Chapter 1

Shelby Keenan quietly resides in the passenger seat on the dark blue Subaru. She is dressed in a long- sleeved dark gray tee shirt with a red flannel shirt over it, a pair of jeans and a pair of sneakers. Her blonde hair rests over her right shoulder. She keeps her gaze out of the window. Exactly three and a half weeks earlier, she lived a normal predictable teenage life. Now she finds herself being a product of divorce and living with only her mother. The typical fall forest scenery changes to the main street of a small town called Willow Creek.

"I know your mad at me Shelby. But I tried everything I could to get your dad to understand...frankly I was over living in a one-sided marriage" Her mom explains, slowing her car to a stop in front of a crosswalk.

"I'm not. I understand why you needed to be done". Shelby pauses. "Besides, if I'm mad. My anger isn't with you".

"That makes me feel a bit better. Less guilty for uprooting your entire life". Her mom turns the steering wheel and directs the car onto another paved road.

"I can make a new life and friends...whatever else". Shelby adjusts the way she is sitting in the seat. "I'm a simple creature. You know that".

"I'm thankful for having such an understanding daughter. Especially right at this moment" Her mom replies.

Then the car stops again. In front of them, there happens to be an old and small family run inn. A two-story faded white house with a large porch on the front. Her mom unbuckles her seat belt.

"Welcome to our new home," Her mom announces, pushing open the door.

After a couple of minutes of staring at the house and attempting to take in the new surroundings, Shelby exits the Subaru. She pushes the door closed. Then she adjusts the bag strap of her navy shoulder bag. As both of the newcomers stand there, a dark red haired women named Lillian comes walking over from the porch. Lillan greets them both and inquiries about how their trip to Willow Creek was.

"It was a fine trip. Thank you. This is my daughter Shelby" Mrs. Keenan informs. "You are Lillian, right? We conversed on the phone about us staying here and myself working here".

"Of course. Of course. Yes, I remember. You two are welcome to stay. I already prepared a room for you and your beautiful daughter here" Lillian explains. "I'll take you there now, if you want to get settled".

"Sure. That'd be great" Mrs. Keenan replies.

Lillan begins to lead them across the wet grassy yard. She walks up a couple of steps and heads toward the front door. As Shelby and her mom make their ways on the porch, the door appears to be held by a young attractive brunette boy.

"This is my son Micheal. You'll see him around the place. He stays here from time to time with my husband Fred and I" Lillian half introduces. "Micheal, this is Mrs. Keenan and her daughter Shelby. They'll be living with us. Treat with Shelby with upmost respect".

"I will grammy" Micheal promises, while she passes through the doorway.

Shelby follows her mom in and thanks Micheal for holding the door.

"Who was at the door, honey?". A gray haired lady named Lena curiously watches from the couch. She wears a red handknit sweater, an orange crocheted scarf, a pair of jeans and a pair of slippers. A black walker resides beside the end of the couch.

"Some new Willow creeks visitors mom" Lillian informs, loudly.

"Oh, really. Yes. Well, that's nice" Lena replies. "Hello girls".

"Hello," Mrs. Keenan greets.

"These are the girls I told you about" Lillan informs her mom, while walking over to her.

"You told me. Now when did you tell me that?" Lena half asks, slightly confused.

"A couple days ago," Lillan answers, standing beside the end of the couch.

"When?" Lena asks.

"A couple days ago" Lillan repeats.

"Oh, yes. Yes. I'm sure you told me. Now, girls. Do you have somewhere to stay? You know, Lilly sweetie. They should stay here". Lena smiles. "Would you like that girls? I'm sure you two are good company".

Lillan shakes her head and cracks a smile. "Would you two like to stay here?".

"Sure. That'd be nice" Mrs. Keenan answers.

"Why don't I show two around? Before settling into your room" Lillian half asks.

The trio of three begins to head toward a nearby hallway.

"Lilly, make sure to give them a good room honey" Lena orders, politely.

"I know mom". Lillian rounds the corner. "The kitchen area is right down here,".

After their tour, Shelby decides to stay in her room. A while later, Shelby returns to the kitchen. Micheal appears to be sitting at one of the many tables in the dining room. She walks in the kitchen, over to the microwave area. She places a mug of hot water in the microwave and sets the timer. She looks over to Micheal. He resides at a table with a sketchbook in front of him.

"You like to draw," Shelby comments.

"Uh. Yeah. Still learning though,...I want to be a professional artist". Micheal continues the drawing with a gray colored pencil. "What about you?".

"What about me?". Shelby leans against the counter.

"What do you like to do for hobbies? What do you want to do in life?" Micheal inquires.

Shelby shrugs. "I like to write. I could possibly have the skill to become a professional. I don't know". Shelby looks down to the laminate light gray tilted floor.

"Why'd you come to Willow Creek?" Micheal asks.

"Change of scenery, I guess" Shelby answers, before the microwave dings. "You?".

"Born and raised here. If you ever want to know where the best hangouts around town are, I'll show you" Micheal explains.

"Well. Sounds like a good way to spend my first weekend in Willow Creek". Shelby collects her mug from the microwave and presses the door closed.

"Yeah, want to spend the day in town tomorrow? We can go whenever you want. Though I'll warn you that it's a small town. So the tour won't be that exciting and possibly not that long" Micheal expresses.

Shelby laughs. "Yeah, I'm good with a simple atmosphere". Shelby places an old grey tea bag in the mug.

"Cool. Just let me know when you want to head down to town. In the mornings, if I'm not inside here, I'm usually on the porch" Micheal replies.

"Okay. I'll come find you. When I'm ready" Shelby promises. "Goodnight Micheal".

"Goodnight Shelby" Micheal replies as she leaves the room.
