4. Day On the Job

I found this old Toontown Online commercial while searching for a good way to describe the black hole (teleportation) sound in Toontown. I don't know if I've ever seen this commercial, but it seems familiar, and it's hilarious! Enjoy!

I'll also be putting some extra media on my other story parts now that Wattpad allows embedded media. Yay!

~~~~~~
Toon Headquarters (commonly referred to as Toon HQ) - the place where Toons would get Toontasks (the quest system) and receive rewards for the Tasks they completed.
HQ Officers - obviously, the workers at the HQ; (in-game): the NPCs which would give Tasks to Toons.
Donald's Dock (referred as "the Docks" in this chapter) - the second main area where Toons complete Tasks; playground.
Minnie's (Melodyland) - the fifth main area in the game; playground.
Foghorn (used as alarm in this chapter) - It is the level six Gag in the Sound category. It deals up to 50 damage (55 if grown/organic) and attacks all (up to four) Cogs in one round. It has a high accuracy (the level of chance the Gag will actually be effective/work).
I reported to Toon Headquarters in Toontown Central as soon as I had received the assignment. As I walked across the playground, memories of playing in the open, grassy area came flooding back to me. It was always a bustling and bright place in the past. Festivals used to be held every few months for...something. Toonkind has always felt a need to celebrate no matter what the occasion.
It seemed those sweet memories had gone bitter. The town was now devoid of any life, except for the three of us who had been moved to this HQ. The land was darkened by the grey skies. An eerie sensation lingered in the once happy atmosphere. I suddenly realized that I hadn't been in this playground since I was in my first year of high school.
How sad.
The innermost part of the town often reserved the award for having the most traffic. There were many colorful shops that lined the well-kept streets of the Central. Shopkeepers often kept open their doors in the late hours, because there was no fear of invaders or robbers. The civilian watch police kept a keen eye out for anyone breaking curfews or suspiciously walking out and about. Although, little activity was ever reported in Toontown Central. Perhaps it was the high presence of younger toons that resulted in low crime rates and troublemakers. The other playgrounds could never match up to the Central's safe environment, despite it being the home of the government and civil officials.
In my playground, Donald's Dreamland, the civilian watch didn't seem to notice anything awry--ever. Perhaps it was the fact that night often hung over Dreamland longer than the other playgrounds, therefore making it a mundane and complicated task. To put this into perspective, we normally had no more than six hours of daylight, and even then, it was often dimmed by the clouds--not grey ones, rather, they were the normal purple-ish clouds that resided in the northern hemisphere of Toontown. We had the shortest day, as opposed to Daisy Gardens, which received many hours of daylight.
Toontown Central was very different from my homeland. The day and night cycles were pretty equal--fourteen hours of day, ten of night. It would take some adjusting for me to be able to stay in the sun longer than usual. I would have to ask to be on the night shift if possible. Also, while my hometown maintained a color scheme that blended in with its surroundings, the Central was a vibrant rainbow. The wide array of colors, which still reflected light despite the dimmed environment, made my head throb of pain as I shifted my eyesight.
The three of us made it to the door of the HQ. It was a red brick building that was topped with a tall, red hat that said "Fire Chief" in a yellow emblem lined with green. Searchlights stuck out of the sides of the roof. A tower extended from the lopsided hat, connecting loudspeakers that hung near the bottom. The exterior of the building differed greatly from the purple cylinder I had become familiar with in my playground.
One of the toons began to knock quietly on the blue double doors. It wasn't long before a bright yellow dog answered the door. "Come on in!" he said happily. "Welcome, welcome!"
The interior was the same as the one back at my hometown. The same light brown-colored wooden floors extended across the HQ. The main center was dropped down. Pipes pushed up from the middle of the room and reached out to the roof.
