Chapter 16: Pink cross

Kaitlin

What was wrong with me?

I was sitting on the side of the garden tub crying with a towel held to my eyes. I knew Bain wouldn’t be far behind, so I locked the door.

I didn’t want him seeing me like this even though I already cried in front of him. He would think he did it but in reality, it was all me.

“Kitten!” Bain said loudly at the door. “What’s wrong? Did I hurt you?” he asked gently. I heard the door knob rattle as soon as he asked.

“No, Bain! I’ve done told you, you didn’t hurt me. I’m fine,” I responded back. I know Bain won’t leave. It’s not in his nature to just walk away. I was wasting my breath.

“Open the door, baby. Don’t make me break it down,” he warned.

I sighed and threw the towel down. “If you break it down, we won’t have a door anymore.” As soon as I got that out, Bain busted through, hitting it with his shoulder. It cracked the frame but the door was still intact.

I jumped up and pulled my shirt together. He saw my reaction and a flash of hurt filled his face. “I’m so sorry, Kitten.” He pulled me into his arms and held me there.

“Don’t be. You’ve done nothing wrong.  I cried because I never thought I would find love like this. Most of the time, it’s only written in books, not reality. You have given me something that every girl dreams about but doesn’t get to live it. I’m crying because I’m happy with my life and sad that my parents don’t get to see this,” I said holding him tighter.

Bain said nothing as he lifted me up and took me back to bed. He laid down with me draped over his chest. With Bain quiet, I could still have my thoughts and him at the same time. It was perfect. He always knew what I needed.

We were woken by Kade knocking on the door. I could vaguely remember a cell phone going off just minutes earlier.

Bain helped me get dressed before going to the door. He jerked it opened and barked “Yeah?”

“Sorry to bother you but you’ve got to hear this,” Kade said waving him on. I was immediately curious since he didn’t explain what this is. So I ran out of the room, following them. Bain looked at me over his shoulder about to tell me to go back to the room.

“I don’t think so, General Winters,” I smarted.

He smirked before turning his head. I was surprised and was ready to hug him. He has been so protective lately, if I moved an inch, he was suddenly there to make sure I was okay. I blamed Dennis for this.

Kade led us downstairs where Connor and Laven held an exhausted Jenna. Her once perfect hair was in tangles and she wore a long black shirt that went past her knees. Her eyes were swollen from crying a lot and faint black steaks stained her face. Believe it or not, she looked like a normal girl now. Younger even.

Bain immediately stiffened from her presence. “You brought her back in my house!?” he growled at all of them.

I could tell Bain blamed her for my kidnapping and getting hurt. And it was her fault for letting Dennis free but she was a woman. From my experience since I met Bain, women will do anything or say anything to get what they want but they shouldn’t be treated badly. Just stay away from them.

“Tell him everything, Jenna, and don’t leave nothing out,” Kade said.

She cleared her throat and raised her eyes to Bain. “Dennis found me a week before you caught him. He paid me money to tell him everything about all of you and your home. I did without hesitation because I was still angry at Kade,” she said cutting her eyes to him. “He also told me he would give me twice as much if I helped him. He said in case he got caught, he wanted me to bail him out. At first, I thought he was going about this the wrong way and asked why didn’t he just go ahead and take her. He said he wanted her to fall in love with him like his mother fell in love with his father. Whatever that meant. So, I agreed to it all and when he didn’t meet me again, I knew you had him.”

“Where did he tell you he was going?” Bain asked with his arms crossed.

“To Garrett Reeves. He’s planning on getting as many Alphas as he can together to come and kill you for taking his mate. He should be in Delute right now or in a neighboring county.”

Bain cursed loudly. “We need to get to him before he comes here. I’ve done sent all the wolves back home when he took Kitten.” He turned to Kade and started ordering. “Do something with her and I want everyone in my office in the next ten minutes!”

Bain took my arm while I was still standing there a little shocked and scared. He pulled me upstairs and was about to take me to the room.

“If you so much as try to drop me off, I will kick you in the balls for a whole week! I’m a part of this too Bain!” I growled.

Bain stopped in the doorway with me still in his grasp. “Don’t make empty threats….”

Before he could say anything else further, I kneed him, making him drop instantly.

“Ahhh, dammit, Kitten,” he yelled holding himself.

Connor just so happened to be passing by to go to Bain’s office and snickered under his breath. I felt bad as soon as I did it knowing I should have never used abuse to get my point across. But Bain would have never listened to me otherwise. He would have growled at me for yelling and fighting with him and still left me in the room.

Hell, he might just leave me anyway.

Bain slowly rose up trying to breath normally again. He locked eyes with me and took hold of my jaw. “That was very bad, Kitten,” he said evenly. “So, this is what I’ll have to look forward to the rest of the week?”

I nodded not sure where he was going with this. He wasn’t yelling or growling so I was confused.

“Then I guess I’ll have to take you with me,” he lowered his head and met my lips with his. The kiss was soft and gentle and it was nothing like what he would do when he was mad. He was throwing me for a loop.

