Chapter Eighteen

Triton was swimming past the hostage building when he decided to go in. Just to see how many gods had been stupid enough to go near the water when their own gods had been disappearing.

As soon as he went in he could see another one being brought in.

"I see no one has turned you into a meal then," Electra snarled.

For some reason the bindings they were using were getting low in storage so they had to sacrifice the parts that were covering their mouths. Which meant dealing with the remarks of Electra and one of the other ones that they got down there. Triton didn't recognise them, short cropped hair, dark beard, sharp nose. But they kept spitting out insults that weren't really any good.

Triton didn't spare the goddess a glance, "Can't say I'd blame them if they tried. After all I am a snack."

Korigan, who had been bringing the lastest one in, laughed.

"Shut up sirens, once the other gods break us out I'll personally cut your heads off," Mr insult-wanna be of the land spat out.

All the merfolk in the area froze and turned to the offending god.

Triton actually turned around at that one, "And who are you going to kill exactly?"

"You," snarled the god.

"Hmm, and who are you? I'd like to know the name of the one who think they can kill me," Triton said, swimming closer.

"Deimos, the name is Deimos. God of Terror."

"Well Deimos, you won't be able to kill me," Triton said, slowly swimming around the god. He raised the gods chin up, "A lot worse than you have tried."

Triton began to swim away.

Deimos thrashed in his bindings to no avail. "Who do you think you are?"

Triton only turned his head back, "Does the name Pallas ring a bell?"

After a moment of silence Deimos' snarl fell away, the colour faded from his face. "Triton."

Triton gave him a cold grin, "Oh look, you do know me." He didn't look back again, just kept on swimming away. He was done there, he had only wanted to see how it was going anyway. But now they knew who he was and he didn't recognise many of them, only one or two. That also meant they were all younger than him. Most gods were but the one that were born after that after Athena made herself an enemy of the Sea all knew the tale.

Triton didn't like to think of it much.

His daughter, Pallas and Athena were good friends. They always fought for training, always said they would never hurt one another. But on that day, Pallas was distracted, why shouldn't she be? She had just gotten word that her cousin- a child of Anteros had died. She had been close with them. So she was distracted, Athena had offered her a spar to help take her mind off it. Athena knew she was distracted and still struck her with full force at a weak point in her armour. A fatal strike. Between two ribs. Close to the heart. Pallas died slowly and painfully all because of Athena, a goddess that she had put her trust in. Only to be struck down when she was grieving.

Most of the gods now would probably know Triton had reacted rather than what had happened. They were probably told that Pallas had attacked Athena too much and Athena had sttuck out in panic, accidentally killing the demigod. That was a lie. But what they had most likely been told about what happened afterwards was true. When Athena had called on Triton and told him what happened. He had acted out of grief and rage. He sunk the island without a care for any beings living on it and created an earthquake powerful enough to be felt across the opposite end of the world.

He regretted how he had acted. The knowledge of that probably also played a part in the outcast of the Sea.

It scared him. It didn't even seem like that much when he had done it. It was just angry that his daughter was dead. Even more angry that it was Athena who had killed her by attacking full force when the demigod was distracted. He only found out the extent of what he had done a few days later. He had killed hundreds of beings. All in one go. Caused more pain and sorrow than he had felt. None of the other beings experiencing that had reacted like he had. So why then, should he not fell guilt? He deserved it for the pain he caused.

Pontus' hairy back even the god of terror was afraid of him.

That most likely was not a good thing. Who was he kidding of course it wasn't a good thing.

Kymopoleia swam up beside him where he had sat down ina sunken ship wreck. "Drachma for your thoughts?"

"I was thinking about Pallas again," Triton said sullenly.

Kym nodded in understanding, "About Pallas herself or what happened afterwards?"

"Afterwards."

Kym placed her disk in front of them so that the smooth surface faced them. She tapped it and it shimmered to show the island that no longer existed. "It's not your fault-"

"Yes it is," Triton said cutting her off.

"Yes and no. Yes because you did it, no because something like that was bound to happen. You bottle everything up Tri, you never release what you're feeling. If that island had never been sunk then you never would have let everything out. If something pushed you over the edge after that it would have been worse," Kym said.

"That doesn't sound like you, it sounds smart," Triton said trying to get away from the topic with a joke.

"You're doing it again."

"Doing what?"

"Trying to change the topic with a joke."

"I can't help it I am a joke, so are you."

"Shut up idiot," Kym said shaking her head with a small smile. "Also it sounds smart because I constantly make storms. I actually let it out, you do not-" she poked him in the face. "-make a storm or cause a shipwreck or something."