I walked up to the long desk that centered around the pipes. HQ Officers were running back and forth from the lab to the main desks, shouting at each other frantically. The flooring that was at the center of the room had paper covering the entirety of the boxed-in area. The entire place was, unmistakably, a mess.
However, if that wasn't enough, the situation I heard going on was even worse. Their monkey test subject (which had been transformed into some sort of gorilla monster by a machine in testing) had broken through the wall of the lab and was now outside of the playground somewhere. Now the officers had to go out and search the outskirts of Toontown, even if it was considered dangerous.
A red duck approached us as we walked towards the center of the room. "Welcome home!" he said, trying to calm the nerves of my other two partners, who were shaking in their gloves. "Let me show you to your temporary residence." The officer lead us to a small door in the floor. He unlocked it with a key he had on a lanyard and opened it to a small room filled with four bunk beds. "The three of you will be staying here for now, tomorrow we are expecting a fourth woman from the Docks. Until then, get comfy. Your shifts start in fifteen minutes." I guess there was no decision of shifts as of right now.
One at a time, we went down the metal ladder that led to a semi-refurbished basement. It reminded me of my own basement, but smaller. It was cold and dirty, but flooring had been put down. However, it was clear that the building had a sandstone foundation, because no walls had been placed. I suppose it would have taken too much space in the room. I placed my backpack on the lower bunk to the right and sat down, observing the surrounding room for a moment. A yellow bunny started opening her backpack to look for something. She had a larger chest and a stout, diamond-shaped head. She was slightly taller than an average rabbit. She wore a white shirt and a red skirt made from jean material, along with a red polka-dot bow and red high top sneakers.
Suddenly, glasses fell from above her.
"Hey!" a small, light purple cat beckoned her from the top bunk. "Can you get those furrr me?" she purred.
"Sure thing!" said the bunny, whistling through her teeth. As she stepped back and bent down to pick up the large, square spectacles, she knocked her head on the bottom of the top bed. "Ow!" she exclaimed as she rose back up, rubbing the rising, red bump on her head.
"Thanks, dear." the cat said as she took the glasses from her hands. "Are you alright?" she inquired.
"Ahh-ah! " she exclaimed as she tried to sooth the sore. "Ugh, I'm fine. Just real clumsy!" she responded with a big smile.
"Hey, I got bandages in my pack. Would you like a few?" I said, remembering I had packed some before leaving.
Their attention was suddenly placed on me. "Sure!" the bunny quickly answered. "Thanks a million!"
"No problem!" I said as I opened up the front pouch. I pulled out a small box of sticky bandages and ointment, and gave it to her.
"Oh, dear! I forgot to introduce myself! How rude of me!" she said as she rubbed the gel on her head. "I'm Lucy Hoppsworth!"
"Willow Whistletooth. Nice to meet you." I said in response.
Then the cat slid down the bunk bed ladder, reaching out for my hand. "Hi! I'm Lily Goofysnout."
"Nice to meet you." I said, giving her a quick handshake.
Lucy returned the bandages and ointment to me. "I'm so nervous about today. What if we run into a--a...Cog?" The two of them became a little jittery.
"There hasn't been a sighting for almost two weeks." I reassured them. "Besides, I doubt they'd be out in the day! They've never been found roaming when toons were present."
The both of them nodded in agreement. Then the three of us ascended to the main center of the HQ. We found two other male toons had arrived in those fifteen minutes. They were ascending from the basement across the room. One was a tiny, golden mouse who wore green clothes. The other was a large, brown dog with white clothing. Their sizes made the duo look unbalanced and goofy. The two of them stood lined up on the side of the room opposite to us.
"Attention!" The dog officer called. "I will call roll, you will respond with 'present', then you will be given your first location for your watch." he said promptly. "Goofysnout!"
"Prrresent!" Lily purred.
"You will report to Punchline." he said. "Hoppsworth!"
"Presssent!" Lucy said, whistling.
