14. Alexander
"I love you, Alexander."
She said that every night, everyday.
So why was I losing feathers? Even now, as I walked to the huge auditorium behind Alexa, white and grey feathers marked our path. Love kept feathers in plenty. When your feathers fell out, it was someone falling out of love with you.
That couldn't be Gracie. She loved me.
I snapped out of my own head as a soft hand gripped my face, turning it side to side. I stood in front of a room length mirror, bordered in show lights. The arts center costume room.
In front of me stood a girl about Alexa's height with wild brown curls of hair. Her dark brown eyes seemed black in the shadow of her eyebrows. Her lips pursed, she inspected my bruises.
"I can have this done by second period," she guessed.
Alexa huffed. "No sooner?"
"At least she's doing this for you," a deep voice warned behind me. I glanced in the mirror to see a muscular guy with black hair and green eyes sitting on the couch to my left. "So don't push it."
The girl rolled her eyes. "Don't pay Kenith mind," she said to Alexa. "He's protective."
I studied the girl's wings. Large and black, she looked like a fallen angel. Her wings only slightly surpassed Kenith's, whose were glimmering silver.
Kenith stood from the couch, coming in front of me to wrap his arms around the girl. "How could I not be? I love you, Liz."
The girl, Liz, smiled. "And I love you, dork. But you can't threaten my friends." She turned and gave him a quick kiss on the lips.
When she pulled away, I studied Kenith's face. He wore a loose smile, staring at Liz as she turned like she was his universe. She turned from the heaps of makeup on the counter to him, the same smile gleaming on her face.
Gracie never looked at me like that.
Alexa cleared her throat. "Look, lovebirds, me and pretty boy gotta go to class soon. So if you could stop swooning and get to work, it'd be greatly appreciated."
Liz laughed. "Of course." With that, she turned and set to work on cleaning my face.