"I'm sad because I killed mortals before and now you're trying to get me to kill more?"

"Excuse you we are helping the planet, mortals are increasing in number which ruins the air. They'll die more too since theres more and they put their dead into the ground now which ruins the ground. At least if they die at Sea then we are helping keep Gaea asleep and not throwing a fit."

Triton cracked a smile, "Would that be her letting her feelings out?"

"Yes it would which is healthy. Now go cause some chaos darling brother,"Kym said before moving to swim off.

"What will you be doing?"

"I have a date."

"Of course you do."

"Hey! What better time to live life than during a war?"

Triton ignored his sister and swam off the other way towards the surface. Maybe his sister was right, he should make a storm.

Don't ever tell Kym that he said that.

Thanatos started flying out to the Sea which he had been doing a lot. But this time it was work related. A shipwreck. It felt like so long ago since he had done a proper shipwreck.

Once he arrived the wind instantly battered him back. No matter what he tried he couldn't get past.

So the god waited for the storm to end. This one was huge, far stronget than the ones Kymopoleia usually made. But she had explained that one time, she never makes a full storm because she wants others to underestimate her. Maybe someone had set her off and she was going full on at them. Unlikely but still possible.

The storm grew and Thanatos had to fly back even further. He flew out of the reach from the vicious wind but droplets of water still reached him. He was drenched. His wings were heavy and hurt from trying to stay in the one spot.

The wind slowed for a moment. The calm disappeared as soon as it had begun.

Thanatos only had time to see a lone figure in the middle of it. Dark green tails and messy blue hair. Thanatos would have to have lost his memory not to recognise the merman. Even then he probably would be able to tell who he was.

When it began again it was fiercer and stronger than before. Swellinh past Thanatos in a cyclone of destruction. A wooden ship got dragged in and only a whisper of the screams could be heard.

The water pulled in and Thanatos used that second to fly as high as he could before a monstrous wave crashed right where he had been a second before. The wave reached around in a ring from the center.

Quickly the storm dispersed. The clouds vanished. The howling stopped.

Thanatos ignored the souls and flew toward the rock in the middle with aching wings. He landed before Tri, looking down at the shaking being sitting before him. His tails were curled around himself like a snake.

The winged god was overcome with concern, "Tri?"

The merman didn't look up but Tri watched as his tails became legs. His torso stayed the same. Thanatos never understood why he always did that, gave himself legs but stayed looking like a merman. He always supposed it was because he was just used to it and didn't want to change anything unless necessary.

Thanatos saw the tear tracks down his face as he stood up and he instantly softened. "Come here," he said stepping towards the god with open arms.

Triton fell against him and buried his head in his shoulder. Thanatos held Tri with one arm and rested the other at the back of his neck. Rubbing his thumb at the back of his head able to fell the pickle of the very short hair at the back of his head.

"What happened?" Thanatos asked, trying to keep his voice soft. He was ready to kill whoever had hurt his Tri.

"Memories," Tri mumbled.

Oh, so Thanatos couldn't kill them. Not that he enjoyed killing but he would without question if they hurt Tri.

Thanatos didn't know what to do so he just stayed there, hugging Tri while the other god calmed. Thanatos would stay there all day and night if Tri needed him to.

"Um hi, could you please let me go? I have to deliver a package for about five minutes ago," said a voice behind Tri that caused the two to pull apart.

The two gods recognised the god in front of them, lying on his back, caught in the trap that they hadn't even realised was there.

"Hades' bare ass," Triton whispered at the same time Thanatos murmured, "Poseidon's barnacled brain."

"Cool curses," the god piped up, "Can I go now? But its cool if I can't, I've been needing a day off for a while. Just can't catch a break because no one else wanta to fill in. Actually you know what? Please don't let me go, unless you want to torture me, in that case please let me go I have a family. Hah, if Apollo was here he'd make a joke about a Dom Torreto fellow, bo idea who that is but 'Pollo is alway referencing future stuff without realising that no-one else understands it. Am I rambling again? Sorry but its really quiet and I have the same thing as those demigods I can't remember the word for it but I don't like silences or staying still. Can I stretch my legs a bit? Or maybe not because you might think I'd fly away or even can one of you summon one of those fidgety thingys. Please?"

Thanatos handed over one and despite not being able to use his hands the god was delighted.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you. Sorry I can't tell who you are with you being upside down and all so I can't tell who you are. If we haven't met before which is unlikely because I've met a lot of people but anyway I'm Hermes, the messenger god and god of about three hundred more things for some reason. What's your names?"

The other two stayed silent.

This was big.

They'd caught an Olympian.

This was very big.
