Red lips and expensive champagne

I knocked on the door of the apartment, my spare hand loosely grasping the strap of my bag as I waited for a response. As if on cue, the door opened to reveal my best friend and crush, Will, smiling at me.

"You alright, lass?" he asked, making me smile as he leant down and kissed my head as I walked in.

"Aye. What about you?" I returned.

"I'm not too bad. But, I have a favour to ask yis." He admitted. I looked at hm with furrowed eyebrows as we both sat down on the sofa, Will's hand moving to hold my thigh. Not that I minded.

"Go on." I nodded. He gulped and looked at me.

"The Youtube Awards Gala is coming up, and I want you to go with is." He nodded. I looked at him.

"Like a date?" I asked accusingly.

"Na, I mean, aye, I mean...fucks sake, it's whatever you want it to be." He sighed. I returned it and bit my lip as I looked at him. I had had a crush on Will for a number of years now, not helped by the fact that we had grown up together in Newcastle and then had both moved down to London. When he had admitted a year ago that he felt the same, I thought that my world would be complete. And yet, something didn't feel right. Neither of us could put our finger on exactly what the problem was, but something was missing. Making both of us question if we should act on our feelings towards one another, despite both of us knowing that the other liked us back. It was a fucked up situation. And so, since that moment a year ago, we had agreed to remain best friends and see how that went, but it was obvious that both of us were getting increasingly desperate for more. Will had just been the first one to act on it.

"Will, I don't know, mate. What if someone asks about us?" I sighed and shook my head.

"Then we tell them. To be honest with ya, pet, I don't know why we aren't together yet." He scoffed quietly as he looked at me.

"You know why, Will. We both felt that absence of something that we need." I replied. He sighed and nodded.

"Aye, I know." He mumbled before looking at me.

"It doesn't have to be a date. It's whatever you want it to be. If you want us to go as more than friends, we can. If you want us to just go as friends, we can do that too. It's your choice, pet." He reassured. I sighed and bit my lip as I looked at him, the hopeful look in his beautiful eyes swaying me.

"Fine. We'll go as friends, but we'll see where the night takes us." I admitted. Will's eyes widened slightly.

"Are you saying that it could turn into an actual date, like?" he smiled slightly.

"Maybe, I don't know, Will. Let's just see what happens, yeah?" I asked.

"Aye, lass, I'll take that." He smiled, making me return it as I leant in and hugged him.

Will and I walked into the gala room in which the awards gala was being held, my hand around his arm as we walked in. My eyes widened slightly as I looked at the black ties and beautiful dresses that occupied the room. Despite Will telling me that it was a relatively chilled night (for a gala, anyway), I had made him wear his tux, and I had opted for a black floor-length dress, paired with curled hair and red lips. I was glad that I had done, now.

"Will, this place is beautiful." I scoffed, looking up at the massive chandeliers that lit up the hall.

"Aye, I know. This YouTube lot don't spare any expenses, like." He teased, making me smirk and shake my head as Will's arm wrapped around my waist and he led me to the bar. I smiled at the bartender as we were passed two glasses full of champagne.

"Free champagne? The surprises keep coming." I chuckled as I took a sip.

"Ooh, it's expensive champagne too." I scoffed.

"You can tell that you're Northern, lass, you're too far easily pleased to be from here." He teased. I rolled my eyes playfully before downing the rest of the drink and taking Will's hand in mine.

"What ya doing?" he scoffed.

"I want to dance." I stated. Will rolled his eyes playfully and nodded before quickly downing his drink and putting it back on the bar so that he could be pulled away by me. I smiled and bit my lip, making him return the look as I pulled him into the centre of the dance-floor as a slow song started to play. Will looked at me, his gaze full of love and adoration for me as he curled his arms around my waist in order to pull me into him, my arms hooking over his shoulders in response. He closed his eyes and gently pressed our foreheads together, making me smile and relax into his arms. After all, his arms were my home. He swayed us to the music, my body and mind too engrossed in the moment to take any notice of the couples around us that were also dancing. To me, it was just the two of us in that entire room, and that was just the way that I wanted it. I opened my eyes again and smiled as Will was already staring at me contently, making a small smile dance on his lips too. Though mine dipped as his eyes flicked to my lips, making me gulp. I had a feeling that we were about to become more than friends. And if I was completely honest, I didn't know how I felt about that. Will started to slowly but surely lean down, my head automatically craning up to lessen the space between us. Will gave me one last small smile before closing the gap and gently pressing our lips together. I returned it, holding his face as his hands on my waist brought me further into his body. He deepened the kiss, gently sliding his tongue into my mouth as we continued to make out on the dance-floor. But something still felt wrong. I broke the kiss and looked down.

