Chapter Six
Triton was waking up to two people arguing. Still resting against the chest that he had fallen unconscious on.
"Thanatos why in Gaea's canyons did you do that? You just latched that part back on!" an annoyed voice said, telling Triton that this Thanatos was an idiot and it wasn't their first time messing up.
"Well maybe if someone actually made sense for once, we wouldn't have had this problem," said the familiar voice of the angel, apparently his name was Thanatos.
"Oh so this is my fault?"
"Do you see anybody else here genius?"
"There is the merman, or did you just forget about him?"
"Tri doesn't count because he's unconscious."
Triton couldn't help himself, "Try that again." His voice didn't hurt as much now. The feeling had returned in his tails and he felt rested, which was certainly a surprise.
His hearing was definitely top noch because the other man had let loose a high pitched scream. The one whose chest Triton was against froze.
"You're awake?" said the angel- Thanatos.
Triton didn't even want to open his eyes, he didn't have to. "Oh really, I hadn't noticed."
The other man groaned, "Yeah he's definitely awake."
"Are you not the one that was looking him to wake up?" Thanatos questioned.
"I didn't realise he would talk!"
"Its not like he would just sit there while you took the trap off!"
"I'm still here you know," Triton said drawing attention back to himself.
"No shush," said the man who Triton still didn't know the name of.
Triton tilted his head up and opened his eyes to look up at Thanatos. "Angel can you tell the mean man to shut up?"
Thanatos grinned, "Yes Hades, shut up."
Triton froze for a second when he heard the name Hades. Usually the only time he hears that name is when his father is complaining about his older brother.
Hades saw Triton's reaction, "You know of me?"
"I've heard you mentioned a few times."
"All good things I hope."
Triton made a face, trying to think of the best way to tell the Lord of the Underworld that they were very rarely good things. "Depends, do you count being called 'a pale ass vampire, who could blind people with his stick arms' a compliment?"
Triton watched his reaction which was quite funny. Made even funnier by the striking resemblance to his father.
"You are definitely your fathers son and that isn't a good thing," Hades said after a beat.
Triton just grinned at his uncle, choosing to ignore the numbness that was starting to affect his tail again.
He rested his head back down against the angel. Hoping that since his uncle was there that nothing would happen to him. From what he knew Hades and his father were quite close, drawn together by their mutual dislike of their younger brother, Zeus.
Hades was nothing like Zeus. He wasn't brash and didn't need attention 24/7 to survive. Hades was quiet, silently protective and quite judging, however he wouldn't outright say something to someones face unless he was comfortable around them. When Triton had seen him underwater he frequently told Poseidon that he was an idiot, only getting an eyeroll in response.
He had quickly become Kym's favourite. No surprise there. Anyone that insulted Poseidon to his face was high on Kym's favourite people list.
"Tri, Tri," Thanatos said frantically.
Triton hummed.
"Stay awake, okay? Can you do that for me?"
Triton couldn't feel anything again. His body just wanted to sleep and Triton was caving to that desire.
There was some more murmuring, the words blending together.
His mind drifted away as he once again fell unconscious.

Thanatos felt helpless as he felt Tri fall slack against him. He looked over to Hades, seeing that the God of the Underworld had finished removing the trap while Thanatos was trying to get Tri to stay awake.
"What should we do now?" Thanatos asked. They couldn't just leave Tri here incase Hercales or another god came down and- no Thanatos wouldn't think about what could happen.
They also couldn't just take him with them. He was a merman for Erebus' sake, he needs water and unless he wanted to swim in the Styx or any other underworld lake there was nowhere for him to stay.
Hades of course, wasn't bothered, "Hold him for a second."
The paler god stood up and summoned a shining bone before throwing it into the ocean. Seconds later a man with green tinted skin stood before them holding the bone. An unamused expression on his face.
Hades grinned, "Good boy."
The man threw the bone at Hades's robes where it melted in with the souls of the damned.
"What do you want Hades?" the man said.
"Is that anyway to speak to your older brother?"
Must be Poseidon then, Thanatos thought, silently watching the exchange between the two.
It definitely wouldn't be Zeus as Hades didn't hesitate to call upon his brother. Also the fact that the bone was thrown into the sea was a hint.
