Chapter Fifteen
Thanatos felt Tritons breathing slow down as he hugged his torso.
The death god looked down at him, seeing the quite pleasing visage of a sleeping Triton. He gently kissed the top of his head.
Tri hummed and snuggled closer against him. Pressing his face against Thanatos' neck.
The god couldn't help but smile. The merman really was quite touchy. He had thought that it was an act when he didn't know Tri particularly well but now he was convinced.
Tri was extremely hug-y.
And for some reason cold a lot.
Thanatos didn't care why nor did he mind. He got to hug the smaller god a lot.
His family wasn't exactly the affection showing type. The closest you could get to a hug with them would be in a headlock. He had grown up thinking that was how all families were. Disfunctional, confusing, violent and dramatic. All siblings fighting over everything. All of them brilliant fighters because of the constant need to stay vigilant. To stay focused. Half in and half out of touch with everything. Expecting an attack from every side while still concentrating on the matters at hand.
Thanatos had grown up in Tartarus, during the time of the Titans.
Being in Tartarus alone is no piece of cake. Even while being a god. If you could even call him a god. His mother is a Primordial, two of his siblings are also Primordials. He was born at the time of the Titans, yet he calls himself a god.
Thanatos preferred not to think about it. He would just identify as whatever deities ruled over the supernatural world at the time. Now it was the gods so a god Thanatos would call himself. It was easier that way. Instead of being constantly confused over what he is. Erebus some might even call Thanatos a Primordial.
He was about to wake Tri but then he hesitated. His hand centimetres away from Tritons shoulder.
Maybe he shouldn't wake him up. If he fell asleep then he must be tired, but they couldn't really stay here because monsters would come out. They usually do at night. They wouldn't bother Thanatos as he was of the Underworld, just like them. Tri was not. They would bother Tri.
But Thanatos could take him somewhere so that he could sleep. Then Thanatos would look like a creep that took people when they slept.
However sometimes he did do that. Wait wait not in a creept way some people do die in their sleep you know.
Thanatos finally decided he would wake Tri up to ask if he could take him somewhere so that he could sleep in peace. He tapped the gods neck lightly, but just enough that he would feel it.
Triton groaned and went to smack Thanatos' hand away but missed, by quite a bit. He ended up slapping himself in the face.
Thanatos smiled, "Do you want to go somewhere else so you can sleep?"
"Hmmm?"
"Do you want to go somewhere so you can sleep? Monsters vome out here at night."
"Sleep? Yes. Walk? No."
"I'll carry you."
"You could do much more to me if you wanted to," Tri mumbled.
Thanatos froze for a second, then he (metaphorically) shrugged the comment off. Imagining that it was just Tri messing with him.
He put his free arm under the mermans legs and double checked that his other arm was holding the other god right. That he wouldn't end up dropping him. Once he was sure that it was alright he moved slightly so that he was on one knee while still holding the sleeping god bridal style. He gently stood up and willed the shadows to take them back to the Underworld.
When he opened his eyes again they were in Thanatos' room. He stumbled over to the bed, his leg decided to act dead from being still for so long.
However he did manage not to fall. He counted that as a success.
His wings faded into air as he set Tri down onto the bed.
He was going to leave Tri there and leave a note for him so that he wouldn't panic when he woke up. That way he could go collect souls and still have piece of mind that the merman was safe.
Triton had different plans.
He wouldn't let go.
Triton had his back facing the bed. He could have easily just fell back onto the bed, but he would not let go of Thanatos' neck.
"Tri, let go," Thanatos whispered.
"No, you're mine."
"I'll be back in a second?"
"No."
"Please?"
"No."
"Pretty please?"
At that moment Triton swung one of his legs down and hit Thanatos' own leg. The one that had been acting dead.
They both fell down onto the bed. Thanatos on top of Triton. The annoying merman must have been faking being asleep because he flipped them over so that he was on top. Legs on both sides of Thanatos and leaning over him.
Thanatos tried one last time, "Please can I go? I will come back."