"Silly Street with an officer. Poodleton!"
"Present!" The brown dog said quickly.
"Also Punchline. Smartytoon!" Lily started to giggle when she heard the name called.
"Present." The mouse said quietly, evidently embarrassed.
"Loopy Lane. Whistletooth!"
"Present!" I said boldly.
"Also Loopy. Good. Now you are dismissed."
The five of us and an officer ventured out to the streets. Mr. Smartytoon and I walked side by side. "Hello, I'm Willow!" I said, trying to break the silence as we walked into the tunnel.
He shied away from my view.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. I just---uh..." he stammered.
I stopped him midway through the tunnel. "Hey, if you're worried about this watch--"
"No. No. That's not what it is."
"Oh?" I said inquisitively.
"I'm sorry. My name is...uhh--" He sighed before finishing his statement. "Dirtbag." he said meekly.
I didn't laugh, but instead gave a concerned look.
"Dirtbag Smartytoon." he said. "Eh. Just call me Dirt."
"Okay, Dirt." I responded, smiling.
"Sorry about the confusion. I just...don't really like my name." he said, apologizing.
"No, no. Don't worry about it. Whistletooth isn't a great name either. My teachers always thought I was gonna be a bunny.
Dirt laughed heartily as he began to move forward. We conversed until we reached the construction site of a new Toon HQ in the middle of the street, then we went our separate ways. I went off to the end of the street, where 14 Karat Goldfish was, and Dirt turned back to the beginning. We weren't expecting any activity since none had been reported recently, but we had small-sized Foghorns in case we needed to call each other, and the HQ would be able to hear us from here too.
As I reached the end of the street, I stopped for a quick drink. The sun was blinding me, so I found a shady tree to stay under. Suddenly, I saw movement from the tunnel to Melodyland. I prepared my Foghorn.
"Wait!" A voice came from the end of the street. It was the pink dog I had seen during training in Dreamland. This time she had a blue vest, a white skirt, and black tennis shoes. "Hold up! Don't call your partner!"
I stopped myself. "You scared me!" I said.
"Sorry!" she said, but it came off a little sarcastic.
"Are you patrolling in Melodyland?" I asked.
She seemed a little lost. "Huh? Oh--oh yeah! I am! Ha-ha!" she said.
"Ah, okay then." I said, trying to reassure myself that she wasn't lying. "Hey, I never caught your name."
"What?" she said with a confused look on her face.
"Back in Dreamland. When we were training. I forgot to ask your name."
The dog tightened up a bit. "Oh, uh... It's Ally." she responded.
"Willow." I said, extending my hand.
Ally hesitated before accepting my gesture. The poor girl must be awfully shy. I thought.
She quickly pulled back from the handshake. "Well, I should get back." she said.
"Alright. Have a nice day!" I said. I couldn't help but feel that she had been snooping around or looking for something, she seemed to be absentminded. She also seemed to want to avoid any conversation with me.
I watched as she disappeared back where she came from. I continued my business as usual until I heard a distinct sound echo from the stone walls of the tunnel:
Gurrgle-gurdle! Thowap! Whew!
I immediately ran to see what had created that odd noise. I ran into the tunnel, only to find no trace of any object which might have made such a sound. Confused, I recorded the noise in my book. I'd have to report it later.
Until then, it was back to roaming.
~~~~~

Guys, this story is getting serious! This is the first series I've truly stuck with. I plan on sticking through until the end!

Also I'm giving a dedication for this chapter to Nicholai-nii for encouraging me to go forth with writing this story and following it the whole way. Also, I'd like to thank any other readers, especially Spots_to_love, for being a recent reader and leaving many nice comments. I actually was pretty sure I wouldn't even get this many views on this story o'mine. Thanks for keeping up with it and going through Willow's adventure with me!

One final note, if any of my readers would like to comment any errors in the text, it'd be much appreciated. While I'm not too worried about the grammar in this work (since it is a minor fanfiction [and my first, no less!]), I would definitely love to hear about the things I messed up on so I may remember it for future works of mine!

Again, thanks for the support everyone! Have a Toontastic day!