When he pulled back, I saw the fire enter his eyes. There was the Bain I knew! “You know I will get you for that, right?” He threatened.

I nodded again because there was no sense in denying it. I was in trouble soon. Hell, I’ve been in trouble since he’s met me.

Bain smirked and took me to the office with him. Connor was sitting on the couch and looked up with a smirk of his own. “Soooo….how’s it hanging?” he joked.

Bain grabbed his crotch and joked back. “To the left right now since the little vixen kneed them.”

I slapped Bain’s arm playfully and shook my head. It was rare to see Bain smile or even joke. It looked good on him. I would love to see him relaxed and comfortable too. Once Dennis was out of our hair, that’s what I was going to demand from him. I might even try to talk him into taking us on a vacation. He needed one terribly.

“Well at least there was no major damage. I would like to get a niece or nephew out of him before long,” Connor said looking at me.

My eyes widened when he said that. I haven’t thought about having kids since I was very young. But the reality of it hit me full force. Bain and I haven’t used protection not once since we’ve been intimate. I cut my eyes to his to see if he was having the same reaction. He wasn’t. He was firing up his computer and didn’t even look my way.

Connor caught my reaction and was about to say something when he decided against it. then Laven and Kade came in getting his attention away from me. I think Connor knew what I was thinking. He just didn’t know we haven’t used protection.

Bain got to the point as soon as everyone took a seat. “We leave for Delute tonight. I want him dead before the next morning. Once we get him in our sights, you wait for me to give the go ahead. We obviously won’t be in our territory so I’ve got to contact Jace. I don’t want a war with him so no one is to take down his brother.”

“What if he tries to kill us?” Connor asks.

“I’ll have to get Jace to distract him somehow. But as far as I know about him, Garrett’s not a murderer. He’s crooked and very sly but not a killer.”

“What about me?” I ask confused. Bain has not allowed me to leave because he’s too protective. If they were all leaving, who was watching me?

Bain sighed heavily before answering. “You’ll be with me. I don’t trust anyone enough to leave you here, Kitten.”

That worried me. I could tell he hated the idea but it was the only way.

Bain took out his cell and dialed a number. Everyone remained quiet as he spoke with Jace Reeves. He told him everything that has gone on. After a five minute conversation, he hung up and nodded.

“He’s on board and will keep Garrett busy. The problem we might have is, he can’t tell any of his guys we’re coming. One of them could tell Garrett and he will alert Dennis. So, we need to be as silent as possible. Do you understand?” he said narrowing his eyes at Connor.

All three was looking at Connor with suspicion. “Hey, I’m not that bad!” he defended throwing his hands up.

Kade snorted.

“I’m lost. What am I missing?” I asked them.

Bain stared at Connor as he answered me. “When he goes on missions, he likes to blow things up. That’s why I hardly send him out anymore.”

“And that’s not fair!” he pointed at Bain. “I’ve always got the job done. Even quicker than any of you,” Connor said a little pissed.

“Kade, while Connor pouts, can you get all the weapons ready?” Bain asked irritated.

Connor just sat there with his hands locked together behind his head. I could tell he was getting real pissed at Bain. His jaw was clamped tight and his nostrils were flaring. Obviously, this was a touchy subject to him. And if Connor was right, then Bain should give him better jobs to do.

“Laven, I need you to make sure we have plenty of gas in the vehicles. We will be taking our own in case something happens.”

Laven jumped right up like he was ready to get the hell out of there. He left quickly and Kade stood up next. He tried lingering more because he could tell Connor was about to go off. Someone had to be the referee.

“What kind of chore do you have for me, Bain? Wash your laundry and fix your dinner?” he spat.

“Connor?” Kade warned.

Bain just stood there staring at him. Bain didn’t look as mad as Connor but that didn’t mean nothing. Both of them were waiting on the other to jump. So, I stepped in.

“Connor, can you help me with something?” I asked quickly walking toward the door.

Both of them looked to me in surprise, even Kade. I don’t know what was so surprising about it but I didn’t let it affect me.

Connor jumped up from his semi-relaxed posture and turned his back on Bain, walking out. Still, Bain remained in the same spot and never took his eyes off of Connor until he left out of the room. It made me angry with him for not trying to fix the problem with his brother. When his gaze met mine, he looked pissed at me for interfering. So, I walked out without saying anything to him.

I don’t know what really happened in the office but I never realized there was animosity between Bain and Connor.

Connor was leaning against the railing on the stairs as I met up with him. “What you need, Kit?”

I had to think quickly because I had no idea. I just pulled him out because I didn’t want to see them fight. “I want you to teach me some self-defense before I go.”

He smirked and nodded. “Come on,” he said waving me down the stairs. I followed and was relieved he seemed okay. But, I was betting Bain wasn’t.

Connor took me down to the basement and into the gym they had set up. He walked over to a mat and waited as I looked around at the equipment. I made a mental note to come down here and workout.