"Y/N, what's wrong, lass?" Will mumbled as he gently cupped my cheek. I gulped and looked up at him, his eyes filled with worry as he returned the gaze.

"It's just...I don't...it still doesn't feel right." I choked and shook my head. His face dropped, telling me that he was equally as heartbroken by my words.

"What doesn't feel right, pet? Talk to is." He urged. I gulped, trying not to cry as I stared at him.

"I just...I'm sorry." I choked and shook my head before turning away and starting to move through the crowd.

"Y/N, wait!" I heard Will yell after me, but I didn't stop as I rushed through the crowd. I got to the end of the dance-floor and ran for the doors, my heels making it painful. But I didn't care. I ran out of the building and winced as rain immediately started falling onto my skin. I sighed as I looked up at the sky.

"Of course it would be fucking raining." I mumbled to himself.

"Y/N." I turned around, my eyes wavering as Will ran out of the building and towards me.

"Will, I'm sorry." I choked as I turned to leave again.

"No, you're not going anywhere, we need to talk about this." He scoffed, gently taking my wrist and pulling me back around to look at him.

"What's there to talk about, Will?!" I exclaimed.

"How about the fact that we fucking love each other, and yet we're still not together." He nodded. I bit my lip, shaking my head as I looked down.

"That's what we need to talk about. The fact that I admitted my feelings to you a year ago, with the hopes that you'd become me girlfriend, and still we're fuckin' somehow stuck as best friends." He spoke. I sighed and looked back at him, the rain now having completely ruined my hair and having completely flattened Will's.

"Something just feels wrong, Will. Trust me, I've been wracking my brain for a fucking year to try to figure out what it is, because I do love you and I want to be with you. But that one little thing is stopping me." I scoffed and shook my head. Will sighed and nodded, his eyes wavering as rain poured down his face.

"I know, lass, I know. I feel it too. Something that isn't quite there, but that you just can't put your finger on." He nodded, making me gulp and return it.

"Thing is, pet, I think that that's how we know to jump." He admitted as he walked towards me. I looked up at him.

"What?" I gulped. He sighed and looked down at our hands as he took mine into his before looking back at me.

"We know that we work as best friends. We love each other, but we don't know whether or not we work as boyfriend and girlfriend. That's the something missing. We're scared to take that jump, because we don't know if it'll work or not. But the only way to see, is if we do take the jump." He admitted. I gulped and bit my lip.

"And what if it doesn't work? What if we both end up with our hearts broken?" I choked and shook my head. Will sighed and nodded, raising his hand to gently cup my cheek as he looked into my eyes

"That's a risk that we have to take. But I think that when we're married with kids in ten years and looking back on this exact moment, we'll both be thankful for what we decided to do." He nodded.

"Steady on, you've not even asked is out yet." I teased, making him laugh and nod. I gulped, my smile disappearing as I looked at him timidly.

"So, what do ya say, pet? Will you take the risk with me?" he asked hopefully. I gulped and bit my lip, my heart pounding so fast that I was surprised that it hadn't burst right out of my chest. Will was right. I was absolutely terrified of losing my friendship to him, but I was in love with him. And if the risk of losing him got me the reward of living my life with him, I'd take that. I looked at him, making him gulp.

"Okay, Will Lenney. I'm ready to jump with you." I admitted. Immediately his lips broke out into a smile, making me laugh as he leant down and pressed our lips together passionately. I smiled into the kiss, holding Will's face as his hands cupped my waist. I broke the kiss but joined our foreheads, my eyes fluttering open to see Will already looking at me.

"I love you. So much." He scoffed and shook his head.

"I love you too, Will." I whispered. He smiled again, making me return it as he leant down and kissed me again.
