That's my version of Bain on the side ----------->

A huge black wolf with a silver streak down its back was standing there. It wasn’t growling but it looked very scary, especially with the fact that it wasn’t normal size. It was as tall as me and stood just thirty feet from me.

I decided to move back slowly and took my first step. It followed staring at me with glowing green eyes. I did it again but took three steps and it did also, imitating me. So I kept going back, not stopping for nothing. The wolf followed me with its eyes trained on my face. After what felt like five minutes, I turned around but looked over my shoulder. It scared the shit out of me when it caught up with me. I almost screamed and took off running. It walked beside me quietly acting like a friendly dog. I looked down and seen it was a male wolf. I hoped it didn’t think I was his girlfriend. That would be weird.

Something moved in the bushes in front of us and the wolf jetted in front of me forcing me to stop. He growled at the noise until a rat ran out scared. I couldn’t believe what just happened. The wolf was protecting me.

When he saw the rat it moved to the side to let me start walking again. I did and he stayed beside me like before. “Why are you protecting me?” I asked in a whisper not expecting him to really talk.

The wolf cocked his head listening to me. “I should be your supper,” I said jokingly with a soft voice. I was scared I would startle him into wanting to attack me.

He growled softly at that and looked away. We made it to the end where my house was across the street. I kept walking and saw he stayed behind. I stopped and smiled at the big beast. It almost made me cry that I had to leave him. I wanted to keep him like a little girl wants her first puppy.

I walked back to him and slowly outstretched my arm. He cocked his head to the side and let me touch his fur. It wasn’t as soft as a bunny but he sure wasn’t a rabbit. I petted his head and said good bye. I walked away and went to the house. When I got there, I looked back once more and he was gone. I hoped I would see him again soon. The wolf already owned a piece of my heart. I couldn’t wait to tell Addie.

The next morning I got ready and heard a horn blow outside. I sighed knowing it was Bain. To be honest with myself, I wanted to see him. I would never admit that out loud though. He made me curious and he was new. He has forced himself in my life whether I like it or not. Anyone else would have got their feelings hurt. His was made of stone, I guess.

I walked out locking my door. He was standing at the passenger door waiting on me. “I can get in myself,” I said with attitude.

He picked me up anyways and put me in closing the door. He got in and took off not saying anything. I hated it being this quiet. It felt too awkward. “So, you’re Bain?” I asked looking at him. He was wearing dark worn jeans that fit him perfectly, a black shirt that showed off his muscular physique and black boots. His hair was messy but it looked good on him. I could look at him all day long and never get tired doing it.

“So, you’re Kitten?” Bain said copying me.

“Don’t call me that! My name is Kaitlin! K-A-I-T-L-I-N.”

Bain looked at me like I better shut up so I did. When we arrived, I waited for him to open my door. He put his warm hands around my waist and picked me up. The truck had a step ladder but he must have thought I couldn’t use it. He put me down gently and slowly slid his hands free. The move caused chills to run up my spine. Neither one of us moved for a few seconds. I just stared at my feet feeling embarrassed but turned on. My cheeks were flushed at the moment and I didn’t want him to see so I ran in the diner like a chicken instead of confronting it head on.

I clocked in and put my apron on finally looking out the window. He was gone and I sighed out loud. Heather had a look of shock on her pretty face. “Bain Winters brought you to work?” she asked excitedly.

I nodded. “Is that supposed to be life altering?” I asked sarcastically.

“Hell yeah! What’s wrong with you? Every female for 50 miles will want to claw your eye balls out, including me!” she said.

I laughed. “It’s not like he’s interested in me, Heather. He just saw me walking and decided to help me out. He would’ve done it for you too if he saw you walking.” I said reassuring her.

“Who are we talking about here? Bain is not nice like you think he is. He won’t talk to most women. Only when he wants some and they have been in love ever since.” Heather said.

For some reason my heart hurt when she talked about him and other girls. It made me insanely jealous and I knew I had problems. I needed to get away from him before I get more attached. I nodded to Heather to let her know I got her message loud and clear. I worked my tail off the rest of the day until an hour before time to go. I wanted to leave before Bain came to pick me up. I asked Troy if I could get off early and he agreed without complaint.

Ever since yesterday, Troy has been acting weird. He even helped me clean a few of my tables when I got too busy with other customers. Heather seems to think he has fallen in love with me. I knew better.

I clocked out and left walking. My feet weren’t as sore as yesterday but they were starting to hurt. I was used to it though. My walk was fine and I was two miles away from home when Bain come screeching to a halt in the road. I watched him get out angry and stalk toward me. My heart picked up and I thought about running. It was too late though. He took my arm and led me quickly to his truck. “I told you I would pick you up for now on! What were you thinking leaving an hour early and not waiting on me?” he demanded before helping me in.