I stood across from him kind of nervous now that we were actually about to do this. Connor was as big and tall as Bain was. “Do you know how to block a direct hit?” he asked.

I shook my head. Connor got into position with his left front forward and his right foot back. I’m left handed so I did the opposite.

“No. I need you to try to hit me so you can see how to block,” he smiled.

Swallowing, I approached him and froze. I had no idea how he wanted me to do this. I can hit but it’s different when you’re not angry at someone.

“What’s wrong Kit, scared?” he taunted catching on.

I narrowed my eyes and put one hand on my hip. “That’s not going to work.”

“We came down here to teach you a few defense moves. If you want to learn, then grow some balls and fucking hit me,” he said waving his hand to come on.

I did. I threw a punch straight at his face but somehow I ended up with him behind me and my arm pulled tight behind my back. It was a quick move that needed to be done a lot of times before I get the hang of it.

Connor and I practiced a few times and then he ruined it by asking a question. “Why were you scared earlier about having me a niece or nephew?”

I stopped and looked at him for a minute. I didn’t know how to answer it. Was I supposed to just tell him about mine and Bain’s sex life?

“I’m too young,” I blurted.

Connor smiled and shook his head. “I’m guessing Bain hasn’t discussed with you how potent a Lycan can be. Even with birth control, a lycan can beat those odds by eighty percent.”

My jaw dropped and I had to sit down. So it wouldn’t even matter if I was on birth control? I started panicking and counted the days of my last period. A tear burst free when I realized I was supposed to start a week ago. The time that I was with Dennis. That means, if I was pregnant, it happened before he even took me.

Connor looked worried and sat down beside me. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you, Kit. What’s wrong?”

“I was supposed to start a week ago,” I whispered, staring into space.

Connor jumped up and yelled, pumping his fist in the air. “Woo hoo!”

I gave him a mean look and he laughed.

“ah, come on…… you know you’re happy too?” he teased.

If Bain found out that I might be pregnant, I would be locked into the room until he knew otherwise. There was no way I was going to tell him. I just needed to get Connor on board with me.

“You can’t tell him.”

Connor stopped grinning and gave me a scornful look. I could see he wasn’t going to listen. Connor loved me like a sister. He was just as bad as Bain was.

“Yes, I can. But, you can tell him for me. Preferably before we leave tonight.”

“Please Connor!” I pleaded getting up. “At least let me find out if it’s true or not first. I can’t put that kind of worry on him right now.”

Connor thought about it and nodded. “Fine, but you’ll find out now. I’m going to pick you a test up and you’re going to take it. Always remember, I love you too and I will never put your life in danger. If you don’t tell him before we leave tonight, I will.”

He walked out without letting me answer. I stood there in the middle of the mat scared. I have never missed a period before. Heck, I just started two years ago. The bad thing was; I always kept up with it until now. There was too much things going on that made me forget to keep count.

A small part of me was excited about having Bain’s baby but another part of me was terrified. I can’t put myself in harm’s way if I’m really pregnant. My baby is worth being holed up in house for nine months. But I’m scared if Dennis tries to do something stupid again, my baby could get hurt. Connor was right, I needed to tell Bain as soon as possible.

I left the gym after standing in there for a while to go find Bain. Connor was coming in the door as soon as I made it to the stairs. He looked around to make sure the coast was clear and handed me a box. I didn’t stick around to thank him or anything. My nerves was jumping too bad to think.

I took off to the bathroom near the kitchen and locked the door. Tearing into the box, I read the instructions and got ready. I did what it told me to do and put the cap back on it. I had to wait three minutes to get the results.

I chewed my lip for a minute and bounced my legs nervously. This was going to kill me. I hated waiting on news like this. Why can’t everything be instant?

Sighing, I approached the sink where I laid it down and looked at the small window. There was a huge pink plus sign staring back at me. I yanked the box up and read the directions again. Sure enough, it said it was positive. If it was negative, it would be minus.

I threw the box and stick in the trash and slung the door opened. Connor was there waiting on me at the stairs. “Well?” he asked with a smile.

“I can’t tell you yet. Bain has to be the first to know.”

Connor narrowed his eyes and knew the answer. He nodded and I left him standing there as I climbed the longest stairs in my life.

What if Bain hated it? What if he decided he didn’t want me anymore? I would have to raise the child all alone.

I took the long walk down the hall and entered the office. Bain was sitting at his desk and Kade was leaning over him looking at the computer screen. They both looked up but continued what they were doing after they realized who walked in.

I know he doesn’t know what secret I’m holding but it hurt for him to shun me right now. I guess he was still mad at me for interfering between him and Connor.

“Bain?” I asked in a tiny voice.

He ignored me for a minute as he said something to Kade. Kade left and he finally looked at me. I burst into tears from feeling not wanted. Bain was in front of me in lightning speed. He pulled me to his chest and wrapped his arms around me.

“Who’s ass am I kicking, baby?” he growled.
