Chapter Nine
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"Please."
"No."
"You have to."
"I am not going underwater Persephone!"
"But Thanatosssss," the goddess whined, drawing out the 's' at the end of his name.
"No."
Persephone stomped her foot on the ground, "Hades you try."
Hades didn't look up from his cup of tea, "Thanatos stop annoying Persephone."
"I'm not going underwater."
"Yes you will," Persephone sang.
"No I won't."
"Yes."
"No."
"Your wings won't get wet," Persephone pointed out.
"I don't understand why I have to go, Hades is meeting up with Poseidon also I have a job. So no, I will not go."
Persephone grabbed Thanatos' hands and started doing a mini dance to try encourage the god to agree with her. "You should take a day off, let the mortals think they got a miracle."
Thanatos stood their with Persephone moving his arms, "You know can't do that."
"Yes you can! They'll just think whatever god they believe in is smiling down at them."
Thanatos arched a brow, "While I would actually be doing what?"
"Partying!"
"No."
"Alright it won't be a party but a gathering."
Thanatos slipped his hands out of Persephones, "Persephone, I don't want to talk to anyone I don't know. You know I can't do that."
"That's true," Hades butted in. "He froze up when Poseidon tried talking to him." He pointed at Thanatos, "Then I had to explain that you were just shy not racist when you ran."
Thanatos crossed his arms, "In my defense there was a lot of beings there and I was not mentally prepared for social interaction."
Persephone hugged Thanatos' arm and looked up and him, "It's not until tomorrow, that would be enough time to prepare yourself."
Thanatos sighed, the Queen of the Underworld was very stubborn, too bad that Thanatos was equally anti-social. "I don't want to be around or speak with beings I don't know."
"I'll stay with you the whole time, please. I'll need company," Persephone pleaded.
"You'll have Hades."
Hades looked up from his mug, "Yes? I heard my name."
Persephone ignored her husband while Thanatos ignored the god as per usual.
"Hades will be talking to Poseidon about politics and running kingdoms and other boring stuff."
"Persephone you run a kingdom," Thanatos pointed out.
Persephone flicked her hair over her shoulder. Her hair was down so she could wear a flower crown of black roses. "Yes but I prefer to do it with style."
"You mean putting flowers at every corner?"
Persephone waved a hand, "Same thing."
"Right."
"So are you coming?"
"No."
* * *
Persephone held Thanatos' wrist in a death grip. Forcing him to stay at her side while they followed the mermen that led them through the castle.
The whole this was rather anticlimactic until they heard a crash.
"I WILL MURDER YOU FEATHERS!" a feminine voice screamed in perfect greek.
Another voice yelled back, "TRY ME BLUES."
There was another crash and the two mermen that were leading them to the thronw room decided to take a detour. Right in the direction of the crashes.
Thanatos had stayed silent the whole time they were there. He did not like it. First, he was dragged along by a certain goddess of Spring. Secondly, he had to vanish his wings so they wouldn't get wet. Thirdly, Persephone got him to change his hair so that he just had hair on the top. Apparently it was to follow underwater customs of the way they have their hair. He didn't know why, he didn't listen to her when she explained it, but he did know that he liked the way it was. It was in four tight braids that ended tied together so his hair was a pompom at the end. Fourthly, he is underwater. He doesn't mind those that live underwater but he does not like underwater.
It felt weird.
The same way Olympus felt weird. Both, Underwater and Olympus were full of life. Thanatos was the opposite of life.
He was death.
Everything felt off to him. He felt more at home where the dead are buried than where life is born.
Although, he supposed, Underwater is better than Olympus. Beings died here too, rather than the whole 'We protect life' on Olympus the Sea admitted that they were a cause of death.
Persephone dragged Thanatos out of his thoughts with a tug forward.
They were still following the two mermen who were conversing in the language of the Sea.
Thanatos was told that they would be given bracelets that would allow them to understand the language. But they would need someone to translate if they wanted to converse with a merfil.
Which was fine by him because he wasn't planning on talking to anybody.
"FEATHERS!" yelled the feminine voice again. Maniacal laughter followed.
The mermen reached a curtain a pulled it back to reveal the inside.
There was a red skinned merfil with a shocking bright red colour of hair doubled over laughing. A black haired mermaid holding a sharp disk glaring around the room. A merman with white feathered wings using a familiar blue haired merman as a sheild. Hiding from the angered mermaid.