I was pissed now. “I don’t have to listen to you, Bain!” I yelled in his face. He was standing so close and looking down at me. Not to mention, he still hasn’t let go of my arm. It was very intimidating but I stood my ground.

Bain’s hand tightened and his eyes began to glow. “Yes you do!” he yelled and jerked the door opened. He put me in and slammed the door. He walked around the truck mad as hell for reasons I knew nothing about. I guess he didn’t like being stood up.

He got in and took off spinning tires. “You have problems! You’re acting like I belong to you,” I said more calmly than yelling. He looked at me and smirked evilly. My heart flipped upside down when I remembered what Heather said.

“Are you trying to sleep with me?” I asked suspiciously.

Bain smirked. “Kitten, if I was trying, you’d know it.”

“Then why do you care whether I walk or not? You know what, don’t answer that! I don’t want you in my life. Just leave me alone!” I said ready to cry.

Bain pulled into my driveway and cut off the truck. “Come here,” he said.

I shook my head with my arms crossed. I just wanted out of the truck. It felt too claustrophobic with him. Bain reached out and slid me across the seat and into his lap. My face heated and I tried to get off but his arm held me still. “Stop Bain,” I whispered.

His hand slowly slid up my back making me shiver. He fisted it in my hair and pulled my head back. I was too stunned to do anything. I looked into his beautiful eyes and got caught. His lips met mine and I was a goner. He had me and there was nothing I could do to stop it. I didn’t want to stop it.

One hand gripped the steering wheel and the other his arm. I opened for him and he took. A small moan escaped me and he kissed harder. I wanted him to touch me everywhere. I have never acted like this before but I didn’t care right now.

His lips stopped kissing mine and he turned my face toward his. “Look at me!” he demanded. I opened my eyes not realizing I had closed them. “Don’t leave home or work without me picking you up, Kitten.” He said sternly. “Do you understand?”

“Yesss!” I hissed.

Bain let go of me and let me return to my seat. I tried to open the door and was surprised when it did. I shot out almost tripping on his step. I slammed his door as hard as I could and ran inside. I heard him leave and a big weight lifted from my shoulders.

Everything about him was intimidating, overbearing, controlled, and dominate. I needed advice from someone who knows him well instead of just rumors. Then a thought popped in my head. If I could find another ride or even buy a cheap car, he would go away. I couldn’t handle being touched by him. My own body betrays me. He even had my mind captured until he stopped touching me.

Now I was left with the question of what does he want from me? I have nothing I can call my own but muffin. If he wants to sleep with me, then he needs to get it over with. I don’t like being attached to people. I’d rather be alone then lose someone else that I love dearly.

The next day Bain picked me up and dropped me off. Not before he warned me about leaving early. He also gave me his cell number to call in case I needed to go before he arrived. I took it without argument even though I wasn’t going to use it. It was an intense ride after he kissed me yesterday. He acted as if it didn’t bother him but I was too nervous. I ended up holding onto the door like it was my life line.

Heather was staring like yesterday morning when I came in. She almost broke her neck trying to get to me. “Again? He brought you to work again?” she asked stunned.

I wiped the counter down just to look busy. “Yeah, but not for long,” I said trying to end the conversation.

“Well, a little heads up, Connor said he has been acting like a lion trapped in a cage for the past few days. Something is going on for him to take interest in you.”

My gaze turned to hers and I saw her looking at me suspicious. I rolled my eyes at her and threw the cloth in the bin. “Who’s Connor?”

“Connor Winters is Bain’s little brother. He’s nineteen and very much single,” she said raising her eyebrows.

I laughed at her and got to work. My day was going good until a very rude guy was giving me trouble. Every time he asked for something, I went and got it. He made me do ten trips over the stupidest stuff. The last time he asked for something, he laughed with his buddy as I went to get it. I returned and slammed it down in front of him. “The next thing you ask me to get will be shoved down your throat,” I growled.

The guys smile evaporated quickly. “I need to talk with your manager,” he said.

I nodded and called Troy over. Troy listened to the guy lie about asking me for one thing and I threatened him. He even listened to the friend tell his side.

“I’m sorry about that. Your meal will be taken out of Kaitlin’s salary.” Troy told them.

“What?” I yelled. The guy snickered and I went for him. Troy grabbed my wrist pulling me away from them. He held it so tight it hurt.

“You’re hurting me Troy,” I said pulling away. Troy pulled back like I burnt him. He pushed his hands in his pockets looking scared. Something was up with Troy and it happened the same day he got his black eye and split lip.

“One more complaint from someone, I will have to fire you,” he said looking anywhere but me. He walked away and had the two guys leave before I finished my shift.

When I clocked out, Bain was waiting for me outside. Heather’s face was glued to the window as she saw him help me in the truck. She shook her head and dialed someone on her cell phone. I just knew the brat was telling everyone she knew about it.