Tritons face didn't betray a single emotion nor did his eyes. "No, you are mine," he tapped Thanatos' chest with each word. Then he flashed Thanatos a tired grin, "Besides you'd forget to come back."
Without warning he dropped himself on top if Thanatos. Effectively stopping him from walking away while still getting comfortable enough to sleep. But knowing Triton he could sleep anywhere but he was just making sure that Thanatos couldn't move.
Thanatos let his head fall back onto the pillow. "I really do have to go."
"Hold it in, I'm not losing my pillow."
"Not like that idiot-"
"Says you."
"At least I admit it, I have to go get some souls."
Triton stayed silent for a second making Thanatos think that he had fallen asleep.
"Get someone else to do it."
"What?"
"Get someone else to do it," Triton repeated.
"I can't, I had to do it all because the others wouldn't do it."
"Then its not your fault if a bunch of souls get lost."
"It kind of would be."
"No," Tri said with finality. "It wouldn't because you need a break too."
"But-"
"No butts unless you're talking about mine. Shut up and go to sleep."
"Yes sir."
Triton smirked against his neck, before he slid a hand underneath Thanatos. His breathing steading once again while Thanatos' mind raced.
What?
What?
What?
He had no idea what was going on.
He usually doesn't but this time he was even more confused than normal.
Triton still lay fully on top of him. Instead of both legs at either side of him now, the Sea god had shifted so that one leg was along Thanatos' own leg, the other in between his legs. One hand underneath him, the other rested on his arm. His torso was still mostly on top of Thanatos.
He kind of liked it.
Ok thats a lie.
He liked it a lot. A lot, a lot.
Whenever he thought of the Sea god he felt weird. It felt like he was flying, fluttery. Like he said, weird.
He didn't know what it was, maybe he was happy that Triton was his friend. He hadn't really had a proper friend before apart from Persephone and Hades. But they were rather reserved too, especially Hades. Tri wasn't. Thanatos didn't know if 'friends' were this comfortable around each other.
He wasn't about to complain though.
Instead of continuing to think, he got comfortable and fell asleep.
* * *
They were all in a meeting in the Underworld. Hades kept looking at Poseidon then laughing.
Poseidon was trying to act profession but it was clear that Hades was getting to him. Eventually he snapped, "Whats so funny?"
"Oh nothing, just thought you might be a little stuck."
"Stuck in what?"
"I'm not sure but you seem like the time to get stuck in your own trap."
Thanatos rolled his eyes. He made eye contact with Triton by accident who then stuck his tongue out at him.
Poseidon turned to his kids who all started acting shocked that Hades knew about the trap incident.
"Which of you told him?"
Amphitrite grinned, "Oh shut your trap, Poseidon."
Poseidon gaped at his wife.
Amphitrite turned to face Hades and Persephone, "We were thinking that we should start laying the traps soon and position merfolk near them. So if a god-"
Kym cleared her throat.
Amphitrite continued, "-or a goddess gets trapped they can only blame their own greed."
Anteros raised his hand, "Or lust."
"Yes Anteros, they can only blame their greed or lust for them getting caught." Amphitrite looked at all of their faces and stopped when she got to Thanatos. "You don't seem surprised to hear this."
"I heard it from Triton," Thanatos said. "And my family have all agreed that its a good time to start."
"How are they?" Amphitrite asked.
"Annoying."
"I meant how are they doing?"
"Oh, that," Thanatos said. "I don't know, I try to avoid them."
"Are they well?"
"I really don't care, if it shuts them up then its a miracle."
"Are they alive?" Amphitrite asked after a few seconds of allowing Kym to laugh into her hand.
"Unfortunately."
Triton grinned and shook his head. Kym snorted loudly, Anteros wacked her across the back of the head.
Thanatos vaguely wondered why he was getting so many questions.
Poseidon finally spoke up after staring at his wife for a few minutes, "We should start now, we were just letting you know."
Persephone grinned, "Are you trying to get two out of three in a trap?"
"Will you let that go already?"
The King and Queen of the Underworld said in unison, "Never."