The blue haired merman tried to swim away from the one holding him back but was pulled back.
The blue haired merman turned his head to say something in the feathered mermans ear which caused him to instantly let go of him.
The mermaid sropping glaring at the exposed merman to face the escapee instead, "What did you say to him Tri?"
Tri grinned and swam forward to whisper in her ear.
The mermaid dropped her disk, "No."
"Yes!" Tri said happily.
The merfil said something quickly in the other language and Tri replied in the same tongue. The merfil's jaw dropped and they swam over to Tri. Saying something in his ear to which he nodded. They squealed and the mermaid grabbed her disk and threw it towards the duo.
The red merdil instantly pushed Tri into the path of the disk.
Tri rolled his eyes at the fact that once again, he was being used as a sheild. Not batting an eye at the deadly disk speeding towards him.
Persephone let out a small cry and tried to swim forward but she was unused to the tail that she had donned for the event.
The four beings in the room and instantly looked to where the noise came from.
Tri quickly looked back to the disk. He moved slightly to the side and let the disk slide over his palm. The red scaled merfil ducked down as Tri spun around. Redirecting the disk back at the mermaid who threw it.
She ducked. Not expecting the disk to come back. She looked back at the disk embedded in the wall before launching off intoa cursing spell.
"Seriously Tri? You vould have cut my head off like a wee Olympu-pu! You whale licker!" she started before Tri interupted.
"And I'd do it again."
The red merfil said something in the Sea language.
The mermaid looked ready to throw her disk again but she had a problem. She didn't have the disk. The feathered merman had taken it and was currently swimming away with it. So she yelled instead, "SHUT UP KORIGAN!"
Korigan just stuck their tongue out at the goddess.
One of the two mermen that was supposed to escort Hades, Perswphoen and Thanatos to the throne room cleared his throat. The attention of the four beings was drawn to them again. He said something in the language and gestured behind him at the three Underworld dwelling gods.
Persephone gave them a small wave. Korigan returned the gesture.
The mermaid composed herself before speaking, "I'm assuming that you three are the Underworld dwellers."
"Yes we are, I am Hades, this is my wife Persephone and this is Thanatos."
The mermaid replied for them all, "I am Kymopoleia, the one with the wings is Anteros. The red one is Korigan and the other one is Triton."
Triton made a face, "I can feel the love."
Kymopoleia made a gesture with her hand that Thanatos guessed was the equivalent to a middle finger. "Surprising because I don't feel any."
Anteros groaned and slammed his head against a wall, "We get it Kym you're aro. Can you stop making that joke now?"
"Can you stop simping over your coworker?"
"No."
"Then I will not stop joking about my sexuality."
Thanatos had a sneaking suspicion that the two merfolk had forgotten that they were there.
Triton had swam over to them, Korigan in tow. "Can I ask why you are here?" he directed at Thanatos.
"I was forced to come by Persephone."
"Ah." His eyes darted down to where Persephone was still holding his wrist.
Korigan said something to Thanatos that he couldn't answer. It was in the other language.
Thanatos had no idea what to say, should he say that he doesn't understand but then that might be rude. But if he doesn't say anything that would be even ruder.
"Do you not understand what they said?" Tri asked him.
"No, sorry."
Tri tilted his head to the side and looked back down at his wrist which was being held captive by the Queen of the Underworld. Then he faced Persephone, "Do you or your husband understand Ocanoc?"
"No we don't," Persephone said.
Triton turned to one of the mermen and spoke in the other language. They both bowed their heads before swimming off.
Korigan repeated their question but this time Triton translated, "Are you a guy or a girl or non-binary?"
"Um guy? I've never really thought about it," Thanatos said.
Korigan then turned to Persephone and Persephone told the merfil that she was a goddess. (Triton explained that Korigan could understand Greek but couldn't speak it well).
They repeated it again with Hades and by the time that Hades said that he was a god the two mermen had returned with three bracelets. They gave one to each of them and they slipped them onto their wrists.
The braclets were thin strips of braided kelp with a small pink flowers blooming in random parts.
Thanatos looked at the flowers before looking up at Persephone who wore a small smile. A mischievous glint in her eye. She reached out and placed a hand on Hades' arm. He turned to face her and she blew into his face. Instantly kelp with pink flowers grew around him in heaps.
Korigan and Kymopoleia snorted and Tri was fighting a grin. Thanatos openly laughed at the expression on Hades' face.
Maybe this event could be amusing.