We took off and Bain looked over. “Do you work tomorrow?”

“No, I’m off Saturday through Monday.” I said.

“Good. Be ready at five tomorrow and no disagreeing,” Bain said challenging me.

“Why?”

“I’m taking you out, Kitten,” came his simple response.

My heart did a backwards flip and then a cart wheel. He wanted to take me out? It felt good for a few seconds until I remembered what Heather said.

She was right. I wasn’t pretty enough or even smart enough for him to take interest in me. Something was up. Maybe it had to do with his evening job. He was always wearing his black clothes and gear picking me up. Or maybe he wants a piece of the new girl. It could be any reason.

I remained silent until he pulled up at my house. “Thanks for the ride.” I said getting out.

“Kitten?” he called before I closed the door. “Tomorrow at five. Be here and don’t make me hunt you down,” he warned.

I nodded and shut his door. He left as soon as I made it inside. What have I got myself into? If only my mother was here to give me advice on what to wear or say. I’ve never been on a real date before. Mason thought hanging out at his house with his buddies around was the perfect date. Don’t get me wrong, I had fun back then but that was all it was. He never had my heart or my virginity.

Muffin rubbed her body on my ankles trying to get my attention. I picked her up and checked her food bowl. It still had food in it. “Why didn’t you finish your food, chick?” I asked giving her a kiss. Muffin meowed at me loudly. She was trying to talk back. I thought that was amazing when I first got her. If I asked her something, she always answered with a meow.

I fixed spaghetti for dinner and sat down at my small dining table to eat. I placed Muffin’s bowl on the other side of the table and she joined me in eating. Sometimes I think she waits to eat just so she can eat with me.

When we finished I thought about going to see Addie but decided to go in the morning. KC the keeper, loved to talk with me and I haven’t seen him in over a week. I had a few questions I wanted to ask anyway. I wondered if he has ever seen the wolf in the woods or at the cemetery. Are there others? And I wanted to get his opinion on bad boy resident Bain Winters.

KC once told me he knew everyone in this town. He is pretty old. When I first met him, he tried to run me off thinking I was there to vandalize the stones. That was until he realized he had never seen me before. Now, he encourages me to come every day.

Muffin and I went to bed fairly early with our stomachs full. I was almost asleep when the brat took over my pillow. I slid over to the other side of the bed and let her have it. “There, you satisfied!” Muffin lifted her head and meowed. I knew she just told me, “Yeah.” I rolled my eyes and fell to sleep quickly.

The next morning I took my shower and ate breakfast with Muffin. I headed out to go see KC and Addie. When I got there, KC was pulling old weeds out from around a grave stone. His weathered face was concentrating on making the area look good. When he heard me approaching, he looked up and gave me a toothless smile.

“Kaitlin! I’ve been worried you got tired of visiting me. How have you been young lady?”

KC stood up and wiped his dirty hands on his overalls. “I would never stop visiting you or Addie. And I’ve been good. How have you been?” I asked getting on my knees and helping him pull up the weeds.

KC joined me and we passed small talk between each other while we worked. I figured I would go ahead and ask him about the wolf. If he hadn’t seen it, he might think I’m crazy and never talk to me again.

“Um KC, have you seen a wolf walking around in this area?” I asked.

KC’s body went rigid as he slowly stood up. I followed suit and watched his reaction. He stared down at nothing in particular before turning his gaze to mine. “I’m not going to beat around the bush with you because you’re smarter than that so, yes I have. He is very friendly and would protect you with his life. If you’ve seen him then it means he wanted you to and that makes you very special to him.”

As he spoke I knew he was telling the truth. KC was the type of man that would never bull shit you. You could take his word at face value. “He walked me home two nights ago. I think he wanted to protect me,” I said with a slight smile. “Why would I be special? Hasn’t others seen him?”

“Only time will tell why you’re special to him, and others have seen him. Most of the town hasn’t but know he exists and he’s not the only one. There are others too. What did he look like?”

“He was a beautiful black wolf with a silver streak down his back. And he was as tall as me,” I said raising my hand to the level of hid height.

KC nodded. “That’s what I thought.”

“I also have another question to ask. You said you knew everyone in this town and I was wondering if you could tell me about Bain Winters.”

KC smiled brightly. “What about him?”

“Well, he has been taking me back and forth to work and even asked me out on a date tonight. He acts as if I should do everything he asks by agreeing to what he says. Its infuriating.” I said rolling my eyes.

KC shook his head still smiling. “You are more special than I thought. The only thing I can tell you Kaitlin is give it a chance. Bain is a man that goes after what he wants and he doesn’t take no for an answer. And don’t listen to what others tell you about him. He’s an honest man and would do anything for you,” he said with feeling.

“It seems you know him very well?”

KC knelt back down to continue his pulling of weeds. “Yeah, I do. He’s my grandson.”
