Chapter Eight

The moon hung high in the sky. Waves soothingly lapped against the rock that the crown prince of the Sea sat upon.

It was the first time he had been up to the surface alone since that happened. He hadn't necessarily been harmed but the thought of what could have happened scared him. Since he had scared him that much he probably shouldn't even be above the surface. But he was just so tired. Not physically. He was tired of the pity, tired of the side glances, tired of the conversation stopping when he entered the room.

He was tired of all of it.

No one would even mention it to him nor around him. He knew they were doing it on purpose and it was awful.

So he came to the surface. To be alone.

Don't get him wrong he loved his family, just over the last while they had gotten protective. Always checking up on him every now and again.

It was annoying. Before they had trusted him to be able to take care of himself. Now he had to actually sneak out to be alone.

Triton gazed out at the moonlit ocean, watching the waves dance. It was calming. Triton supposed that being of the Sea made him at peace with the depths.

Triton faintly noticed the sound of someone landing on the rock. He didn't turn around, yet he froze, listening intently to every sound.

"Hello, sorry if I startled you."

Triton sighed in relief, it was just the angel. He turned his head aeound to look up at the god. "Don't worry about it, I've been in edge a lot lately."

Thanatos flashed him a small smile before moving forward to sit beside him.

Triton just simply watched not saying anything.

Thanatos looked over at him, "Any reason why you are out so late?"

"I could ask you the same," Triton said smoothly, feeling at ease with the angel beside him.

"I'm the god of death, can't seem to catch a break. Your turn."

Triton tore his eyes away from the angel and stared out at the waves again. "I just wanted away from everyone."

"Are they giving you a hard time?"

"No not necessarily, they're just being very -" Triton trailed off, trying to remember the word. He could remember it in Ocanoc but not in Greek. Which was incredibly annoying. "I don't know how to say it."

"Just try to say it."

Triton smiled at that, a soft chuckle escaping him, "No I really don't know how to say it, I forgot the word in Greek."

"Do you know how to say it in any other languages?" Thanatos asked.

"Yeah I do, andrianai." Triton frowned before saying the word to himself again. "Andrianai. Andri- it begins with over I think."

"Overprotective?" the other god suggested. "Overwhelming?"

Triton clapped his hands together startling to other god. He turned back to face him smiling widely. "Thats the word!"

"Overwhelming?" Thanatos repeated confused.

"Yes, overwhelming- what were we talking about again?"

Thanatos laughed, "You were saying why you wanted to get away."

Triton shook his head at himself, still smiling like a lunatic. "My family have been quite overwhelming."

Thanatos hummed, "That must be nice."

"Amazing," Triton said sarcastically before realising that Thanatos wasn't kidding. "Do you not get along well with your family?"

"Haven't talked to them in about 20 years."

"Did something happen?"

"No. They can just be a lot sometimes. The triplets are spoilt, the rest fight a lot and my mother is extremely dramatic."

Triton hummed, "On a scale of one to ten with Zeus being 15, how dramatic would she be?"

That earned a laugh from the death god, leaving the merman feeling as if he had accomplished a great feat.

"Maybe around 21 or maybe 22."

"Wow, dramatic."

"Tell me about it."

A silence fell between the two. It wasn't uncomfortable nor awkward.

A harsh wind blew against them and Triton shivered. Thanatos noticed this.

"Are you cold?"

"Freezing," Triton muttered.

"Can I move closer to you?"

Triton gave the other god an odd look, "Sure, go for it."

Thanatos shifted closer to him until their arms were touching and outstretched a wing around Triton. Blocking him off from the wind.

Triton stared, mystified by the dark feathers. They were pitch black, making the dark sky around them look grey. All the feathers tightly packed, effectively blocking all the wind that raged above the surface.

He reached out a hand instinctively to touch the lush feathers before pulling back at the last second. Looking back at Thanatos with a sheepish smile as an apology.

Thanatos smiled at him, "Its ok."

Triton smiled back at him before reaching his hand out yet again and touching his wings. The feathers were soft and smooth under his fingertips. He trailed his hand down the wing, following the direction of the feathers.

"Um Tri?" the angel said hesitantly.

Instantly Triton took his hand away from the feathered wing and snapped his head to the side.

The angel was staring down at his hands resting on his lap, twisting a metal band that sat upon his second non-finned finger. "You probably don't want to talk about it but when the mermaid dragged me down, why did you save me?"

