7. Protect Her
"Miss you need to wait. Sir is in a meeting." The lady stops Nina from barging in.
It was early in the morning but there was a huge commotion in the police station. Nina had come to talk to the investigative officer Tyler Mormon and the convict, Jason Wheeler, of her mother's case.
"I have been waiting for more than 2 hours. I know your boss doesn't want to see me and is looking for excuses. But I won't let it go! I won't let it go!" Nina shouts at the top of her voice, particularly looking towards Tyler's office.
"Send her in." Tyler says calmly from inside his office. She enters, takes a seat and presents a file in front of him.
"What is this?" Tyler says, not looking at the file.
"The work you should have done properly."
"Nina Martin, it has been 10 years now and you are still on that."
"Because what you did was wrong. The investigation you did was wrong. It was total bullshit. And here is the proof." She shoves the file towards him, "A drug addict? Seriously? Drug overdose? Come on, you could have done better. There weren't any traces of drugs in her blood, the report says it all. She was hit on the head."
"Yes, she was. We have her murderer in jail, serving his term. But we can't deny how she got there in the first place."
"You call that stupid drug dealer a murderer? Who can't even kill a fucking mosquito on his own?"
"People change Nina. His money was involved in it and he had no other way to take it back from your mother." He gives the file back to her and continues, "Do you deny that your mother was going through some financial problems after coming back from New York?"
"No, I don't deny that, but...."
"Then she getting killed over money is a plausible explanation. Do you deny that your mother was depressed and had to resort to pills without a doctor's prescription?"
"That was because of Jerome Williamson godammit!" she bangs her fist on the table.
"Behave yourself, Miss Nina. This is a police station and not your house. And please stop dragging names of innocent people into this. I can charge you for defamation."
"OH REALLY? You will charge his daughter for defamation?"
"You are not his daughter. We have DNA reports proving that."
"They are fake. You know they are fake! I am his daughter. Juliana and Jerome's."
"Please stop being delusional Miss Nina. You and Mara are both from different fathers and none of them is Mr. Jerome Williamson."
"Oh god! Don't you get tired of repeating the same thing over and over again?"
"You are not here to argue what makes me tired. If you are done, you can leave." He says without looking at her. Nina is furious with anger.
"You won't change your answers. I know who might. I want to meet Jason Wheeler." she says glaring.
"Okay. I won't take that right away from you. But stop banging your head on the wrong door. The truth won't change."
"The truth is right in front of you but you won't acknowledge it." Tyler says nothing and signals one of the guards to take Nina to the jail quarters.
x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x
A man in his fifties with a smug look on his face is sitting across Nina.
"Only 10 minutes." The guard says before closing the door.
"Who do we have here after so many years?" Jason smirks. This wasn't the first time Nina was visiting him. She had tried to persuade him to tell the truth before also but he wouldn't budge. Sometimes Nina would dream of punching him right across his face and was on the verge of losing her self control.
"The truth. Tell the truth and I promise to take you out of the jail." Nina pleads.
"The truth is..." he puts a cigarette in his mouth, "Uh...do you have a lighter?" Nina shakes her head in a no. "Well, I guess you aren't like your mother." Jason smirks again. Nina balls her fist but controls herself.
"Oh so where I was...the truth? Yeah...so the truth is....the person....who killed........ your.......mother......was....Jason Wheeler."
Nina stands up to slap him but the guard behind stops her.
"You bastard! I know you are lying! You all are fucking liars!"
"No one is lying. I killed her. She ran away from New York without paying my money. And so I sneaked in your house and bang! Killed her with one blow on her head."
Another guard enters the room stating that their 10 minutes are over. Nina glares at Jason who stood up to walk back to his cell. She tripped him and says with determination, "I will uncover the truth. Just wait and watch!" and storms out of there.
Back at the villa, they have a not so unexpected guest, Alphie.
"Please, I really can't handle you two constantly bickering around like kids." Alphie says to Fabian.
"We are not. We are past that now." He assures him.
"I won't believe it until I see it with my own eyes. This has a lot of people on the line."
Fabian looks at him with a confused expression about what he meant from it. As he was about to ask, they both saw Nina coming. Her cheeks and eyes were red indicating that she might have cried.
"Nina? Are you okay?" Alphie goes to hug her. She hugs him back and sniffs a little.
"I am okay Alphie. It's just Jason and Tyler...they are getting on my nerves."
"You went to the station without me? Again?" Alphie asks pulling form the hug. "How many times have I told you this? Don't go there alone. You know they..."
"They would still lie even if I have a bunch of people with me. I had to try once more. But this is the last." Nina cuts him.
"No! I will have a say in this. Next time, you will take him with you wherever you go!" Alphie points at Fabian.
"Okay...just for your sake. Though have you asked him yet?" They both turn to Fabian.
"Uh yes... why not? It is my job after all." Nina gives a small smile and Alphie notices that.
"Wow! You weren't kidding. You guys did makeup." Alphie laughs.
"No. We just decided we will give each other space." Nina says going back to her room.
Alphie looks at Fabian apologetically, "Sorry about her attitude. She has been through a lot. Anyone even remotely related to Patricia gets on her nerves. And what great timing that you had to enter her life now. Just...just let her accept this for now..."
"You don't come in that list?" Fabian teases him. Alphie blushes a little.
"Thank god I don't." he chuckles. "I.....I....am the adopted son of Patricia and Jerome. Even if I am related to them on paper, I changed it a few years back. Now I don't have a legal guardian. They had to because of the elections at that time. Later, I was fine with just being Alphie Lewis and Patricia didn't object."
Fabian nods in understanding. They talk for a little bit and he leaves.
Back in Nina's room, she is buried in papers around her; her phone ringing constantly. I have to find proof. I have to bring out the real culprit!
She looks up from her desk to see Mara standing in her balcony, leaning over a bit. She got scared and gets up to go to her immediately but Fabian comes to the rescue. It seems as if he is scolding her.
Nina takes a sigh of relief. She smiles sweetly looking at them.
Maybe it is for the best.
Maybe I should let her be.
Maybe he can protect her better than I can.
