Chapter 7: Things You Need

I slowly back away from the lake, mind racing. Did he see me jump from the tree? Is he still looking at me? Why is he even in a canoe in the first place? What is he thinking? Where's a distraction when I need one?

My back is now pressed up against the tree. I crouch down and hug my knees, hoping that no one can see me. I glance around, trying to find a place where I can hide. My eyes fall on the snack shack that's about fifty feet away. Next to it is a rack of canoes, where a few seniors are hanging out. Oh well, I need to get out of sight of Morrin, not anyone else.

I stand up and glance behind my shoulder. Good, Morrin is still trying to wrestle his way out of the reeds. I take a deep breath and sprint to the snack shack. I fling open the door and, still running, face-plant into the front counter.

"Are you okay?" The guy behind the desk asks, raising an eyebrow at me as I sheepishly smile at him.

"I'm fine, I'm fine! But listen, I need to hide. Do you have a storage closest or something?" I yell, not really realizing how strange I sound.

"Uh, why do you need to hide?" The poor employee says in a monotone voice.

"I'm hiding from this person who's being really annoying and they're out to get me and I don't want to deal with them right now, can I hide here or not?"

"Uh, no." He replies, saying no like it's a question.

I glare at him for a few seconds, then briskly walk out of the building. I guess I just have to go to my dorm. That's the only place that will keep me away from Morrin.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I slam the door to my room. I know that Morrin knows why I go to this school and he knows that I didn't want him to know, but it's all too late now.

I cautiously look out my window. I can see the lake if I look through the glass at the right angle. The bulky, orange canoe sticks out in the middle of the somewhat murky lake. He's still trying to control that canoe?

My thoughts are interrupted by a knock at the door. I know by the short, rhythmic pounds on the wood that Caleb is on the other side of my room. Of course. If it's not one thing, it's another.

I stand up with a sigh and trudge to the other side of my room to open the door. We stare at each other for a few seconds, then he takes a step into my small house.

I return to my spot on the windowsill, leaving Caleb standing near the door frame. "Why are you here?" I murmur, turning away from him.

"You promised that you wouldn't jump into or out of huge trees and stuff like that anymore. Then, the next day, you did just that." Caleb explains. I can hear his small footsteps on the rug becoming louder. I know he's right behind me, but I don't care.

"Caleb, I can't stop doing what I do best. It's like telling you to--" I start.

"Never mind.If you want to keep risking your life just for fun, then go ahead. It doesn't bother me when you don't want me to try to keep you safe." Caleb tells me.

I don't reply after the door slams shut. Instead, I open the window and take a deep breath of the humid air that I normally hate. For some reason, though, it's almost soothing tonight. I guess the things you need come in strange ways.