Triton stared at him confused about what mermaid he was talking about. Then he remembered that Thanatos meant Corla.

Sensing his confusion Thanatos quickly explained his words, "Sorry but it had been confusing me since- since last time we spoke."

Tritons eyes bore into him as he realised that even the angel before him was trying to avoid mentioning it. Instead of confronting him on it, Triton decided to answer his question.

"Why wouldn't I?"

"Well I called you a s- that word, so I thought that you would hold a grudge."

"When you are referring to that you can say the word," Triton said dodging around the subject. Truth be told- he had no idea why he had saved Thanatos. Anyother merfil in his place would have just let him die. Triton didn't understand his own mind at times.

"But then I'll feel bad," Thanatos objected.

Triton smirked, "Aww poor wittle Thanatos will feel bad because he said a bad word." Triton ruffled his hair before freezing.

Why the Pontus did I just do that?

He retracted his hand and stared out at the horizon. Rethinking all his life choices and wondering what he had done to piss off the Móraí that they felt the need to embarrass him.

Thanatos was taken back. Freezing in place and staring at Triton.

Kill me now, Triton thought. That would be easier.

The fates were not on his side as Triton didn't dramatically due of mysterious causes a second later. Nor the next second, nor the next. After a few moments of awkward silence Triton gave up on the hope of dying. Ready to live out the rest of his days under the sea, where he would have no chance of meeting the angel again.

"No I would feel bad because its offensive," Thanatos said after an age.

Triton hummed still reeling from what he just did. Who ruffles someones hair? Especially if they barely know them!

"So," Thanatos said slowly, attempting to break the ice. "Why did you do it?"

"Do what?"

"Save me."

"Oh. That." Triton thought to himself for a moment. He would tell the angel the truth. "I don't know, I just saw you there and barely realised what I was doing."

Thanatos shook his head and smiled to himself, "I used to always be terrified of the ocean and merfolk, I still am. But you are actually pretty nice."

"Shush. I've got a reputation," Triton said, grinning as well.

"Reputation of what? A softie?"

"I'll get you back for that."

"Oh no, please don't splash me with water," the angel joked.

Naturally, Triton then used a fin to flick some water up.

Thanatos stuck his tongue out at Triton. "Is that the best you can do?"

"I can do worse," Triton said vaguely. Leaning back to be dramatic. It didn't work as he was leaning back against the angels wing.

"Sure you can."

Triton made a noise of protest while the angel simply laughed. Triton just watched. When the angels laughter died down, Triton still watched while the angel ran a hand through his dark curls. Pushing them back from his face.

"Thank you," Triton said, surprising himself.

"For what?"

"Saving me."

Thanatos looked down, embarrassed. "It wasn't a big deal. Anyone else would have done the same."

"No they wouldn't."

"Surely at least someone would help."

"The Sea would help if they got there in time, and few of the other gods would help. Most would just look the other way."

"Where I come from they wouldn't do that," Thanatos defended. Triton wasn't surprised that he would defend his home, most had a hard time realising it if they had never been on the receiving end.

"I can't speak for them but most that I have known of turn a blind eye. Some- some jus- some-"

"You don't have to say it," Thanatos said softly.

Triton just nodded. Trying to remind himself that he was ok now. He wasn't in the trap. He wasn't in the trap. He wasn't in the trap. He wasn't in the trap.

Arms wrapped around him and Triton froze.

"What?" he squeaked.

Thanatos pulled back, "It's a hug, I've seen others do it when someone is upset. Sorry." He rubbed the back of his neck.

"Its alright, you just surprised me. That's all."

They sat in silence for a while and watched as the sea became restless. The waves angrily fought one another. The wind roared around them.

Triton felt a slight tug on his tail. He looked down and saw a seal with his tail in his mouth.

Once the seal saw that Triton was looking at him he let go of his tail. "They have noticed your absence." With that the seal turned and swam back under the sea. Most likely to wait on Triton to catch up. Seals were like that.

Triton turned to Thanatos, "I have to go."

Thanatos was staring at where the seal had popped above the surface. "I should probably go too, my wings will get wet. Will we meet again?"

Triton grinned, "I should hope so, I wouldn't want to miss the view."

Thanatos laughed at that. Triton then slipped off the rock and under the sea.
