shoulder. "Sure."

Triton spun and struck the air where the god should have been.

Thanatos was at his other side. "Wow you missed and by a lot."

Triton struck again. He missed.

Thanatos tutted, walking leisurely around him in a circle.

Triton tried again. Again. Again. He missed everytime.

Triton groaned and got into a defensive stance. If he couldn't get to Thanatos, then Thanatos would have to come to him.

He seperated his feet. Planting them firmly into the ground. Having legs still felt off to him. It felt wrong after so long of having tails. He held his trident in front of him. Pointed up.

Thanatos stood in front of him. Wings fading into the smoke around them. He opened his arms, a direct invitation to attack. When he spoke his voice still came at Triton from all angles. "Not bad for someone that hasn't used legs in millenia."

"What can I say? Their boring."

Thanatos smiled at him, "Yet you still can't get a hit."

"You come to me then?"

"Alright."

Triton quickly learnt that Thanatos did not leave time to get a breather. He was ducking and side-stepping every second so he would be missed by the sword.

Where the sword came from, Triton had no clue. One moment Thanatos was standing 5 foot away. The next Triton had to duck to avoid decapitation. The sword was like his wings, shifting between solid and smoke. When Triton attempted to strike the weapon out of the other gods hands it just passed right through. The fog split in two where it travelled.

Triton was slightly panicking. Not daring to even take a second to look away. Not that it helped. Thanatos kept appearing behind him or at his unguarded side.

Triton twirled to the side and raised his trident. Blocking the sword from making contact with him. Thanatos looked him dead in the eye and grinned. Pushing harder and forcing Triton down onto one knee. He knocked the trident to one side, ripping the sword free.

Triton had no time to react before the smooth metal of the sword was against his neck. The ice cold metal trailed along his neck, up to his jawline. Tilting his face upwards to look at Thanatos.

Thanatos tilted his head slightly to the side, "Do you yeild?"

Triton said nothing. The flat of the sword against his skin got colder. The skin went numb, "Fine I yeild."

The sword vanished. Thanatos offered his hand.

Triton let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding in. He grabbed Thanatos' hand and let the god pull him up.

He crashed into his chest, causing the god to take a step back. His hand went to Triton's back and Triton instinctively grabbed hold of his arms.

They both froze.

Triton didn't know if the angel froze for the same reason as him but Triton was internally screaming.

They were alone.

They were holding each other.

They were alone and holding each other.

Triton was far too gay and far too tired for this. Never mind the fact that the other god had stood over him while tilting his chin up with a sword. He still hadn't processed that.

"Are- uh are you ok?" Thanatos asked awkwardly.

"Hmm yeah yeah yup."

You messed that up, Triton thought.

I know, shut up, the other half of Triton replied.

They fell into silence again, just staring into each others eyes.

"Are you going to walk now?"

Triton grinned, "Nope." He looped his arms around Thanatos' neck.

"What what are you going to to do th-then?"

Instead of replying Triton used the angels shoulders to help himself to jump up and wrap his new torture pins - sorry legs - around Thanatos' waist.

Thanatos stopped functioning momentarily.

Triton just looked down at him (he was actually taller than him now), "I'm not walking."

"Why?"

"I don't like walking."

"Fine but get down."

"I'm not going in that puddle either." Triton gestured to the chariot.

"I didn't mean that, but I can't fly holding you like this. So get down."

Triton didn't realise what he said before getting down. The angel knelt down and lifted him up like a damsel in distress. Triton looped his arms around the angels' neck. "Wait fly."

Thanatos didn't say anything but Triton watched as his wings spread to their full length. Then they lifted off the ground.

It was fast.

The wind whistled.

It was terrifying.

It was high.

Very very high.

Triton clutched tighter and started cursing. Slipping into Ocanoc at some point.

It was over as quickly as it started.

Thanatos stood there not phased. Triton clung onto him desperately, his head buried against the angels neck.

"Did you not like the flight?"

Triton took a deep breath, "I'm a fish  angel, I'm not meant to fly."

"I'm meant to fly and you see me having to be a fish everytime we're underwater."

"That was fast."

"Thanks I think. Also we're here so you kind of have to let go."

"No."

Thanatos dropped one of his arms, probably expecting Triton to fall. He underestimated that Triton was holding onto him as if life and death. He was not letting go. He moved himself so that he was in the position that he was in before- wrapped around the death god like an octopus.

"Uh Tri?"

Triton hummed and squeezed him tighter.

"Just a warning my family is going to be here too, so you wouldn't want them to see a weakness."

"I'm not showing weakness, I'm just cold. You're warm."

"I'm death. You're in the Underworld. It's not going to be warm."

"Still doesn't change that I'm cold."

"Tri we have to go in."

"Go ahead I won't stop you."

Thanatos went quiet for a moment. Triton pulled back to see his face.

"Have you ever seen the sunrise-"

"I've seen the sunrise millions of times. I live underwater not under a rock."

"I wasn't finished. Have you ever seen the sunrise over mount Oryths?"

"Eh no."

"If you get down I'll take you there to see it."

"So a date then?" Triton said a little hopefully.

"I suppose."

"Alright." Triton got down and gestured to the palace. "Lead the way."