"That isn't answering the question," the gods eyes darted around, taking everything in. "Who is that?" the sea gods eyes rested on Thanatos and Tri. More specifically on Thanatos.
"This is Thanatos, say hello Thanatos," Hades said.
"Hello," Thanatos said with a timid wave.
Poseidon just nodded before checking Tri. Thanatos might have imagined it but there was concern in his eyes as he looked at the merman.
"What happened?" his eyes fell down to the dismantled trap. There was a silent fury in the gods eyes as he checked over Tri again. "Who was it?"
Hades and Thanatos shared a quick look.
The sea god was seething, "Who hurt him?"
Hades put his hands on Poseidons' shoulders, "Poseidon look at me, breathe with me. Let Thanatos tell you what happened. Just breathe, yeah thats it, just breathe with me."
Poseidon locked eyes with Hades, anger still danced behind his eyes mimicked by the sea behind him. However he was listening to his brother. As Hades talked on the sea stopped raging with unchecked anger. Soon the waves were controlled, still rather violent but calmer than it was before.
"Who hurt him?" Poseidon asked again, calmer this time. "Who owned that trap?"
Hades sent Thanatos a look to tell him to start talking quickly before looking back to Poseidon.
"Hercales," Thanatos blurted out. "Hercales set the trap."
A look of annoyance flashed across Poseidon's face at the mention of his nephew.
"He wasn't able to do anything to, I got him away from there before he could," Thanatos finished.
"Thank you, the sea owes you a dept."
"You really do not, that was me paying off a dept to Tri. Even if I wasn't I would not want anything in return."
Poseidon looked down at him confused, "Are you sure you do not want anything?"
Thanatos nodded, "I'm sure."
By now Thanatos noticed heads peaking above the water. Most watching him, some glancing between him and Poseidon. He saw Tri's brother and sister. The mermaid that dragged him under was also there.
Thanatos felt slightly uncomfortable with all the attention. He never was one that liked being in the spotlight. Preferring to stay to the shadows, only coming out to collect the souls of the deceased.
One merman called out in the strange language that all under the sea seemed to speak.
Poseidon answered back in the same language and the merfolk that had been glaring or looking at him warily had changed. They now all looked at him confused.
That was worse.
Thanatos was always looked at with confused looks. Whispering behind his back 'that's the god of death!' Confused about why he would show his face. Confused about why death is among the gods that claim to protect life.
He hated it.
They were all hypocrites. They claimed to protect and cherish life, yet they were the leading cause of all death.
Thanatos doesn't choose when a life ends, thats what the fates do. He just collects the soul. Splits the soul from the body. If a soul is left tethered to a place for too long then it won't be able to leave. Destruction of the tether would result in destruction of the soul.
Thanatos' job, as Tri said, is a necessity. Without death the gods would complain about no 'mortals dying', everyone would be immortal. Yet with death they complain about the mortals dying too quickly.
There is a very clear divide between all gods and living beings.
The sky.
The sea.
The underworld.
Olympus.
Atlantis.
Erebus.
Zeus.
Poseidon.
Hades.
The divide that always was and always will be. The divide that started with the gods. Specifically the big three. Hades was banished to the underworld. Poseidon was cast out to the sea. Zeus ruling above all others in the 'Council' which is really just Zeus threatening all to agree with him or else their immortality is stripped away.
Thanatos wanted away from the attention.
He gently lay Tri down on the rock. "Right so I'm going to go, theirs some souls in France and Italy I need to get."
With that his form collapsed into smoke.
Hades, Poseidon and the merfolk all stared at the spot that he had disappeared in.
Poseidon began speaking, voicing his thoughts, "Did he leave because my people are here?"
Hades raised an eyebrow at his younger brother. "Thanatos has never been one for attention, he keeps to himself."
"Are you sure that he did not flee because of my people?"
"I am completely sure, Thanatos is one of those ones that tries to please others, all whilst staying out of sight as much as possible. He would not want to discriminate against your people," Hades reassured his brother. "So what is this I hear about the sea becoming more violent? More shipwrecks than usual."
Poseidon glanced out at the merfolk who were listening to the conversation and grinned. "I think it is time things changed."
Hades matched his grin, "Well that is something I am glad to hear."
